I absolutely agree. Even when associated with a known and respected guitarist. Guitar prices have bombed recently ( last 5 years ) and a bloke in Sydney was trying to get US$25,000.00 for a mid 60's Strat which was road worn to the max. I always thought instruments were meant to be cherished and looked after. Don't like this beaten up stuff at any price. 1964 Hofner 500/1 Bass owner.

Maybe 5 years ago I met a guy who owned a little shop that specialized in vintage guitars. Most of his business was vintage acoustics but he also bought and sold quite a few vintage solid body Fenders and a few Gibsons. He told me that he would take really crappy pictures of the guitars he was selling and post them for sale at a ridiculous price on a different account. Then he would take the same guitar, take a bunch of really nice high quality photos with good lighting and documentation and post it at the price he was looking for. He said the thought behind it was that someone looking for that specific model and spec of guitar would see both listings and then jump on the "real" listing because it looked like such a good deal in comparison. I have no idea how long he did this for, if it ever actually worked, or if he ever got caught. Super shady but you would never guess it looking at the guy. He was probably 75, super quiet and polite, sat around his shop all day every day sipping on the same glass of scotch from open to close listening to folk music on vinyl.

Back in 1987 I had the pleasure of playing Brad Whitford's '59 sunburst Les Paul through one of his Marshall plexi heads on a 4 x 12 Marshall cab. Someone from Ocean Way recording studio dropped it off to my roommate Frank Levi III. Frank had done either recap and/or modifications to it at the studio. I didn't even ask why they dropped it off, but it was agony waiting on Frank to come home, as drooled over it! lol When he finally came home maybe an hour later I knew he knew I wanted to play it. I negotiated 1 minute. Hey better than nothing right. It wasn't because Frank was being a jerk about it, but he knew I wanted to crank it up in our studio apartment with paper thin walls. So anyway that minute was one very blissful minute. Plus it was great research in a way because I had just gutted my 1973 6- EL34 , Partridge transformer equipped Dallas Arbiter SOUND CITY MkIV 120 head with great original filter caps and mustard radial caps throughout...and I was just hungry for raw Marshall JMP tone. So I worked from the less-complex-than the SC MkIV, Marshall 1959, 1969 and 1971 schematics, threw on a post phase inverter master volume (aka see- Train Wreck Type I PPinv MV) and began the tweaks. V1a plate cap position can make or break great amp tone, yes there is a difference in capacitor makes don't let anyone tell you different. In the end I got what I was after- Angus Young's Marshall JMP 1959 Super Lead 2-Channel 100 Watt head. I had a stock 50 watt Sound City that was bone stock that I loved and the only mod was a one wire cascade channel jumper. Funny thing, I distinctly recall being in a 'less hip' chain music store and the sales guy saying, " Oh if you have a Sound City you need one of these". As he held it up I thought, " what's that cheesy looking thing?" and declined. Turns out he was hipper than me. It was an original Dallas Arbiter Range Master Treble Booster. It was probably in that store since it was open. Dallas Arbiter made these as pretty much necessary to overdrive their wall shaking master volume-free amps. Fortunately the early 1980's Guitar Player magazine published a how-to of the type I Master Volume. My bands other guitar player also benefitted with us throwing it on his Ampeg V4 head.

@The Goo Fighters I have lots of high end guitars. Bought an Harley Benson Tele for 160 euros. Had to do a little setup, but the guitar rocks. You can buy a Sire s7 for about 500 euros, and that is a proper piece of kit. Last year I bought a used mid 80s Ibanez am205 for about 800 bucks. In my 45 years of playing I have never come across a Gibson as well put together as an Ibanez am205. My point is that nowadays you are really spoilt for choice for very little money

That ‘66 Flying V has more going for it than you think. It’s one of a small number of original ‘58/‘59 korina bodies and necks that were found in the ‘60s at the Gibson factory with no hardware or pickups, and assembled with new ‘60s hardware, nickel or chrome plated instead of gold. I don’t know what years they came out-I’ve read anywhere between ‘63 and ‘66. A small batch of korina Explorer husks were completed at the same time. They’re all really scarce, and Gibson redesigned the Flying V in ‘67 anyway, much to my disappointment, as I dug the look of the korina ones. In ‘68 I tried one of the new redesigned ones, and was glad I’d gotten an SG in ‘67! Flying Vs aren’t comfortable for me to play...

Have you tried an Eastman? Many people are saying they're better than Gibson's and are half the price. From what I've seen on YT they sound great! The French Polish finish (they call it antique varnish) on solid body styles looks awesome. I've ordered a Romeo SC model but am now also looking at a black SB59/v (the v stands for varnish). Comes with Lollar pups and high end hardware & electronics. Their 335 (T186) has been called the 335 killer. They offer it in different sizes too, T186/16" T185/15" T184/14". Definitely one for you to compare with a Gibson!

I am sure that others will hate on me for this, but please don't, I love other opinions on here and I can make an argument both ways. Interested: not guitar, but value. At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the most expensive guitar is the Hendrix Flying V, that he bought, not a Fender he was paid to play at woodstock, on condition, that he would be allowed to burn it after, but he must have spent forever, personalizing that V, but is it worth a stupid amount of money, not any Strat, just because Hendrix bought it and played it for years? There is no right or wrong answer, I wouldn't buy any at those prices, even if I hit the lottery, but those that choose to, I can't fault anyone for that. * I like Reverb, to compare normal prices of many guitars, similar, to get a normal price range of worth. I likely overpaid, to have a 2007 Jem7VWH, white with gold hardware, because it was 20 years after it came out, but it had to be that colour, because Steve Vai plays that guitar, or similar to it. I paid likely way more than worth, but others were going high too, likely for the reason, so I am guilty too, but I can make and argument both ways. If I had the cash, had a 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard, as a kid, became a multi-millionaire and wanted that guitar back, never thinking it would appreciate that crazy, for nostalgia, so be it. That is the same, I think, with Muscle Cars that people owned as kids, let the go for families, got very successful and wanted that feeling back and if $275,000, so be it and a bidding war. Don't like the price, don't buy it, but one will. Clapton played and loved his Gibson ES-335 the most, his Les Paul second, his SG third, did not want to part with those at all, but what "Blackie" sold for, he could care less, because Fender was paying everyone to play Strats, when the Flying V came out and the Explorer, to counter the Jaguar and Mustang and Fender counted back by endorsing everyone. * He said it, not me! *. I did not know that Hendrix love his V so much, SRV love his V (watch SRV Flying V on youtube) and everything I thought I knew about my icons and what they played and really loved was BS. Hendrix and SRV = Iconic Strats, but to them, the Flying V's...what...but shockingly true. Clapton, good on him, sold his favourite guitars for his rehab clinic (funding), but I did not know that he loved his Gibsons so much and just like Hendrix and SRV, pay me to play one, Gibson won't so fine. That flipped my world upside down, but true. He touches one, plays one once and it sells for $400,000 to millions. Worth it, not worth it...if you have the cash and I love him too, go for it. *** This is a great, great video, food for thought, no right or wrong, but stopping to think of the variables listed.in the video. I want a Clapton/Beck Artist Strat, but if they didn't play something like it, never mind...interesting. Nice job on this video! I can literally argue both sides and not right or wrong. What a buyer wants is just right I guess. I am loving this video more and more! Well done! I am buying a guitar right away, so the timing of seeing this is great! LOL I was thinking of Clapton Strat/Beck Strat/SG 61 and who all played them, but for the SG, I like Angus, Clapton, Trucks, Santana, Townsend, D.Allman, Zappa, Iommi (Clapton on a list was 2 of lovers and greats...how much did he play his?) If they did not play them, am I even thinking of a 61 reissue...I doubt it. The most thought I have put in before buying a guitar. Thank you video host! Great food for thought and the power of endorsement, or nostalgia. Marketing, is effective, but more than I thought. No Vai and I am fine with an RG550, but Vai and I need a Jem. I am a sucker too, I guess. That is ok! Loved, loved this video! Sorry so long! It just was that thought provoking!

I don't get guitar collecting anymore. Usually, something's that old, broke in, wood's dried out, sounds great--it's worth a lot. Now it's all about how it looks. Is it flamed, any Bigsby holes, blah blah blah. Who cares? How does it sound?

I'm thinking I'm the odd one out that prefers plain over any flame...Just not a fan of the flame tops. Little bit of flame maybe but if I had a choice between two in good shape plain and flamed and if I could afford it I'd almost always go plain

An expensive vintage guitar is by far the worst investment that you can make, because the risk of buying a counterfeit is very high due to the enormous profit margins. The second drawback is that you can't get any financial return, it is just frozen capital.

I seriously can't understand why anyone would pay more than 2k for any guitar. What do you even do with it. Put it under glass and brag? I have a $300 harley benton that plays and sounds better than my 76 Gibson .... seriously though why people? Stop giving Gibson stupid values and buy guitars that actually make sense ! I think its just redirect to spend more than a years salary on a guitar.. I'm sorry but a $300 dollar guitar sounds and plays better than a $100,000 dollar guitar ! I don't care who made it if it is a player its a good guitar. Everything else is artificially increased because of dumb people!

It's just the market. You can argue that about buying a classic $100,000 Porsche 911 over a new $20,000 Toyota Camry. Still doesn't negate the supply vs demand for these things.

Not all old and expensive guitars sound good. You can be sure the really good ones never show up in Reverb...they are in the collections of Joe Bonamassa , Billy Gibbons or some rich Producer.
