The modern tank is very powerful combined with banner bearers in front of them to act as artillery. After the banner bearer's die the enemy is close enough to actually charge them with the tank. Although my preference is using a slower modded tank with armed soldiers.

Actually, atleast in the middle ages, for cavalry to be charging into spears and sheilds is one of the best thibgs it could do. Since most of the soldiers were quite inexperienced and get easily scared when a knight on a horse comes charging at them. They easily break formation and most of them just run off. So the remaining ones just get kinda slaughtered ig. So in conclusion, cavalry should, and did, run into spears and shields. Please do correct me if I'm wrong about something, I just gave a rough explanation.
