In the novel, Rimuru made sure each of the soldiers felt pain before he wasted them. It wasn't instant like shown in the anime.

Fun fact: Charon is named after Kharon, an Greek ferryman who carries the souls of those who have been given funeral rites across the rivers Acheron and Styx, which separate the worlds of the living and the dead.
