I've got to admit that I'm a bit of a denim snob. Its easy to get swept up in the ultra premium artisanal brands using denim loomed on the top of a mountain by a 300 year old monk. Still, when it comes to just pulling on a pair of comfy denim that isn't some cheap mall brand there isn't much to choose from besides the old Levis standby. For guys looking to break into the premium denim thing with limited means Blue Rise Denim is a great start. At $79 out the door they are actually more affordable than most when tax and shipping is included. Don't let that price fool you, we're still talking about beautiful details like ultra soft pocket bags, custom rivets, YKK zippers, and a real leather patch (not that cardboard junk). I think they're a wonderful value.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

UPDATE: Blue Rise Denim has been sold off by their parent company. I don’t know if they’ll be back or not, but it’s really a shame. So you may ask why I keep this video live. The reason is that I enjoyed making it and I hope you enjoy watching it, even if the brand no longer exists.

I remember I bought two pairs of really nice jeans, paid in the hundreds and I was terribly dissapointed to the point I didn't wear any kind of jeans in over a year, they weren't practical and they didn't take their trips to the washing machine very well. Inexpensive jeans with stretch are the best in my opinion because they give you great mobility and you don't care so much about damaging them and the stetch actually makes them more durable to the average guy.

I bought some $30 jeans by Goodfellow & co at Target. It’s faded black, stretchy, and here’s the best part... The back of the fabric has been brushed into a soft fluffy surface. I never wanted to wear tighter pants. But this was only available in a skinnier, tapering fit. I usually only wear relaxed or straight. But the pants interior finish was just too seductive, and it really fit like a glove in a super comfy way. They call this material “winter denim”. I got it just in time for the first snow.

I want a heavier denim, I'm not interested in the fade and creases that would normally take me 4-5 years; occurring within the first year. It seems the denim fanatics want those creases and fade as soon as possible. I'm willing to drop up to $150. I want a dark indigo and I want at least a good year before signs of that wear shows. Like a shoe polishing instructional; how about a guide to keeping color on clothes? Second almost all the raw and selvedge I have looked into; is cut for anemic little girls. I'm 6'3" and 190. I just want a regular cut.
@CarlMurawski
@CarlMurawski 6 лет назад
You are totally correct, the trend is toward rope dyeing where very little indigo actually permeates the yarn yielding those fades everyone is so crazy about. Still, there are plenty of people like you who want their jeans to look new and crisp for a long time! You'll definitely want a jean that uses vat-dyed yarn, this allows the indigo to soak in even more and is much more permanent. I also feel your pain with the skinny/slim fit of todays jeans. The problem with this trend is that it only looks good on a small percentage of the population, and definitely not me. I almost always go with a straight cut, not only does it fit over a boot but it keeps the line of my silhouette looking correct and not like a candy apple. I'd suggest checking out some more traditionally made denim for starters like Pointers Brand or even Roundhouse. These guys are workwear through and through with very little to make them "fancy pants". Furthermore they are a more traditional cut and under $100 almost across the board. You'll just have to make sure you like the wash.

Just bought a pair of the extreme stretch harley wash in straights fit. Delivery was fast, packaging and presentation is impressive, finishing is nice, color distressing is a little more contrasty than I normally buy. I like stretch denim (I'm a diehard AG Protege fan), but the extreme stretch fabric might be too much for me, as it doesn't feel "cottony" but rather more synthetic performancewear. I'd probably prefer the feel of the next level down (comfort stretch), but since fit is fairly tight in the calf (this is common for me, I have huge calves and thighs for waist size) it ended up working out.

I don’t like anything but the jeans with some stretch. That being said there are some that are build better than others. Some men’s jeans seem more like jeggings than jeans. I don’t dabble in that territory . I personally like the American eagle stretch but they are so inconsistent in their fit. Buy 5 pair and they all fit a little different . I’m hoping to find a brand to take their place. I’m still experimenting , gonna try the Levi’s 541 stretch and go on from there till I find my stable brand. Any other suggestions. Love this behind the scenes type of video! IMO its all a balance. i think every guy should know when each style is appropriate. For me, most of the time i want to feel the tough and heavy substance that comes with 100% cotton selvedge denim and love that it builds character as you wear. But there are times where i need a comfortable stretch jean that is more refined in color and appearance and so i think there is a market for that. I just hope this brand can compete with the 7FAM/Joe's/Hudson jeans that are commonly found in the fashion retailers. I think they can compete in the online only/ transparent pricing new world that is emerging!

Just found your channel, loving your approach to videos. Just recently jumped in to raw/selvedge denim, and while I _LOVE_ my 19oz Momotaros that are made from steel and cardboard, I also have a pair of Naked and Famous 2% stretch that blow my mind with their comfort. They feel and look just like a 12.5oz denim, but when you're wearing them and reach that point where the pants would normally bind up - there's just a little more room to move past that. That said, they are mid-rise so they aren't quite as comfortable in the waist (my body shape doesn't let them ride down onto my hips, so they end up floating awkwardly somewhere between my hip bones and my actual waist...). Blue Rise is definitely less 'hardcore' than the Japanese craft jeans I lust for but... I personally have some issues with Naked and Famous as a company and appreciate there's someone else out there making a budget line of quality denim.

I was wearing Duluth or carhart pants to work and neither looked very good so I’m happy to go back to jeans. I also just got some Levi’s that said they are stretch raw denim. They definitely stretch less than the wranglers, it’s just a smidge of a stretch really, I don’t think I’d even know they were stretch if it wasn’t on the tag.

USA products are received well here generally, the problem with denim is every store has its own comprehensive collection of it!, The price range goes from £15 upwards, back in the 60s-70s USA made jeans were the only one's worth buying, I think that's why I still buy Levis ect, first pair was in 1969, now 61 and have at least 12 pairs!! Mainly Levi 511, trouble is China now produce everything.

You're right, its hard for companies to resist the cheap labor costs. I'm willing to bet some of your old 60s-70s era denim would be worth something today!

Im sure their great but you can sure tell the skinny and slim are built different than the 512. I own like 6 pairs of 512's and there's a reason i stick to them. I mention it because most people are starting to see the 512 fits more people just a bit better than the 511. The skinny looks like the BR skinny which in all honesty is not a skinny jean its more of a slim. Every brand has their own idea of what skinny is and for the men its sometimes more of a slim. The taper at the bottom is something you cant give up and cant unsee when you have it. marketing has kinda fucked the idea up and now its anyones game. At least they give you options Mott and bow dont even sell skinnys in 30 length for some goddamn reason is beyond me. So I spend my money else where. Great looking out for the new brands they deserve a chance. Just look at thursday boot.

Excellent points! I really like bringing the little brands to your attention and then let them speak for themselves. As far as the skinny/slim/athletic issue it can be super confusing and I've been tripped up by it more than I can tell you! Add to that the unique measurements some brands have like Tate and Yoko with their Weird Guy fit, I'm totally lost. In terms of comparison with Levis, I've always been a 511 guy until I tried their 514 and it became my go-to. I'd say these Blue Rise jeans I have (Wyatt wash, straight fit) are very similar in fit to the 514s.

Carl: I "blame!" you for the mild (at present) level of frustration I have with Blue Rise Denim. After watching this video I was very interested in Blue Rise because my favorite Levi's 513 Slim Straight Fit Jean, Blue Nirvana are no longer offered. So I ordered two different pairs of jeans from Blue Rise. They are both outstanding and are my new favorites. It wasn't too long after that I proceeded to order additional jeans from Blue Rise. BUT, I could not get what I wanted because they were sold out. I emailed Blue Rise asking about inventory and received no response. As of yesterday I sent them a message through Facebook, again inquiring about inventory replenishment. I don't know if this company is already on the verge of going out of business. They are sold out and there is no information on their website or on Facebook about their status. I see that you have posted to Facebook, and I could certainly make some very positive comments as well. But I don't think there is any point in giving praise to jeans no one can actually buy. Perhaps you can use your influence with Blue Rise, since you put them on the map, to convince them to give their current and future customers some idea about new inventory. Thanks!! Keep the excellent videos coming!!

I believe the greatest jeans ever are Levi's 501 shrink-to-fit jeans made between 1994-1999. I have been wearing Levi's 501s STFs for 50 years and the ones made in the mid to late 1990s are the very best. Levi's made before that can sell for a lot of money, especially the earlier redline versions, but they aren't as good. Levi's lowered the waistline in the 1990s, while earlier ones ride higher. The 1990s versions used the very best thick soft cotton. Before that it was quite good, but not as good as the 1990s. After 2000 Levi's loosened the 501s so they don't fit near as well and started using poor quality cotton that is rough on the skin and paper thin. If you judge Levi's based on the ones they make now, I can understand why you would think they are cheap and poor fitting. I don't buy raw denim jeans in my size and wear them unwashed, that is a kooky fad. I buy them larger than my size and wash them twice to shrink them to my size and make them baby soft.

I recently found Kato in Toronto and bought a pr on sale. Got the "Pen" in 11oz. 4 way stretch and oh so comfortable. Raw, been there done that, not practical nor IMHO not worth it. Check them out, made in LA the old fashion way.
@CarlMurawski
@CarlMurawski 6 лет назад
I definitely will! It's funny how there is a diehard group of raw denim enthusiasts even though the break-in process is really just a means to get the jeans to be as comfortable as stretch is out of the box! I think the one exception is that I've yet to see any stretch in a really heavy denim, and for those who prefer their jeans to be like armor they're only left with raw.
@emidyl24
@emidyl24 6 лет назад
BTW Kato does have a 14oz 4way as well. I went with the 11oz just because it was "that" comfortable and my sizing fit me TTS right out of the gate. I tried the 14oz on and was not doing it for me. Perhaps die hards might be swayed by that option. Definitely stiffer but there is that wonderful give. Maybe without my winter weight it could be an option to go heavier LOL

What would be the best deal on heavy weight denim jeans. Or even duck as a second
@CarlMurawski

Heavyweight denim is usually expensive because of the heavy duty needles and threads they use to make them. I like the Naked and Famous Elephant series, or Railcar Fine Goods, but for a good deal you can't beat the Bravestar heavyweight denim.

Price being irrelevant, NOT.......LOL. Yes I can afford $100/jeans, but for casual wear and/or light work jeans, I AM NOT spending $100 on jeans. It's just not in my DNA to pay extra for fashion. I work hard, play hard, and my family comes first, so I don't dress to impress. Every penny saved can provide for a better life for my family. My work and work ethic will speak for me. As to jeans, I actually love Dickies and Wrangler carpenters. I actually find them so similar that I've often wondered if they're made at the same factory. Both are of woven denim or in colors, they're a light canvas. Stylish, comfortable, and crazy low priced (under $40)! Yes I have Carhartt and love them, but in the summer I sweat my rear off in them. All this having been said, I rec'd some Duluth Buck Naked underwear, and am now about to buy several of their clothing line. DULUTH: BEST UNDERWEAR EVER!
