you might think about installing a trailer hitch on the front end. That make life much easier.

Superb job. So many things to backing trailers. My wife constantly tells people, I can put a trailer down a mouse hole. Like you, I only use my side mirrors. Even though my camping trailer is 10m, and it has a rear viewing camera, I only use my trucks side mirrors.

I was taught to back trailers by mirrors and then being an interstate truck driver I have perfected that as there is NO back window to look through, I just shake my head when I see anyone backing up turning over to see through the back window of a car let alone a trailer. I totally agree the longer the draw bar the easier it is to back a trailer and 6x4 trailers are a pain but can be done if you have patience. Matt, it might have been better for us to have one camera view on each side of the vehicle (to see what you are seeing and to better understand the issues) but I'm not sure if you have more than one camera/phone to use.

Hey Tim. Totally agree. This was filmed by myself on the spur of the moment. We have full production cameras and gopros etc etc etc so we could totally have gone to town but the difference is this took an hour of my time and the time commitment goes up from there.

I learned on tractors as well. We moved a lot of hay, wood, animals and everything else you can imagine on all sizes of trailers. During some family gatherings we had competitions with the tractor and a 4-wheeled wagon that had a pivoting tongue. Those are the hardest things ever to reverse. I wasn’t the best, but I held my own! 😁

I’m with you Matt I always use my mirrors rather than over the shoulder. The only thing I would suggest is if you are dropping a trailer over an edge so you lose sight of it, especially smaller box trailers or even more challenging an empty boat trailer. Stick a broomstick or something upright in the back corner so you can see it.

Have you ever had the situation where you jump into a long tray truck with no trailer and go to reverse and your Brain gets all confused and turns the wheel like you had a trailer on? I’ve had that happen a couple of times. It’s a funny experience.

Another great tip for reversing any trailer is to place your hand on the bottom of your steering wheel that way when you turn the wheel left the trailer goes in that direction.

@jackar1ah

Hi Matt, one tip I picked up along the way was to turn towards the mirror you can see the trailer in... Definitely agree that bigger trailers can be easier to reverse in some situations, though it can be a plus in tight spots to have the trailer turn really easily due to a short drawbar and single axle....

@maxgood42 3 года назад
I feel your pain...😢🤣 Yeah I drive Roadtrains and Bdoubles blah blah blah... I recently got a Ford ute and modded the rear for towing, making it as short as I can get, (with engineering I could get shorter) and taking a car on a car trailer to KIA (and that's a stress fall drive way) was way easier than ever.
@MadMatt4WD
@MadMatt4WD 3 года назад
I’ve been surprised that many of the truckies see this as harder to reverse.

@@MadMatt4WD Trade secret ...... like your long trailer, it gets easier with longer trailers , it's multiple trailers that get tricky at times. But come home to my 6x4 and I can often get court out by how short they can be. another hint to trailer design, make the draw bar as long as possible. I built the trailer in my vid with the Cortina at Mallala and it has a 3m drawbar and LT16's that make it very cooperative.
@MadMatt4WD
@MadMatt4WD 3 года назад
Yes I can agree with you there.
@rbrdly

If you struggle with the 'reversed nature' of steering whilst reversing (turning right makes the trailer go left and vice versa), place your hands on the bottom of the steering wheel and then the directions will be the same.

You want to learn how to reverse a trailer, get a small one and practice reverse parallel parking it. Fun to see the look on people's faces down the street. And if you want to learn how to reverse a b-double, honestly the best way to do that is to get a model / toy truck and play with that. It needs to be properly scaled but once you get the hang of doing it with a toy it's a heap easier when you jump into the truck. Beyond that, there's simply no substitute for practice.

Hey mat why did u choose petrol over diesel in your 105
@MadMatt4WD
@MadMatt4WD 3 года назад
Hi Heath, First I'm a diesel mechanic and have owned diesel so I see they have a place but from my experience, they are very expensive to run overall. My petrol is thirsty on fuel but that's the only area where it's more expensive than the diesels. It's cheaper to buy by a lot. It's more powerful for $ spend. It's smooth. It's service intervals are twice as long and can be extended if you wish. It's easy to work on. It can go through bonnet deep water.

I reckon by far that the most important tip is to hold onto the bottom of the steering wheel. Want the trailer to go left, the bottom of the wheel goes left. Trailer to the right, bottom of the wheel goes right. It works a treat every time. Another one is when backing down a steep drive pull on a fair bit of hand brake (useless in a 105 series) so the front brakes don’t lock up and you loose steering. Well done with that drive of yours, looked like a bit of a mission.

I've been in b double and road trains for a long time and currently a few weeks into truck and dog......they are all very different animals 😂😂 but after playing with the big gear the little gear gets really hard 😂😂😂, takes me a couple of goes with my boat before I remember how to do it 😂, but like you said, hit your inside apex as tight as you can to your pivot point normally or centre it if you need to snake down somewhere so you have as much room both ways to catch, great job on a tight driveway with a big drop away 👌
