The Most Creative Anime: A Limitless Wonderland 

Just to think how underrated and unknown this series is makes my head ache.

Are you kidding me, I finished marathoning this show like an hour ago and then searched to see if this channel had made a video on it and was disappointed when nothing came up. This is amazing timing.

Flip flapper just had this "Indie" feeling to it. I loved it thoroughly. It's just a shame that it flopped hard at dvd sales.

EXCUSE ME DID SOMEBODY ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT FLIP FLAPPERS?!?!?!? Finally!!!! Other people DID actually watch this show! I'm still amazed that this isn't beloved by every anime fan ever. It's an absolutely incredible show.

A friend once said "this show is more trigger hat a trigger show that has ever been trigger" And I agreed, as a trigger fan when I watched this I thought it was a show from studio trigger. Its absolutely phenomenal and I think many years down the road thisll be a cult classic.

This is the only anime with a horror segment that actually scared me

At 6:17, the way Cocona’s mom is positioned/framed is a reference to a real illusion called “The Young/Old lady illusion”. I just thought that was such a neat reference that related to the show’s theme.

Flip Flappers is amazing, it somehow scratches that itch that the original FLCL left behind.

This is one of those animes that's far too good to be underrated

As for how this got made if I remember correctly the story behind it is about as mundane as it gets. The director was a friend of someone that someone told him rather as a joke or not "if I open a studio I'll let you direct a show" and so 3hz was founded and said promise was fulfilled as a method to be a stop gap for princess principal so they had something out the year prior. Because it was more or less a throwaway thing to make sure the staff actually had something to do no one really cared about what it was or anything of the sort. They were all preparing for what was supposed to be their big push. The show was made on a fairly tight budget. It might not seem like it but it was written by 3 different people and the director himself had to story board, key animate, write and, voice act background characters among being the director. All the while being almost comically hands off and allowing his staff to put their own marks on the show. The miracle here wasn't how it got green lit the miracle lies in the director himself. For a man that mostly assumed he was going to fail now has his own studio and heading the ship once more for their first release. Flip Flappers was basically the Fallout New Vegas of anime.

It's as underrated today as is was the day the last episode aired. It's incredible animation quality, refreshing art style, amazing sound design and VA performances, and top tier writing make this series one of the best in modern anime. The action is like you're on a technicolor EDM powered rocket ride.. but the drama in the series still has the strong-yet-quiet-and-heavy emotional moments that anime is known for over western animation. 10/10 - have owned the bluray since the week it was released, it's that good.

i remember watching flip flappers when it first aired and absolutely loved it. it was so fun and just brimming with imagination, leaving itself burnt into my mind even though i never got around to watching it again since. i guess now is a good enough time to go for it lol.

I'm blown away by this show and will definitely be recommending it to my friends for many years down the line. Flip Flappers always had that feeling of expression and the struggle to find what you really want to do in life, and I have a soft spot for series that can show different stories and points of view in single episodes. I love series like this

I'm impressed that Flip Flappers is actually getting some credit. Always had a feeling, that it's going to be one of those "weird anime title that only I seemed to enjoy". Why is that so? Well - I showed this one to a friend and he was not really impressed. It was kind of a "just another anime" thing for him. Other friends seem to avoid this show - so I'm kind of left alone with my awe for this creation. This is really horrible, because I really love Flip Flappers because I was intrigued by it more than with many other shows I've seen. I just knew the moment I laid eyes upon it, that it was going to be special for me. The way the show itself handles the change from world to world and adventure to adventure is just "so anime" to me, that it reenables my enjoyment of the anime genre as a whole. It just let's me remember, what made me a fan of japanese animation culture in the first place. Moreover - the friggn music in this series is really something that needs to be talked about too. The themes are vast and change drastically depending on the world that is currently themed. That's just the kind of series OST that can't be skipped and enhances the experience of watching the whole thing. I really do love Flip Flappers which is why I'm so bugged out about it, that no one seems to enjoy it as much as I do. It's individuality that decides such things for everyone themselves - but damn - people have to recognize this wonderful work of art xD. Thank you very much - you've put me at ease with the hope that there are indeed fans like myself who enjoy those kind of "messy, wild and colorful" animated works - something that has meaning for me, even though others think that the series just had no purpose and a rushed, bad and open end. It is one of my favorite series in my personal top 10 - and I'm glad that it brings enjoyment to others as well. tl;dr Watch Flip Flappers It's weird, unique and totally awesome. At least, that's what I think.

When UTS says something is good, then it's truly a good one. Look at me, he said Houseki no Kuni is the perfect adaptation. I watched the anime AND read the manga. Now... I'm depressed as hell because of it :D

One of my favorite anime! Only problem was the pacing and direction of the end. Really wish it would have been a twenty-four episode run or at least a bit longer so the end wasn't squished and more worlds/ideas/pure-illusion-applications could have been introduced. If there had not been pacing issues, this would have easily been my favorite show in all of existence!

One of very few anime you can watch 100 times and still see new nuances and detail. Truly a Magnum Opus calibre work.

one of my fave youtubers talking about one of my favourite anime? i was really blessed recently, huh. and i almost missed it. flip flapper was such a good vibe. it takes all of the good things from all of the topics it wishes to address and handles it so well. and i think the fact that everything was ever-so slightly imperfect in some way, even in the world of pure illusion, made it better for me.

Flip Flappers is one of my favorite anime of all time. I will never forget the adventure that Cocona and Popika went on because of how beautiful it was, the characters, the settings, the story. It all works so well. I'm absolutely in love with this anime.

By reading the comment section I realized I must be one of the few subscribers who didn’t know the anime Flip Flopper. But seeing you talk in this Video Essay about it and all the comment which are so heartfelt and show so much appreciation for this series totally sparked my interest 😃 It looks amazing - and I love original anime shows they can adventure such super cool stuff. I mean don’t get me wrong I also appreciate good manga adaptations or light novel stories. But I kind of guess sometimes I feel when animators have the freedom to make a series from scratch they can really push the medium without worrying about the original work (which often has a layout). So yeah I am totally excited for this series and thankful for this video 😄

No matter what, I can't watch shows where the characters' eyes are that big, it just fills me with untold unease.

I saw the thumbnail, realized what it was, and then the ED started playing in my head.

watching this series, I felt like stories like this are why animation exists, and why it's so critical, and why it's capable of so much more than live action. You simply couldn't make anything like Flip Flappers in live action, because the camera demands something in the way of realism. Animation has a subjectivity to it that separates it. the only thing other than this to give me such a pure awe for the power of animation is Kyousougiga. I like more straightforward anime, but this abstract, dense storytelling that places trust in the audience really gets me, I feel like. That's my whole vibe, that's what I fuck with.

I love this show to bits. It was so unique. I have 1 of the 3 total limited BD's sold in the U.S. It was a real bummer this show flopped and the director ended up having to leave the studio due to the poor sales.

No mention of Hakuyu Go , the director of Mob Psycho II episode 5 and Fate Apocrypha episode 22 FeelsBadMan. He was the main key animator in this show.
