I was living in New York while I earned a Ph.D. in psychology. I took various jobs working my was through grad school. I had a couple phone sales jobs and found out on the job I was working for mobsters because Mafia families owned legit businesses. I also worked as an insurance claims rep. One time I was sent out to settle a claim at a trucking company involving some burned-out trucks. I had sight drafts which were checks to close claims hopefully before they got a lawyer. At the trucking company I sense mobsters owned the company. One macho Italian guy took me aside and handed me a bunch of cash while asking for a nice settlement. I gave him the cash back, wrote him a check for thousands, and left. I think I should have taken the bribe. New York is such a jungle of corruption.
I really enjoyed it. This guy is something else. I was born in New York City, in the 60s. My uncles partners, and friends owned restaurant bars. I remember 2 cops. Irish ,and an Italian. The bar owner would ask me to carry them to the police car. I was a 14 yrs old, skinny kid, carry this guy's drunk. They used to put their police hats, on me, so I could carry them to their car. Their hats would danced on my head. This were big guys.
I really wish people interviewing him would ask about things that happened that hasn't already been discussed in the Seven Five or any of the 83 interviews he's done since then. I'm sure he has many more stories so please ask him!!
Maybe. But it’s true. Dowd was a clownish junkie that gave away his honor for small amounts of money and drugs. Eppolito and Caracapa were stone cold killers and had no souls. But the dude Hydell that they kidnapped for Anthony Casso was a rapist so no big loss there.
i was police in Newark NJ at age 19 in 1976 . I worked there a little over 3 years and was ripping dealers the last year and a half , could disappear when you felt like it most times , badge Americard kept me out of trouble in New Jersey and New York city , my whole family was police , it was impossable to get in trouble . Dealing qualudes getting 1000 and selling in batches of twenty , a few pounds of weed and off quarter, half and full pounds , quarter oz of coke and selling 1/2, 1/4 and occasional ounce thinking this shit would never end . At 22 i knew i would not survive a career as a cop I would be dead or in jail . Even as a 19 year old knucklehead i knew itching to play with my gun i knew using it eveñ when necessary could jam me up. I was sworn in as a firefighter at 22 in 1980 same year Muke started the NYPD. Switching to Fire Dept kept me from ending up in similar situatiins as Mike . To be honest it was even tough doing the next 22 years and escaping with a pension was a miracle . 5 rehabs and multiple detoxes and i somehow left as a captain. By the wat watching the job change and New guys guys coming on after 911 thinking they are hero's. These guys thought nothing of squealing on guys to ass kiss or even get a station change. There was a line outside the Cheifs door to squeal. What saved me was knowing mt job , not being a prick boss and knowing where the skeletons were buried , and of course keeping my mouth shut😊 36:49
What a crazy story you had. Thank God you got out the Game. Dowd was so deep in it his conscious was killing him - he cried out for help. We know things in Los Angeles County have changed for officers and deputies - they can now get alcohol counseling without fear of losing their job. Which makes so much sense. Lots of politics in departments still remain the same State to State. We have been told some crazy stories not involving corruption but the ass kissing and affirmative action stuff that are mind blowing.
@@cinemillstv yes , its not the same job , all the new guys are not squealing , but enough that it sucks for the decent kids coming on , its a shame all i can say is thanks for the ride and way ahead of the game been retired from F.D. 20 years in Dec living in S.E. Asia
Lay low save a little Cheddar - Thailand here we come. Save us seat. Your story is a movie - the guy who made it out with the tax free pension and having the time of your life and stretching your US dollar.
@@cinemillstv way ahead of the game !!!! Im in Philippines now , been here a while , spent time in Thailand almost wish i was never there , i cant forget it . Thailand is just as cheap as P.I. maybe cheaper and has nicer beaches , better and less expensive hotel much better food . Lots of fun but me being me i might end up hurting myself 😂 also that Buddhist stuff is a beautiful idea but a little too set it my own beliefs to grasp it . They are always saying to me " you think too much " no shit
Mike I got on the job in 1994 at that time it was The NYC Transit Police . I never judged you . I just thought you had some really big ones . A few of us actually bought your 75 Tee in support .
In the middle of the 70s, and 80s, If you didn't had a ball, but you wanted to play, and you knew how to steal bases, you were invited anywhere you went. Money, women, deals, fashion etc. Everybody was hustling some how. From the cops, to the teachers, lawyers, doctors, pilots, social workers, Everybody. Even if you wasn't in the game, someone you knew ,brought you a gift.
I remember u dowd.....I drove a car service from howard beach area....I used to run all the local crackheads to your pricinct....all my inlaws lived over by Grant A train close to cityline...near Pitkin ave.....u should remember Crack head Donald the other guy that used to buy Crack and drive for buffys car service
aside from the harm he may have caused his victims and the NYPD - this guy really is one crazy mofo and you've gotta love and respect him to some degree😆There is no one like new yorkers - and 70's and 80's New York by the sounds. Loco loco. Huge amount of docs and films etc on the time and place though..and room for plenty more id say
Porto Rican friend shows me how to mix power cocaine and baking soda and add heat, then cold water and it is real freebase. What a rush, it was incredible. I would die of a heart attack today at 59, but back then it was a different era. First time I saw crack was in Far Rockaway Queens N.York.
Hey Mike just remember that all the Saints were sinners, please remember to advocate recovery recovery recovery nothing to be ashamed about! It will definitely help others suffering from this disease. I lived in a cop family for more than 40 years I can understand every word that comes out of your mouth please realize that you will be suffering from PTSD for quite some time and you have the NYPD to thank for that! Would love to shoot the bull😊 you sometime I am a second generation AA and have 37 years of ssobriety the program really works!!!
The 75 & 73 were crazy in those days. There were plenty cops involved and they all felt invincible. You would hear "wo 12 wo 13" on the radio then hear "puppy dog roll over" two minutes later (shout out to those who know the meaning of those two terms)
"WO" (watch out) 12/13 division number (75 or 73) meaning someone spotted inspections/IAB or "unknown suits" on the prowl. Puppy dog roll over is one of those things that if you don't know you don't need to 😉
I remember the 80s very very well grandmaster flash and the furious 5 the message great new york song but yea the 80s what a fn wild wild decade coming out of the 70s magicaly wild the 70s man thanks mike love you mike i fn get it and i fn get you and i fn love you mike i hope you get this comment message seriously take care
Dowd might have been Scarface, but he desperately needed the Frank Lopez "guys who want it all, they don't last"-speech. Had he just kept the shit low-key he could have sufficed with 2 homes and a Corvette and been happy.
Gonken greed is bad some guys want it all. Mike could of sailed off into the sunset with his pension and Family in tact but he admitted he started to believe he was a Street God.....He was a Haza - a pig that didn't fly straight.......
@@kevinfahey1968 MICHAEL DOWD IS THE FUCKIN MAN !! MY ONLY REGRET IN LIFE IS NOT TAKING THAT TEST FOR ID BE 10 YEARS RETIRED FULL PENSION AND WITH MORE MONEY THAN ILL EVER NEED !! COPS ARE JUST PEOPLE WHO WORK FOR THE STATE. YET BELIEVE THEY ARE BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE. HE WHO HAS NO SIN MAY CAST A STONE!! ALL COPS ARE CRIMINALS ALL SINNERS SAINTS. MICHAEL DOWD!!! #1 NYPD!!
First of all it's not seventy five. Its 7 5 daaaaaaaaaaaaa hey mike rem $275 300 a week break it down. @@marc108 You don't think that you're the one denying that it might not be the case, which you in turn project on me? I mean you probably think you're massively open minded while showing obvious trouble with thinking outside the box 🤷.
@@Gonken88 interesting response and I will give that a consideration. For me and the many people who have been at times been the obvious subject of such behavior I am probably a bit more jaded than the average person.. but I digress.
