I actually think the shot at 8:56 works decently well, true the foreground in itself isn't particularly interesting compared to the rocks, but the light through the photo creates a really nice S-shape binding the foreground to the midground, and the midground (ridge) pointing up into the inversion helps make the eye continue through the fog to the background. But what a gorgeous morning! Not jealous at all 😂

Living in the flatlands of the soft southern shandy drinkers when anything higher than 10 metres is considered a mountain, I am soooooooo envious!

Your images of the island's poking out through the mist are wonderfully dreamy. When you were showing us however I felt like the image was crying out for a contrasting really dark mount as the white I felt detracted from the natural drama of the unique conditions on that morning.

So glad to see you out again Nigel. I recently message you asking which hikes.to go on while I visited the lakes for a few days, and you mentioned this very hike. I even booked a bed and breakfast in Keswick for this reason. I live in Canada now but back home for Christmas and a wedding, so was keen to bag some beautiful hikes to show my partner. Unfortunately for us the weather was awful. None stop rain, strong winds and low cloud covering the mountains, and I'll I hoped for was weather like this. However we still made the most of it and enjoyed our time, mostly in pubs and coffee shops. Your video today has made me happy though, not jealous. I'm happy to see you out again and I'm still excited to see these conditions for myself next time I'm home. Cheers

I think that the photo of the birds flying through the fog bank is my favorite. I know it wasn't as planned as the others on this day, but your on the fly framing and then post production editing just makes the image sing. Absolutely wonderful.

As always a number of tips to take with me on my next field trip, the first for sure to get up and be on top of the mountain before sunrise ;-), but seriously more experimenting with my 100-400mm is for sure on my 2023 to-do list and more printing :-)! The Pano stack is by far the best. The portrait format shots are essentially photos of two halves where the foreground really doesn't "connect" to the distance: there's just too little hooking the scene together.

Really beautiful shots Nigel. Love how jazzed you were about this day! Funny, I actually really love the one with the grass - I think it's because it reminds of the tufts of grass in the foreground of one of your shots from I believe it was Iceland... And love the pano in the photo book!

I really enjoy your work. Landscape photography is such a relaxing genre. The vast majority of my photographs are landscapes. I recently had of my landscape photographs printed and framed. It was a birthday present for a friend of mine. We both were pleasantly surprised how well the print turned out. I couldn't stop looking at it.

You are such an inspiration and your enthusiasm is infectious. I have felt this joy so many times on top of mountains, at sunrises, sunsets etc which my pals and I always called "Synapse Collapse". I just went for a nature shoot at minniewaska park in New York. It was so incredible so I understand this so much! !

Stunning conditions and some really beautiful images Nigel, I think 24mm was the absolute spot on choice for the landscape shape images, the lighting, colour and details look mighty impressive indeed. That 100-400 Z lens really is a beauty, I’ll have to get one for sure, as you say the 70-200 is fantastic but just a bit short for some of the cameo type longer focal length landscape images which have always been a favourite of mine. Thanks for the heads up on Saal books, looks like a really interesting idea, will check out their website👍. Hello Nigel, First happy new year 2023. I do know that feeling of get to the top of a mountain after not been well. I remember after a 9 months in Hospital follows by a year+ of leaning to walk and building some strength up, tackling helvellyn and I made it with a lot of help and time. No camera though. But good to see you out. Keep well, keep safe and enjoy life. P.S. I have the 100mm-400mm on order. Order it when in came out back in December 2021, even went for a demo in the store 8 weeks later, but I am still waiting for it. I ordered a Z9 in January 2022 from the same place and had it in my hands in February 2022. I just think Nikon do not like my.

I like the wide angle at 16:00 the best mainly because of the colour, but also because it doesn't give as much space to the rocks in the foreground. Something to keep in mind is that it's difficult to judge the scale of the rocks in the foreground in the wide angle shots because there is not much like grass or something for reference. It hard to tell whether its a rock formation in the distance or a rock literally in front of the camera when you first look at it if you don't know the place. Great Vlog Nigel, beautiful location and stunning conditions. Would be difficult not to get a few keepers under such circumstances. Couldn’t agree more regarding having photobooks produced, I don’t print yet (will be soon) but having a permanent record of your best work and major trips is very cost effective and they make a great keepsake to look back on. I have recently had my first produced covering my first two years in photography, it was with another producer (won’t name them) but I am over the moon with the result. I fully intend to have more produced on future trips to Iceland and Orkney, this year and next respectively. They also act as a comparison on how your skills are progressing, I have limited wall space so are a brilliant alternative 😉📷

Great video, Nigel. As to the image at 7:28 (and I have not looked beyond that). To me this is illustrative of the "Square Law" (*) of perspective. This boils down to: when you look at something X*Y frame size at A distance, then at 2A distance you get 2X*2Y - four times the area. This means that details all get smaller. Being exponential of nature, differences in depiction size of similar sized things in the subject, are most dramatical nearby. It's the fist extended towards a camera that in the photo gets bigger than the person's head. Or it's also the "compression" effect of larger distances. Following from that exponential relation between distance and what's in the frame. While the Square Law relates to distance, the angle of the lens does not change anything to that. But the angle of the lens getting wider gives more foreground in the frame and this makes the exponential effect extremely visible, noticeable. In short, most people need to go through a serious learning process to begin to understand what is at play and how to manage this. So in the shot at 7:28, I feel the foreground is way too dominant relative to the mid-ground and background. Purely because of the foreground effect of the wide-angle times Square Law effect. Take screen capture and paste into an image editing app. Crop the foreground away until where the rocks in the middle begin, the ones that Nigel doubts, and IMO you have a more impactful, dramatic if you like, picture. You could not have taken that shot with another lens with a narrower angle, without going panorama and stitching. Also the wide angle allows to stay level/plumb with the camera (which prevents perspective distortion that impacts how we see vertical scale). With a 35mm in portrait mode and some - guess - 5 or 6 shots in a row you might have gotten this same result (compared to my crop). The advantage of that would have been a much higher resolution. The disadvantage would have been more work, larger files, potential time parallax between shots., etc. Personally, with my traveller tripod, and its modified Arca compatible ball head with pano rotation at the top plate, and Arca style L bracket on the camera, I would only have needed a lightweight so-called nodal slide to make this work (that's a rail that goes between the Arca ball head quick release and with a rider has an Arca quick release to mount the camera. Finding a lens's nodal point is a piece of cake. Note it down and reuse it with the scale markers on the nodal slide. Anyhow, cropped to a much less high frame, I think the image at 7:28 gains impact a lot. But that's personal. (*) the famous "Inverse Square Law" of flash exposure in photography uses the Square Law of perspective as is, but inverts it in order to relate the intensity of flash light to the area being lit. As at 2 times the distance we get 4 times more area, using the same flash now means at 2 times the distance we get 1/2^2=1/4 flash intensity.

Great video as usual - Very informative - thank you. I also have a Nikon Z7 II and Nikkor Z 35mm 1.8 S, Z 50mm f1.8 S, they are great, but I'm missing a longer zoom. I didn't buy Nikkor Z 24-70mm f2.8 because it is quite heavy. I have swapped from DSLR D810 into Z to have a less heavy bag. The Z7 II plus the small lens is great combo. Waiting ...maybe will be some Tamron lenses on Z mount soon...who knows ? If not, the Nikkor Z 24-120mm f4 S looks quite impressive, and I will probably go for it. I also have the small Nikkor Z 14-30mm f4 S and I am also very pleased. I have downloaded your free "7 ways to use composition to improve your photography" about week ago - also very informative. Sadly can't afford the Greenland trips, but am keen to join you in the Lake District....keeping my eyes peeled - just order up a nice inversion for me! Nice to see you back out on those fells, there must have been moments when you worried that it wouldn't happen but thankfully all appears good. I enjoyed the video and the content but for me the images I liked most were those taken with the long lens, for me the WA shots just didn't do it. This is unusual as normally your WA shots are awesome but somehow for me they mist (excuse pun) the mark. I know that you took a few long lens shots and when you showed them they were the ones that told the story. Apologies for being a bit negative.

Hi Nigel, nice video again. I have a question about the Kase filters. I like to buy a set for my fuji 10-24 and 55-200 on my fuji x-t3. But should I buy the 72 mm (like my biggest lens) or a bit bigger like the 77 mm? I hope you can help me out. Or someone else ')
