Thank you, I am so happy to hear that! It was a lightbulb moment for me when I was a makeup artist and had access to so many foundations with different pigment levels.
I have found the best results are from using a full coverage/high pigment product and just blending it into a very thin layer or mixing it with my own primer/moisturizing products to create my own level of coverage. I think that provides ultimate flexibility because you can always sheer out higher coverage, but you can’t build up a light coverage product without using an uncomfortable amount of product. Paying for the pigment is a good motto to go by because then you aren’t just spending your money on the filler/cheap ingredients in a product. I now only use the Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation as concealer and foundation and it allows me to apply such a thin layer of product on areas I want coverage, and I just adjust the finish by changing my skin prep beforehand since I don’t like mixing products on my hands. It costs wayyyyy less to buy a $50 foundation that’s 1 ounce (30 mL) than it was to purchase my favorite concealer that I was using as my all over coverage beforehand (it costs $176 per ounce in comparison).
Can you do a video about primer? I definitely get a much smoother, long lasting finish with it. However, sometimes a primer and foundation or concealer will NOT blend together? It gets all goopy or pilly. I haven't been able to figure out why.
It is to do with whether the primer is silicone or water based, and if your foundation is silicone or water based. If the primer and foundation don't match, they will pill and go all horrible as they repel each other. Look on the bottle ingredients. If the first or second ingredient is aqua, it is water based. If not, it is silicone based
You also may not be letting your primer dry enough before you start applying your foundation. Or, you could not be letting your skincare products sink in before trying to apply your primer. There are so many factors that go into using primers, a video isn't a bad idea.
This seems so simple but nobody else has explained it this way, thank you!!! Would love for you to do a video of your favorite full coverage foundations!
I'm so glad I got this recommendation on my feed. I loved everything you say , this explained so much to me! I got a few skin tints and they never look good on me , ever, now I know why. !!
Hi Valentina, so happy to see this video was helpful! It always amazes me how these small things like coverage level can make such a big difference in the overall outcome of my makeup. Have a great weekend!
First time seeing one of our videos, no one asked, but I find your delivery refreshingly natural and down to earth. The advice was actually helpful. Many beauty videos feel like over the top performances, like ads you can’t skip. Thanks for not being that basically 😂
Thanks so much for this video! I felt like I already knew this and I did on a surface level but you made the light bulb go off for me in two ways! Definitely explains my splotchy looking bronzer/blush but when you said full coverage does not equal weight... OMG! I always stay away from full coverage because I thought about those products as heavy but not all are and I need the coverage on my cheeks. Can't wait to do my makeup tomorrow! 💜
Oh yay! The light bulb moment for me was looking through some blogs photos once and trying to figure out why my blush looked so uneven, then it all clicked. I really hope this helps, let me know how it all goes tomorrow!
Oh, so kind, I'd be happy to! I honestly didn't know if the makeup looked good and debated even posting this, but I felt like the foundation info was really helpful.

Great videos, I have a problem buying the right product for my face, I've wasted so much money. Even though I moisturize my skin the products looks dry and really emphasizes the pores and lines and makes me look older and pulls my face down. I'll try your tips, and look forward to the next video. Xx
Thank you so much for making this. I'm 45 and menopause has changed my face and I just feel so ugly using my regular light coverage foundation. I'm definitely going shopping for a good full coverage lightweight foundation now!
I have surface discolouration and medium/full coverage is definitely best for me. Cle De Peau fluid natural foundation and Haus Labs are both excellent
Thank you! I'm going to watch all your videos rightniw. I can't wait to learn more. I also love your intro message. Didn't realize I wasn't breathing until you said, 'take a deep breath'!!
This was SUPER helpful, my skin is similar to yours and most TMs don't look great but I can't seem to find sull coverage that doesn't look like stage makeup. Maybe I will try a fuller coverage again and see if I cant get better at application? Love your work, its beautiful but functional, down to earth and verrrry helpful!
Maybe a medium coverage would suit best then? I really like the Nars Longwear, it's one of the few full coverage that really looks like skin to me. I just make sure my skin is very well moisturized before using it! I'll try to put together a video on full coverage foundations I like if that would help? and maybe one on application tips. Let me know!
@@girlgetglamorous YES! My skin is dry and flaky (i'm in my late 40s) but I also have acne scars and wrinkles (yay!) and while primers have helped, they also irritate and seem to cause breakouts (no matter how hard I work to remove it). A fast application before work results in dry patches and often I just remove it quickly and then apply Clinique BB cream and go. It doesn't look great but it looks better than all foundations. Maybe make a "How to do Foundation on Skin that refuses to wear Foundation" video? Thanks for your reply and your work, my coloring is similar to yours and I find it's a little harder to get makeup to look good when youre fair? We can't take the color and amount of product that brunettes can.
OMG!!! Just discovered your channel and hit the subscribe button!!! First, you are GORGEOUS Second, excellent video through info. Loved it❤️❤️ Third, at 52 I am always searching for that one channel that will really give me the real info. And on real unfiltered skin and I think I just found it🥰 Thank you sooo sooooo much and can’t wait to continue watching your content😘
This was so nice to read, thank you!!! I love showing the skin without any filters. It was a little hard at first, I think everyone wants to present their “best self,” but I think it’s so valuable to show exactly how products look as close to in-person as possible. Also, thank you for your kind compliment, so nice of you to say 🧡🧡
@@girlgetglamorous That’s exactly it-That is the best version of yourself ❤️❤️❤️ the makeup just enhances your natural beauty💕you are beautiful , I am 52 and I was blessed as my grandmother of 98 tells me , with oily skin so I don’t own to many wrinkles (if at all..)yet😉 that being said-I agree ,showing my bare skin is getting harder and harder and I truly feel that as time goes by there isn’t a day I don’t wear a light foundation or tinted moisturiser even when I sit home🌸Bless you and please continue to enrich us mature gals with your rich knowledge🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
I just learned so much, thank you! This totally explains why my makeup never looks as good as I’d like it to. I’m 36 and always have been scared to use anything med/full coverage incase it looked cakey but clearly this is my sign that I need to step it up
Outstanding at 53 I'm essentially just learning about make up technique because I hardly ever write wore any my entire life. So thank you for such a concise vid. Also noticed that many videos use all sorts of brushes to apply foundation but when I wear make up I always use my fingers to apply it like you. Looking forward to more vids!!
Thank you, Belinda! I think our generation didn’t have as much access to information and training like youtube, blogs, etc. I used to scour through beauty magazines and re-read their “tutorials.” Once I became a makeup artist, I realized how many little steps were left out of those articles and I’ve been on a mission to teach what I’ve learned. 🙏🏻 Glad they are useful to you and happy to have you here 😊
Excellent info I never considered. Now I am wondering- what makes the weighty feel in foundation ? Ingredients to avoid? Also if I mix/layer my foundation with a primer or lotion that doesn’t blend- like oil and water, is that bc of silicone? So many questions. Thank you for being here!
Thank you so much for this amazing tip! Wow I have never heard of this before! I will save so much money! Yay! Love your auburn hair btw, my daughter has the exact same colour 😊
I'll be honest, I feel makeup on my skin even if I have the lightest of the light on! I don't wear makeup that much so I think I feel more conscious of it ❤️
Hi! Love your content, just discovered you! Can you recommend medium and full coverage moisturizing foundations for 40+ skin? I'm not a beauty pro but always felt for me personally, one good full coverage product was better than three light ones, that always felt heavier and suffocating to my skin. Would love your professional insight!
Do you happen to know of any tricks to make a round face not look so round? I've been stuck with a round cherub looking face since I was a little kid. It's been a struggle.
Have you tried using a colour corrector under your concealer? Colour correctors work by neutralising undesirable tones on the skin using colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel: the corrector cancels-out a lot of the unwanted colour, so your concealer can do a better job of covering it. The colour needed to correct a brown spot depends on its undertone: if it's yellowish you need a lavender corrector; if it's orangey you'd use blue. I hope this is helpful :-)
Hi Amy! Sorry, I have gotten so behind on answering the questions here and am catching up now. Anne’s suggestion is fabulous, exactly what I’d suggest. The one thing I’ll add, is that I highly recommend working with cream products over any areas of discoloration. Creams have more pigment added than liquids, so a cream color corrector should cover better and allow you to use less product!
Thank you, you are so kind to notice! I have really tried to keep the upload day consistent for years, but life happens too fast, ha! We are moving cross country in February and am hopeful to have a (somewhat) more regular schedule then.
Ya I have a lot of surface colour. Freckles, broken capillaries, patches of eczema. I either wear medium-full coverage or nothing. I’ve tried ‘light coverage’ and I end up just putting on too much concealer.
@@girlgetglamorous ya I stick with med-full coverage for that reason. It’s not cheaper and multiple layers of light coverage just doesn’t look good. I have texture too.
I came across your page looking for makeup ideas for textured skin as I have an event coming up on the 11th for my husband which requires black tie formal (only military style). And I couldn’t figure out why my makeup always kept looking cakey and or like it was separating just after applying. My shade seems to be either too pale/bright or too yellow/orange. Never knew there was a peach undertone, which ai am beginning to feel is more where I may be in a neutral tone/shade.
Ever since having Covid and long Covid and then Covid again, I noticed my skin on my face and whole body seemed to age very rapidly. The liver spots and sun damage (despite always wearing spf when I go outside) were especially disheartening. I got the shiseido synchro foundation which has higher coverage and it has helped me to feel less insecure.
Hi Ashley, I am so sorry to hear this (and I am in the same boat, long covid was not fun, to put it lightly). The Shiseido Synchro Skin is such a fabulous foundation, one of my favorites. I prefer the luminous version on myself, which one are you using? Both are so nice!
We have such similar skin and hair tones! My profile photo is a decade old, my current hair color is your formula now so it's the same ;-) I'd love to know what you used for your eyes in this tutorial.
I also have the same skin and hair tone as you can tell by my profile picture and I'm delighted to have found someone with whom I can relate to. Watching 20 year old influencers with perfect skin applying makeup is of zero relevance to me. Lol

I found that once I started shaving my face I got longer lasting, smoother makeup. It also helped clear up my skin. It's also easier to make sure you've cleansed your face properly BECAUSE... nothing can get left behind or left clinging to your facial hair. I normally double cleanse when washing away makeup but either way shaving your face can also help clean away dead skin cells. Guys do it and have great skin. Women should do it too 😊
So a full coverage foundation does not equate to heavier, just more pigment or more opaque? If that is the case, where have you been all my life, lol?! Or at least the last five years! Because given what you've said, I now want full coverage, not the medium I've been wearing my entire adult life. That must also be why I've been unhappy with serum foundations, nut enough pigment. I switched to those under the impression they would be better for mature skin, but I found the exact opposite, they show every pore and wrinkle, yet cover nothing I want covered. You have changed my makeup game, thank you!
So what do you do if you’re an oily skinned gal? I feel like the more fuller coverage foundations break up and look way worse on my oily skin than a lighter coverage (which sucks bc most matte foundations are full coverage) but I just feel like full coverage looks awful. After a while. And I also don’t cake it on either. I just find the wear is not as drastic once it breaks up if it’s lighter coverage. I wish someone could make something matte and light coverage that could cover all our oily sins. Lol
@@girlgetglamorous Yes! Usually i have moisturizer and my spf under and then a primer (mattifying) then foundation, powder, spray. I do find that weirdly its the powder that contributes a lot to the cakey appearance. I haven't ever just tried only setting spray. I did see your video on that hack for concealer though, and I might have to give it a try. Also, any tips on how to apply it with a makeup sponge that doesn't make it look cakey? I find brushes work best to apply lightly, over a sponge, but maybe I'm doing it wrong.
Hi Teresa! Not silly at all, great question actually! And you can ask me anything here. Most will have the coverage level in the description. For example on sephora and ulta’s website, it will be marked on the product page. For drugstore, I recommend checking out target or ulta websites to see if the coverage is listed before shopping. Most will share if it’s light, medium, or full coverage. The majority of foundations are also “buildable” meaning if you have a medium coverage foundation you love, you can usually apply a second layer as needed without it pulling up the first layer and making it patchy. So I definitely recommend checking out those description pages! I hope this helps 🧡
Absolutely! Use whatever foundation texture suits you best. I love the Armani Luminous Silk and Koh Gen Do medium coverage foundations, I just tend to use a little more of them when my surface tones are coming through. The key is just to get a really smooth base and if you don’t mind using a bit more of the medium coverage product, I say go for it!
For me I want coverage but don't want it to sit in fine lines and wrinkles :( always the conundrum :(( so a full converge tinted moisturiser please? :)
Am I the only person who only buys medium to full coverage product but thin it down with moisturiser when I don’t need that much coverage? 😬 works pretty well.
I am 59 . Will full coverage create creases. I find that it shows my lines more. Any tips. It always settles in my lines. I tried different ones. Thanks
This got me wondering if my foundations are misbehaving because they are getting old? Some of them seem to be not so smooth anymore. I end up taking them off and starting over … which means I have to reapply skin care and everything. It’s costing me time and money to continue this way. 🙁
Hi Jamie, the tip is to cycle your foundation coverage levels, based on the amount of surface tones, instead of trying to use a lighter coverage product year round. For wear tests and close ups, I have a lot of concealer and foundation videos on my channel that might be what you are looking for! This video is focused on the specific tip of light vs medium or full coverage. I hope this is helpful!
Hi! It varies based on my surface tones that day, but for this video, it was one pea size drop (one pump of the Nars foundation) for one side of my face. Generally, I will start with one pump for my whole face and see how much that covers that day, then add another as needed and build up that way to get the right coverage level. I hope this makes sense!
I am confused. I like a tinted moisturizer for my face instead of a foundation. Are you saying that my makeup will never look blended because of this? Please help? Thank you.
No, no! Just saying IF your other makeup is looking blotchy, it might be time to use a fuller coverage foundation or BB/CC cream. I cycle throughout the year: lighter coverage products when I have a faux tan (the tan corrects a lot of surface discolorations) and I switch to medium-to-full coverage when my skin is lighter and those surface discolorations are more visible. Does that make sense?
I genuinely love the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer that I am wearing in the video and have been purchasing it for 20+ years, I just tend to switch to a heavier coverage product when my skin surface tones need extra coverage, instead of using layers of the TM to try and cover them.
I have tried everything to get a smooth even coverage but nothing has worked! I have rosacea and very uneven skin tone....I have tried water based, silicone based primers and foundations...I'm on a good skin care regimen but for the life of me i cannot get coverage without caking and splotches...I moisture and exfoliate....the more i mess with my red cheeks the worse they look when applying foundation...I'm not going to ever get flawless or perfection but would at least like it to be smooth....
Have you tried the Koh Gen Do foundations? They are used without a primer and really kind of miracle workers on all skin types. In the past when I have been on medications that changed my skin, they were the only ones that worked for me. They are a bit pricey, but not having to use a separate primer saves $ and they do go on sale.
Hi Carol! I have a video that goes into detail on this, here is the link :) | girlgetglamorous.com/how-to-know-your-foundation-undertone-cool-warm-neutral-peach
