THE MOST DECEIVING DUMP TRAILER I’VE EVER SEEN. DISAPPOINTED

We've had a Diamond C dump trailer for about a year and haven't used it much. But when we have used it, it's been great. It even fits our John Deere 333G Skidsteer (though just barely!) so it's a good transport trailer for that. Today though, we found its limits. In fact we far exceeded them. Maybe you already know this, but maybe you don't. Watch the video to find out the two limits a trailer like this has.
Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. A trick i have used for overloading dump trailers is to keep it stacked to the rear, and then also never lower it all the way back down. I put a 6" or 12" block of wood under the front. The linkage gains mechanical advantage as its raised. And it has the least amount of advantage when its fully lowered. So keeping it up just a little bit is usually all it takes to get a overload dumped.
@Fellgla

I agree. My 16' Big Tex have same type of lift. I load it like a 14' starting from the rear. Keeping the front light. A block under the front do helps.

Two things. I wish trailers had weight indicators built in. Not at all hard to do using spring compression gauge. 2nd, I put a sheet of UHDP on my trailer floor to make it slick. I made mine removable if I don't want a slick floor for a particular load. It works great for me. Cheers!

I did the same thing a couple of years ago. What I did was bring the skidloader to the front of the trailer and put the corner of the bucket under the corner of the trailer and do a little assist lift. Once the dirt started moving to the back the trailer took over by itself so I didn't have to lift too much. Worked great.

important vid. I'm a retired engineer, surrounded by hardworking farmers & cattlemen. I see them overload equipment, ...and break it, ...all the time. And then I did it, even tho I know better. It is sooo costly! I made a card of my common loads, the densities, the carry volume, and posted it. DO NOT BLOW: axle bearings, u-joints, trannies, engines. I spun an axle bearing on the hwy; very un-fun. important vid.

I actually went from a 7x14 14k trailer downsized to 5x10 10k trailer since then I wouldn't be tempted to over load it and rut up yards when driving to deliver my mulch or black dirt. 5x10 has plenty of payload and sandy screened black dirt is very heavy. My Loadtrail trailers never stuggled to lift whatever I put in them though including 3yds of pit run in the bigger unit. That was probably too much weight for my lil 1500 dodge to pull overall but hemi handled it fine.

A telescopic end dump will have more lifting capacity. When I was operating commercial end dumps and I’d haul spoilage I always stuck to a 6 scoop max. No matter what it looked like in the trailer. Even then, I’d roll across the scale 150,000 depending on the moisture content. But concentrate the load to the rear. In your trailer, I’d split the bucket at the front trailer axle (half bucket in front) then load to the rear. That’s with a end dump. With the scissor lift or a dual ram under lift, no soil ahead of the axles.

Best way i was taught to use dump trailers is to dump even down the length of the trailer in the middle. When it starts to hit the side wall of the trailer stop loading. And toss on 1 or 2 more bucks on the tail and thats. Good starting point. If it lifts easy the next go round fill it up a little more. Not an exact Science but has done me pretty good.

I guess I'm not understanding what you would use that size dump trailer for if you can't dump it with stone/dirt at the trailer's GVW. It is a triple axle dump trailer that can't dump a 1/2 or 2/3 load of dirt? Is there a lighter material you would fill it with so you can dump it? Thank you for sharing your lesson's learned! I learned something lol

I drove a dump truck and trailer for 14 years. One loader operator would sometimes overload me and when I went back to dump a little off, he would joke. "What good are those big boxes on that truck, if I can't fill them up." The nice thing about a PTO driven hydraulic pump is it will lift and dump anything you put in it, but shoveling out sticky material was just part of the dump truck game.

The biggest clue to your issue is when you unloaded a large portion of it and the remains still stuck in your trailer. Dry soil doesn’t do that. Topsoil is easily very damp and increase the weight exponentially. Also you had the volume in that trailer that I’d expect to see in a tandem dump truck. That trailer is way too large for gravel work. I’m thinking it’s more geared towards grain or grass clippings. Also look at where the lift cylinder is on that. It’s so far rearward that it can’t get any leverage on the box. One more thing to look at, what do you have for an electrical set up on that truck? Do you have a second battery and heavy service alternator? And 3500 series trucks I’ve seen with dump bodies are set up that way, and have a huge draw on power when dumping. You may need a second battery and even rev up the truck when dumping to get a little bit more juice out of it

My dump is about half as long. One Spring I loaded it to the rails with a mix of topsoil and subsoil to fill a large divot in the lawn. Backed up to the divot, pushed the button, got the right noises, but the trailer didn't lift. I ended up shoveling it out by hand on a very hot day. Only later did it dawn on me that the trailer battery was low from sitting all winter without being used. All I had to do was jump it, swap it, or charge it. All that work for nothing. I learned my lesson. Now I always start with a full battery.

It is a common mistake so don’t worry about it. Another way to resolve it is use the skid to lift on the front corner. The hardest part of lifting for the dump trailer is the first 4-6 inches. I have used equipment to help it past that point lots of times.I done this 10’s of times with no issues or damage to the trailer. Also if you are hauling dirt across the property and plan to exceed the weight limit, always load the trailer to the back keeping the 15% tongue weight in mind. Weight over or behind the pivot is easier to lift .

Just moved 35 loads of horse manure in a 14foot dump trailer I rented. Several of those loads taxed the hydraulic system due to the material composition, moisture content and sheer weight. On on occasion I though the hydraulic pump wasn’t going to lift the load. Good news is it did, and we got the job done. As a side note learned all material with high moisture content stick to the trailer bed, even at full mast. The only way to get it all out is to rock forward and backward hitting the trailer brake to cause a slide.

Most larger skid steer buckets are 1 yard buckets. Essentially you loaded 13 yards especially when you loaded those heaping yards. With the material you were loading do not go over 5-7 yards. Regardless what anyone says. You can blow the hydraulics. Dump trailers are not dump trucks. You can overload a dump truck by however much you want dang near and she's going to dump. These dump trailer manufacturers these days make it seem like you can fill the whole bed up with material and that's by far false. Yes with mulch and very light weight materials. I've put almost 20 yards of mulch on mine and she dumps like a charm. And junk / brush those items you can pack her full with. Great video brother

You can measure your loader bucket and get the approximate cubic foot capacity of each scoop. On heavy stuff, you can use a wet sand weight estimate, about 130 pounds per cubic foot, to figure the load in the trailer. Keep the pile over the axles instead of forward to ease the dump function. The trailer is a great worksaver over carrying each bucket to your dump area, as long as it is capable of holding more than 2 or 3 buckets full.

I tried this same setup when I started my contracting business. I learned; 1) Dump trailers are designed to dump trash the angle of repose is too low to dump most soils except maybe dry sand. 2) Scissor hoist are not suited for heavy loads and will stall with soils or rock. 3) There isn't a tire made that won't blow out in this kind of service. Bought the heaviest load rage f tires that would fit on the rim and had roa service called to replace them in route to a job more than once. 4) Lastly no matter what pickup truck you have, I don't care if it's a turbo charged diesel and make 500hp and 1000 lb-ft of torque it will kill the truck in a short time frame. This kind of weight requires a class 8 truck with a CDL. The DOT officer will write you a ticket based on the weight capacity of the trailer plus the truck. Learn from my mistakes.

The biggest problem that I caused myself was to take my fully loaded dump trailer over uneven ground. Somehow weight was transferred from one axle to the other and bent that axle. I assume that going over a hump with a dip on the far side created that problem. Approaching the hump/dip combo, all of the axles were contacting the ground. When the front axle was on the hump, the rear axle still had ground contact. But when the rear axle went over the hump and the front axle was over the dip, the front axle was suspended for bit transferring all the weight to the back axle. How did I know the axle was bent? Well, it wasn't close enough to the frame for the tire to rub paint, but it did keep any dirt from building up on the frame. I could fit the palm of my hand between the tire and frame on three of the tires, but the bent one had no room to fit my hand. About a thousand dollars later, I'm back in business. This time, I'll make sure to keep my loaded trailer on level ground.

I kinda got a bad feeling When you put those first buckets of dirt and the forward end of the trailer. But at least you could get your skid steer in the trailer to get it all out. Some folks haven’t been that lucky and they had to shovel it out by hand. Imagine what would have been the weight of that dirt had a thunderstorm rolled in? Yikes. 😮

I have a much, much smaller dump trailer, it will hold 2 yards of leaves or mulch, but tops out at 1/2 yard of sand or dirt. Just because it fits doesn't mean you can always fill it up.

If ya ever over load it again use your loader to assist the lift. Once you get the bed up a couple inches they will usually go at that point. It just has to overcome those first few inches. We do it all the time.

I've done something very similar to this. A while back I needed some dirt and I had this little harbor freight utility trailer I built some sides for. I calculated it could hold 3 yards of dirt by volume. I went to the materials place and asked for 3 yards please. The lady at the desk looked out the window at my Audi and little trailer and said "Can your trailer hold 6000 pounds?" "no, no it cannot, thank you so much for asking, I"ll take 1 yard please" . It struggled with that 1 yard even and I ended up bending the frame a good bit when I unloaded it from the rear and the tongue weight increased and bent the frame the jack was on.

You'll learn , I ain't saying nothing ! When I seen the trailer and knew what you were loading. Makes you wish you had an excavator to reach up and scrape it out. Had to do that many times in my past experiences driving a dump truck but we knew we'd need an excavator to scrape the beds out but we were hauling further than what you were hauling. I had a c5500 gmc with a drama with a 40' gooseneck. I was tagged for 42000 gvw and I was going thru the rockies and all over the LOWER 48 and Canada. Fun times. Yes I laughed and shook my head! Lol!

There is a telescoping cylinder option at Diamond C that would work way better on that trailer. Scissor lift only work when the load is over the axles. If you put all that same dirt in the back 1/2 of the trailer it would have lifted just fine.

So that’s a 16ft dump with 4 ft sides. I’m guessing you had somewhere in the neighborhood of 25- 27 k in dirt on there. Years ago I had a 14 ft dump that I had the same problem with. The place I was getting dirt told me a skid loader bucket weighed about 1000 pounds. So I ordered 10 buckets I stopped the guy loading me due and asked how much do the buckets weigh I will never forget what he told me. Each bucket weighed about 1800 pounds by his estimate and I tend to believe home the dirt was going over the sides of the trailer and the tires were looking like they were struggling

Load a few feet in front of your farthest forward axle. Load the rest to the back. Pulls fine and will dump. Obviously still don't overload. I do this with an old Bri-Mar tandem dual dump with a scissor hoist and it never struggles with 8 tons of rock or dirt.

The longer the trailer the more upside-down you are on leverage gain, which greatly hampers total lift. if you keep the vehicle side light you can maybe still packs the bottom 60% pretty well.

Dump trailers are versatile but not the best. A dump truck is much better. That said I think a 7x12 or 7x14 is the optimal dump trailer size. Any longer and your dump angle and weight distribution suffers. New paint doesn't help as the dirt sticks and doesn't slide easily. I would have recommend bumping the trailer by backing up and braking hard to encourage some movement and you likely could have dumped it. That trailer (axles and frame) is probably more than capable of handling the weight you put on it. We have a 7x14 14k PJ dump trailer and it's a great all around trailer. I can haul a skid or mini ex (barely) as well as transport materials. But I can only haul about 1/3 what a 10 wheel dump truck could carry so it really starts to become inefficient.

That trailer isn't designed optimally. I can see two flaws immediately. A- The axles are a little too far back. B-the main pivot for the dump bed has almost zero cantilever built into it, it's too near the end of the bed. I have a Load Trail 14' deck over dump trailer I use for gravel and dirt. My buddy has a 16' dump trailer by Big Tex. His pivot is like this Diamond C and he can't put more than 10k of dirt/gravel in the bed or he can't dump it. I've had as much as 13k in mine and it will still dump easily, since my main pivot is about 2' forward of the rear of the bed. IPhone footage looks great. I'd like to hear more about the tripods and editing systems you use. Even without the flaws in design, you definitely overloaded that trailer, maybe by twice it's weigh capacity. When the load material sticks to the bed, hitting the bed with a mallet from the bottom while the bed is raised has helped me a lot.

To everyone who thinks this is the trailer problem go take a look at the size, axles, tires etc of vehicles that haul dirt, gravel or sand commercially. A dump truck that could haul that volume of dirt would be a huge with lots of axles. This type of trailer is a great mulch, brush hauler plus you can put a skid steer into it. They are very popular with tree removal business industry.

If I ever bought a dump trailer, I’d insist on twin hydraulic lift cylinders to ensure sufficient lift capacity regardless of load.
@ericcrockett479
@ericcrockett479 2 года назад
Actually the twin cylinders aren't any stronger. Yes you have 2 pushing instead of 1 but they are mounted further back on the trailer and counteract the extra cylinders power. The front mount telescopic cylinder will definitely dump anything you can put in the trailer

Scissor lift dump needs help getting started when overloaded. Get the box a few inches off the frame and the lift will usually take over from there. In this situation I use a bottle jack under the box to get it started or you can place a 4x under the front of the box before loading if you think there will be an issue lifting. Reason is the scissor mechanism is pushing horizontally when all the way down and can’t get enough vertical push to start the lift when overloaded

Im not sure what brand it is but i borrowed nieghbors 14k dump trl after getting material for her with it. I wanted 3 yards of topsoil and first trip up to pit they loaded me but i was way too light so had to go back up for more. Then my second load they dumped more in to start and when i went to scale out i was like 29k gross. My trk wieghs 9k and the dump trl i believe is around 5k. So im guessing i had around 15k of dirt and trl says 10k dump limit. I dumped out a bit and shovel some back forward for tongue wieght. Nieghbors trl is a single tripple stage ram like a dump trk and didnt have a problem unloading around 50% overload and my 97 f350 7.3ps in the pit had no issues with that wieght

Don't know exactly how large you dump trailer is but when we rent a 40 yard dumpster they say that only 12 inches deep with dirt, concreate or gravel. I almost destroyed my truck when I was doing landscaping when I thought I would put a yard of topsoil in the bed. When the operator at the supply yard asked if I wanted it in one trip I answered yes. Huge mistake. It put my truck on the bump stops and why it didn't cause the tires to blow out, I will never understand. Fortunately the job was close the the supply yard and I CAREFULLY drove back to the job, scared to death that the tires would roll off the rim. My lesson learned the hard and SCARY way.

I've owned several dump trailers. Only one of them actually pulled the electric power from the truck. It does not have an internal battery to run the pump. It has 1/0 wire running from truck batteries to the pump. That was a tremendous help. 2nd the deck height of the trailer will make a big difference in getting material that sticks to the deck out. Higher the deck the higher you can lift before the rear hits the ground. This creates a steeper angle material slides outs. My deck height is 40".

Double acting direct connection hydraulic ram at the front of the trailer is the strongest lift capabilities. You can add a vibrator system to the dump that will break up and ease the unloading of "sticky" material. What might have worked better for your issue was to use the skid loader to help lift the dump body as the hydraulics would have held it up once it was raised, but just didn't have the umph to lift it.

This has happened to me a couple times. Our solution was to use our loader to assist and help lift the bed.
@fuddrucker74
@fuddrucker74 2 года назад
That's fraught with danger too. The box was built to match the capabilities of the rams. If you take and lift with a machine the weight could cause the box to buckle in the middle of the span of the box. Also, there are no static lift points to assist at. Meaning, you very well might rip the front of the box up too. You have to know what the capacity of your equipment is and then be aware of what doubling or trippling that limit involves. He's lucky he didn't blow out the suspension while climbing up there with the track loader
@fuddrucker74
@fuddrucker74 2 года назад
@@82ndpara21 any load that supercedes the trailers capabilities to the extent it won't budge it off the deck frame is potentially damaging. Add in the fact that the track loader is another 12000 lbs +, you can see what you're dealing with this trailer was overloaded by AT LEAST twice is rates limit. That's not 4k over. Off the top of my head it was probably 10-15k over.ive been over 4k before because I accepted the risks involved. And i had the means to get the item 4 off if it didnt lift. Which it did. This wasn't that.
@fuddrucker74
@fuddrucker74 2 года назад
You have to know what the capacity of your equipment is and then be aware of what doubling or trippling that limit involves. You're lucky you didn't blow out the while climbing up there with the track loader. There's no replacement for experience. Snd you only get that THROUGH experience. Even though that material is well aerated it was still (as you found out) exceedingly heavy. You need roblearnnthe relative weights of material that are going in the trailer. But again, that only comes through experience. I'm glad nothing was broken and you got off with just some extra work and a story you can use as a cautionary tale.

Here is my story of over loading my util trailer. I had an old frame of popup camper (6ft x 11ft) that a had put PT plywood floor on it and side boards around it. (I think the old camper had a weight rating of 3000 pounds but I had only reg as 2000 pounds so I wouldn't need a title). so hadn't been used much for a couple of years so the tires had been in bad shape. friend had extra dirt and I had a need for some fill. I made a couple of trips of trips with loading the dirt on the front of the trailer so to spreed some of the load onto the truck hitch. (didn't want to blow out a tire) all was fine until I decided to get new tires for it on the 4th trip. So we used the tractor to load more dirt onto the trailer like we had been doing. loaded the dirt onto the front half of the trailer (between the hitch and the axle). so as I didn't have the fear of the tires blowing out, we loaded more and more dirt to the front half. (if we had spread-ed the dirt out on the full length of the trailer we would have been fine but that wasn't what happen). so I had left his house and went down the road until I hit the first big bump. yep, folded the the front frame at the A frame were it met the box frame of the rest of the trailer. so had to shovel the dirt to the back of the pickup by hand and make multiple trips to empty the trailer. managed to straiten the frame of the trailer so it wasn't dragging on the ground and got the trailer home. so after rebuilding the frame (got good at welding by the time I got done) of the trailer, it is still in use today. I still LOL about the dumb things you do when you don't think out about it first. I have pictures of the opps and the rebuild of it. I have another popup that will become my new future util trailer when I have the time to do the build. It is a little bigger, has a higher weight limit (over 3500 pounds) and electric brakes. I plan to beef up the frame in the same place when I build the util trailer.
