Nemo Tensor Insulated Ultralight Sleeping Pad
Agenda Free Link : www.nemoequipment.com/product...
What it is :
The Nemo Tensor is a three season, ultralight sleeping pad that comes in multiple forms, insulated, non-insulated and it also comes in multiple styles.
Versions :
Tensor Non-insulated
Tensor Insulated
Tensor Alpine - which has a slightly higher r-value.
R-Value :
Tensor Insulated - 3.5
Tensor Alpine - 4.8
With this r-value rating, the majority of users will be comfortable with temps down to around 20F and on snow. Below that rating, you may want a higher r-value or want to bring an additional pad to put underneath this one such as a foam pad. These are subjective measurements though as everyone is different; I run warm and at 25, I was absolutely comfortable but Susie was starting to feel cool air coming through from the ground.
Sizes :
There is a short pad which most people refer to as a half pad.
There is a Regular length mummy.
A regular length rectangle
Regular length wide rectangle
Long Wide Rectangle
Price : For the Regular Rectangle insulated version, the retail price is $160 and will go up and down in price depending on size and whether or not it is insulated.
Materials :
20D PU Polyester
Thermoplastic valves
Alumuniized thermal mirror film - two layers of insulation - similar to what Thermarest has done with their XTherm sleeping pad
Colors :
Yellow for the Ultralight Tensor model and orange for the Alpine version
Measurements : 72” long 20” wide for the regular rectangle model.
3” of cushion
Weight : 15oz for the regular rectangle
Included :
Storage bag
Vortex Inflation Bag
Velcro compression Band
Repair Kit

Review Pros :
Nemo is a company that is known for their quality tents and sleeping bags and the trend continues with their sleeping pads. This is a top quality product as it should be for the money.
Construction is excellent
The pad is one of the most comfortable that I have used - it’s long enough, wide enough and offers excellent cushion. With 3 of ground separation, you won’t have an issue with your bones pushing into the ground. Sleeping on this pad is awesome!
Materials are fairly quiet considering that some sleeping pads are very loud and obnoxious when you are moving.
Excellent weight concerning the warmth and size. The pad itself is 15oz!
Very good valves for inflating and releasing air.
Included Vortex Pump Sack is excellent and makes inflating the pad much easier. Speaking of which, this is a much better solution than what you will find with Thermarest or Klymit.
Price is fair considering the size of the pad and the r value. There are warmer sleeping pads on the market but they are a fair bit more expensive. For an example, the Thermarest Xthrem is around $220 but does offer an r-value of 6.9.
Review Cons :
The materials which make up this pad are more fragile than other sleeping pads but it is lighter; the purpose of the Tensor is lightweight, good insulation, good price and excellent comfort. Other pads such as the Xthrem are heavier, not as comfortable, warmer, and are more expensive.
Comparing the Xthrem’s materials, the Tensor definitely feels less strong and it would be my advice to be as careful as possible with it.
I would not recommend using this directly on the ground without a protective groundsheet underneath it. After all of my use, I believe if you take care of this product and use it as intended it will last a very long time.
Next, not a con but something that I want for you to consider; if you are going out into the coldest of conditions, you may want to consider a pad like the Thermarest XTherm. While more expensive it is warmer and the materials are more substantial.
With a pad that features such a high level of comfort, it is going to require a fair amount of air to inflate it; via mouth this can take some work if you don’t plan to bring the vortex pump sack with you.
Summary :
This is hands down the most comfortable sleeping pad that I have ever used, the price for what you are getting is fair and the low weight is impressive. Do keep in mind how the company was able to get the weight down to this level and you shouldn’t have any issues.

Luke, my esteemed friend...read up on the "vortex pump sack!" That small opening generates a vortex of air via Bernoulli's Principle that automatically rushes the surrounding air into the sack....but the MOST important technique that is listed on the directions, is to hold the sack opening SIX to EIGHT inches away from your mouth while exhaling. Check it out and watch the difference! THREE pumps and your pad is full! MOST people never read up on this thing, and it's quite well designed and works like magic.

Yes. If you back off a bit when you blow, it’ll easily fill right up. There’s a reason they call is a vortex. This pad is my favorite as well.

no no no! The opening is SUPPOSED to be small!!... its NOT to roll it up, its because it creates a venturi effect and suction to pull air into the bag. You, as most eveyone does when reviewing these, used the bag totally incorrectly. Keep your mouth back from the opening and blow a hard quick puff at the opening, the bag will fill its self up (sucking air into it) and you don't just huff your breath into it.

I swear, nobody reads the direction on the pump sack. Multiple different videos show incorrect use of the pump sack. Definitely would have thought you would have gotten this right Luke. Your supposed to blow 6" from the opening. The bag is designed that when you blow this far away, it sucks the surrounding air. This also reduced the moisture from your breath. One full breath from 6" almost fills the bag for me.
@toothytube
@toothytube 2 года назад
From what I've seen he does this fairly often. I highly suspect that he's just one of those guys that's somewhat averse to reading the directions. I know a number of people that will have to take multiple wrong passes at almost anything before they'll "break down" and glance at the instructions. And some that'll simply call it "good enough" no matter how bad they actually got it.

Sounds like you're a fair weather camper. In warm weather, yes you're right and the directions are kinda right. But in -40 the directions are wrong as you don't want ANY moisture going into the air bed. As he rightly said, if you are going to be using it in winter in sub zero temps DON'T blow into the pump sack (even in summer time), no matter how far back your water blowing mouth may be. Most moisture stays inside the pad, so wet air blown in during summer is still there in winter.

Bonus: the inflation bag can be used as a billow! It’s saved my family on a cold night, whipped up a little small nozzle out of duct tape to make the air even more concentrated and we had a warm fire in wet conditions. Great pad too, have two of them and love it. I patch them with tenacious tape and a tiny smear of aqua seal. It’s easy, and can be patched in field with tenacious tape or duct tape no problem.

Hey Luke, good video. The pump sack design is the way it is to prevent air from escaping after it enters the sack. You really want to be 1.5-2ft away from the opening when you blow into it and it inflates right up with very little breath.

I agree with you on the air sack, I love the weight of the Nemo tensor alpine compared to my sea to summit ether light extreme... Not quite as warm, but so much lighter and compact and both are comfortable.... But the Nemo would be so much better if it had the sea to summit air inflation bag. In practice the sea to summit can take a breath from a distance, I find the Nemo doesn't collect air. Both are way better than blowing up with breaths :).

I have both the lightweight and alpine versions of this product. I have used the alpine now in extreme cold and I can absolutely testify to its warmth. I was grateful for the pump sack after a long day on the trail and trying to set up quickly. I got the long wide to fill the entire bathtub of my MSR Access 1. This and the closed cell foam are perfect. I imagine I will be fine going down to -15f that seems to be a norm in the white mountains in winter. Yes...one needs to baby it. Especially the valves. I just remind myself to slow down when inflating or deflating. Awesome kit!

Thanks Luke I appreciate the review I’ve been considering getting one of these. From what I’ve seen on other channels you are meant to hold the inflation vortex bag further away from your mouth and your breath creates a vortex pulling more air into the sack and that prevents much of the moisture from your breath from entering the sack.

I have the regular wide version of this pad. I chose that because I am a side sleeper and it gives me a little more area to work with. I find the pad to be very comfortable! I’m ok dealing with the cons you pointed out to have a comfortable sleep and be well rested for the next days adventures. Nothing makes a trip better than waking up refreshed and ready to go.

Absolutely! I'm a side sleeper too, I need the cushioning & the extra width. I tried the regular wide at REI yesterday & was really impressed with it. I have a Thermarest Trail Pro which I love and although it is on the heavy side I cant use it for extended backpacking trips because its too bulky & takes up too much space in my pack. The Tensor looks like a great alternative 👍

Hi Luke I bought this pad (the wide version) about 3 months ago. I am a side and front sleeper. This pad is great for side sleeping very comfortable. If you are a front sleeper and you use a camping duvet the wide works brilliantly as the extra width stops my arms going on to the cold floor. It's quiet, comfortable and easy to inflate / deflate. I have only used it for 6 nights so far but so far I'm really happy with it. Best Regards Ivan

I’ve had two of these. Used them in tents with footprints. Got the first pad, used it for one night and it was the most comfortable night of camping I’ve ever had. The next time I used it, it had developed a leak and needed to be re-inflated every 40 minutes. I returned it, got a replacement, and took it on a week long trip of camping on an island. First night was perfect. Second night, the second pad started leaking just like the first pad. I had no way to find the leak, no way to fix it, and no replacements available for my trip. The leak got worse as the trip continued and eventually I was refilling it every 25 minutes. After a while, I stopped bothering and accepted I wouldn’t have a pad for the final two nights. Luckily. REI still took it back. I was very excited about this product. I really wanted this pad to work for me, but I only got one night of good sleep out of each pad.

I can back you up on this! I was hiking and a few days and then it got a small hole! From the bottom and i try to patch it and the Patch would not stick to it! So i was given another one and it did the same thing a hole in the bottom I give up after i seen how the hole was made, the pad has this reflective layer that is set on the inside that has circles that is placed to keep it in place, that is what makes a hole, from stretching after blown up a over a course of use! Great pad when does hold air! I went with a sea to summit and i still have the pad and use it today.

I absolutely LOVE this pad! I have the wide regular version of NEMO Tensor Insulated Sleeping Pad. LOVE the Vortex pump sack!!! I had a Thermarest self inflating pad for over 20 years and hated to upgrade. It was large and heavy so my husband and I upgraded to the NEMO ultra quiet and lightweight wide insulated bags. We slept in near freezing temps in the highest point in the Indian Heaven Wilderness and stayed warm. I slept in my NEMO Dragonfly tent with the added ground sheet. Here's a trick to blowing into the Vortex Pump Sack: blow from far enough away that the air goes into the sack without the moisture from your breath. So far, it is working for us. Happy trails with the NEMO Tensor!!!

I have the regular/wide version and love it. Before that I had a Klymit insulated pad. The difference in width was welcome because my elbows would always slide off the pad at night and I would be woken up by the cold. When things go sub 20 I simply put either a Thermarest Prolite 4 (now called the Pro I think) which has a 3.2r rating, or the Thermarest Z-Lite Sol, with a 2r under the Nemo.

The small mouth on the vortex pump sack is intentional because it relies on the user to take advantage of Bernoulli's principle by blowing into it with your mouth about a foot away from the opening. In simple terms, when your mouth is farther away there is more surrounding air that gets sucked into the pump sack. The outside air that gets sucked in replaces some of your initial breath from the sack to help with moisture. Nice review!

Awesome pad! Comparible to the sea to summit etherlite pad. Super comfortable and lightweight and packable. The reason these pump sacks bottle neck at the top like that isn't just to make it easier to roll the pump sack down. Its designed like that for blowing air into the pump sack before you roll it down. Its what they call "the bernoulli effect". You just hold the pump sack a few inches away from your mouth and blow air into it and then roll it down. It fills the pump sack with air quicker that way. Should only take 4 bags full to completely inflate. Definitely beats blowing it up just by mouth. I want to get the alpine in a regular wide. Love 25" inch wide pads myself. I always feel like im gonna roll off the regular 20" wide pads. You have had your xtherm for years now and still going strong! Good to hear! I love thermarest! Awesome review once again Luke! Great review. One nitpick- the opening on the pump sack is perfect. In fact, I'd say it is the best pump sack out there. I can fully inflate my entire pad with three breaths (1 breath per sack full). The key, and it is a little counter intuitive, is to open the neck and blow from a hand-length away. Venturi effect takes it from there.

So comfortable, I use it when visiting friends that do not have a guest bed. No problems whatsoever with the inflation sack - read the instructions. I find it rather easy to fit the pad and inflation bag into the stuff sack. Easier than most other pads I have used. A clear winner for me.

I love your videos. And your review is spot on since I own this same pad and have had all the some experience you have had. On the air bag and the size of the opening, the design is for you to hold the bag 12 to 18 inches away and to blow air into the bag then squeeze into the pad. It helps keep the air instead bag till you start rolling the air into the pad.

This pad seems to check all the right boxes for me, with the exception of durability. It's so hard to get a useful comparison between pads on durability, but the delicate face fabric and numerous online reviews complaining about leaks pushed me to opt for the Ether Lite XT insulated instead. Made the same decision . My Thermarest Uberlite popped in Iceland this summer and I had to find a new pad . The S2S etherlight is heavier but I just have the peace in mind with 40D Ripstop and the durability of it . Worst thing is a holiday with no sleeping pad for 2 weeks in the Icelandic highlands . Ok I survived but it wasn’t fun . A single leak in a sleeping pad can ruin the whole holiday trip. No more trying going ultralight for essentials . U try to save few ounces u barely notice in ur pack just to deal with fragile gear that can fck up ur whole Holiday

Thanks, great review. Thanks 😉🙂👍I have Exped downmat tt 9 on my wintertrip. The safest inflatable in my opinion. It has six separate tubes, for punk you can replace the broken tube.

Just got the pad and I believe from what I have seen it is the 2nd version which has a increase in R-Value of 4.2 which makes it more suitable for three seasons as well as some light winter. The vortex bag is best used when your face is farther away as you blow into it, causing a vortex of air going from the outside of the bag into the bag. This is done when the bag walls expand it sucks more outside air into it, reducing the moisture you are putting into the pad. The storage bag has more room than most other sleeping pad bags and had no issues putting it inside there even with the repair kit and vortex bag. The pad wasn't tighten all the way up and still had a very small pocket of air inside still managed to put it in without any issue. The price did increase as the regular insulated Tensor I got was marketed at 200 dollars (paid less due to membership to my local store so paid 170 dollars). Without any doubt, this product is amazing. The size, weight, three inches off the ground, R-value, and comfort is worth the price. Plus you do get lifetime warranty so if there is any issues you can send it in or they'll send you a new one. Luke already did a video on his experience where they told him to cut it up and throw it away. But anyways, at the very least we have the warranty so you don't have to baby it as often but it is still a good idea to do so.

I've used this pad for a year or so and i loved it! LOVED it because although i did take good care of it, it leaks like crazy. I've got about 4 or 5 patches and it's still leaking from somewhere. I've kind of given up on it!! 😞😓😩

Thank you for the review, yes the opening to the inflation bag is a little small this technology/system was developed by young man about six years ago maybe 10, he was on kick starter or indigo on how he got it started. "Windcatcher" I also had an Exped down 9 mat, did not hold up well, but the bag is great, wider mouth and with the exped bag you can use it as a pillow as well, certainly the bag is huge but when using it as a pillow it seals up well and I put it inside a fleece stuff sack and it works really nice. My Exped mat did not hold up over time. So far my Nemo has done vary well. I have there tents as well. My understanding the Nemo products are guaranteed for life haven't ever tested that thought or in practice but that's what I understand. I will be starting the Appalachian trail at the end of January this year and good to know about your breath I will make sure I inflate it similar to how you're talking about not putting moisture in the bag, I will need to increase my insulation factor on this trip that I'll be taking I will be using the Nemo Z-fold as well. I very likely need to increase my R-value tremendously for this coming trip. very smart thoughts you got there thank you for sharing and posting

Awesome review! The weight, thickness, and r value combination of this pad is impressive. A sub zero pad that's 3 inches thick and less than a pound? That's good stuff. Am I the only one that thinks the 'vortex pump sack' looks like a giant whoopie cushion? 😆🤷‍♂️

What do you think of the insulating ability of the Klymit Static V? Some say it isn't even close to the claimed 3.5 R value. Others seem happy with it, but maybe they haven't tested it in colder conditions. I don't know. If you or anyone reading this can shed some light, please do.

The one I have has a R value of 4.4 I have used it down to 25 degrees. It worked well but if the temperature got any lower the cold would have definitely started to set in. If I was going any lower I'd also use a close cell foam pad underneath. As for comfort it does fin there are better pads and more comfortable ones but for the price I like it. I'm the kind of camper that hates spending a lot of money. Just to have the gear fail over time.

I had the Thermarest and gave it away because it was too noisy. I have the Nemo Vector (discontinued), insulated, large and wide size with built-in hand/foot pump. Very quiet and comfortable. Anyway, I put it in a 5L waterproof drybag after roiling it up. Keeps it dry and protected from anything sharp either in your pack or on the ground when out of the pack.

I have M-sized mummy shape Nemo, a non-isolated version. I am a wiggly worm and a side sleeper at night so it is very comfortable and very quiet lightweight pad. So far I have used it a few times without any additional mat below but with a lot of fear regards to breaking it. I would prefer to use an additional mat under for the future camps.

You should check out how inflation bags are supposed to be used :P I ended up going with the Exped Downmat UL Winter LW as my go to for an insulated mat, quite a bit heavier but even thicker and more insulated which is worth it to me.

I think this one is comparable to therm-a-rest x lite and alpine version is comparable to x therm. I was able to snatch the Alpine version half price at 100 euros when i was in Sweden. So far satisfied with my choice 🙂 I use pump bag as dry bag for my clothes as double in order to save weight.

I have the regular tensor for summer, it doesn't have almost any R value to it. The insulated has R3.5, the Nemo Tensor Alpine has R4.8. It's still quite far from the R6.9 of the XTherm, but if you don't need that level of pad where you're going, then the Tensor will be really nice, comfortable and packs neatly. R3.5 is in the "three season" range, R4.8 is "four season" and R6.9 is in "extreme cold".

For the record, Thermarest XTherm ground side material is 70D, tops side is 30D. I think it's the one Susie will sleep on whenever you two go out on a joint adventure. For the record, XTherm is THE sleeping pad all others are measured & compared to. It is THE pad you can inflate & know when you wake up in the next morning it will still be inflated. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

I have mixed feelings on my. I absolutely loved it for the last 3 years. SUPER comfortable, I was just last week warm in it down to 25°f, lightweight enough for me. But I had an issue recently where I discovered black mold growing on the inside of the pad. I’ve always stored it unrolled , deflated and with the valve open. I’ve also inflated it every time with the pump sack. Nemo told me it wasn’t under warranty and to place the pad on sunlight to help with the mold. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️. Looking at possibly a Big Agnes pad for a replacement. Over all I’d still highly recommend it though.
