This is what Harrison Ford had to say on the issue back in 2008: "Q:Are we to believe that Indy has this indestructible hat that survives from adventure to adventure? A: Yes, you're supposed to believe that. That's why, when he takes it out of his closet, it's the same hat as last time, and it's the same whip, which he wears to match his "goin' digging" outfit. He has other hats for other occasions but he does wear that hat occasionally outside his archeological expeditions. He's wearing that hat at his wedding, though maybe you could call that another adventure."
At the time, the only instance of Indy's fedora coming off was in "Last Crusade", to add tension to the over-the-cliff-scene. "Oh, that's not good" I said!
In 1999 I actually ordered a hat from, and spoke with Richard Swales (at Herbert Johnson) . He was very nice and talked a little about fitting the hat for Ford. I mostly remember him saying at the end of our little conversation; "I'll have it to you straight away." And he wasn't kidding, I think I had it in less than two weeks. I heard he retired in 2003, when the Indy dvd set came out, and he was mentioned by name in the special features. He actually trimmed the brim, and shaped the hat that he sent to me. It is much more of a LC hat than a "Raiders" hat though. As I recall, you didn't actually get a choice then though. He did put the IJ initials on the sweatband though, which I understand the film hats had. I still have the hat, in the same hatbox he shipped it to me in.
The thing I loved in the fourth one was Indy’s reintroduction: you see some guy get pulled out of the trunk of the car, and the hat falls on the ground. You never see his face, but you see the silhouette on the car door as he puts the hat back on, and you know it’s Indy. That scene gave me chills.

@@FS2K4Pilotwould've been better too if there wasn't so much bad CGI, that's what really ruined it for me. Most one the most beloved aspects of the Indy franchise is the practical nature of most of the effects and the stunts.
@@cleverusername9369 Of course even that could’ve been overlooked if the end had been written better. IMHO Last Crusade had about the best ending because it’s character-driven, not big, loud, or flashy (even though there were some really neat effects in there). For example, when Indy sets aside the intellectual, sticks out his foot and steps into nothingness, or when Henry calls him Indiana for the first time.
You should try to find a copy of "The Young Indiana Jones" series. I consider it very faithful and loving to the original films as well as being incredibly entertaining

For me personally, The "Raiders" Hat is the Iconic hat. Much like the rest of his look in that film, he looks like an authentic adventure who has lived in his clothes and both his jacket and hat appear to be well worn and loved. As I said, Indy looks authentic in Raiders of the Lost Ark, however the rest of the movies he looks to be wearing a clear costume design. I don't know if that makes sense. 🤷♂️
I agree with the whole statement. The Raiders hat is definitely the most iconic “Indy” hat to me. And the rest of your comment does make sense. I like how Raiders kind of utilizes all of his gear. Zipped jacket occasionally, dirty work gloves when needed, no jacket with rolled sleeves sometimes. After that it’s just following the preestablished look. But I still highly enjoy all the looks and little variations.

Nice video. Not long after Raiders came out in '81 I started collecting Fedoras in Australia. They were a dime a dozen in any op shop. Well, my mother bought them as I was 13 but already into theater acting and told her we needed them as props which we kinda did. Heaven knows where they went. Over the years they disappeared. Today I can't find one anywhere that looks the part. Prior the release of Crystal Skull I managed to find one online. It took a bit of bashing and weathering and ended up looking pretty good. But that one has since disappeared as well...
I wonder if the hat(s) went to the same place as those proverbial socks go that routinely disappear 🙂 I found a good fedora (original to the period) in an antique store a number of years ago - best place to look - as for me, the reproductions just don't quite get it.
@@IamChevalier We have a family tree book and a lot of my long gone relatives in photos from Australia in the 30s and 40s are wearing the wide-brim-high-crown. Indy's fedora has been mentioned occasionally as being the 'Australian Version'. I believe it. Hard to tell what colour they were in the pictures but most of the fedoras that I had were grey. I guess I had 7 or 8 in all but only two were brown. It's funny because I needed (wanted) one for my role in a theatre production in '04 (a reporter during the American prohibition period) and the best we could find was a white one. Brown fedoras of the kind seems to be very scarce. I have a friend that is contracted to clear out deceased estates for auction but no joy in the whole wide world even there...

Hello! Great video! Answered any questions I've had over the decades about that most cool of hats. I've had a Temple style Indy Fedora from Stetson made of xxx beaver felt now for some 36 yrs. A constant companion in good weather and bad, I can testify to a lot of cleaning and blocking needed to keep it presentable today. I've got other hats, a Tam from England and a Panama from Ecuador but the Indiana Jones Fedora is always the one that gets the nod when I'm going into the Rough. Yeah, well, check out Charlton Heston's look in SECRET OF THE INCAS (1954) and you'll find that Indy's outfit (including his hat) wasn't all that original.
I never would have thought people would pay that much attention to a hat after they bought it, outside of caring for it. You bought a look and fit you like and that's it. I must plead ignorance on this topic not having grown up in the hat wearing era, though when I was a little kid, my grandfather, a hat wearing man, gave me one saying that it was time for me to be wearing a hat. You know, I’ve heard that some fans really hated the hat from Temple, but I actually thought it looked better, and I could never quite put my finger on exactly what it was that I thought looked better about it, thought I didn’t care for how loose the front pinch was. Based on your explanation of how it differed movie-to-movie, I think the slightly more tapered and shorter crown appeals to me more, and the fact that it’s worn straight. I’m thinking about getting an “Indy” hat from Herbert Johnson, perhaps I’ll get the “Temple” hat instead of a “Raiders” hat and try to tighten the front pinch just a little bit.
If you watch the movies in chronological time (last crusade, Temple, Raiders, Kingdom, Destiny,) you’ll watch the pinch of the hat get tighter and tighter from when he was given the hat by Fedora, to when he was boarding the Bantu Wind in Raiders.
I've wanted a fadora hat since I was 11 after seeing Raiders for the first time and I finally succeeded in buying one from a hat store in Atlantic City. Sweet.
It was rewarding to see young Indy meet famous historical characters like Hemingway, Kafka, Fokker, Edison and so on As far as differences in the hat from film to film, one merely supposes the hat suffered some minor abuses, and Indy had the thing reblocked from time to time. I don't imagine Indy cared much whether the sides remained straight or tapered. He never seemed all that concerned with his appearance anyway. :-)
That's a good observation. In the Bantam books, Indy describes having the hat refelted, stitched, reblocked etc. So we know he does get it mended at least from what the books tell us.
My two cents on the inconsistency is this: A felt hat of that type cannot survive wear and tear for that long, and thus, should you want to keep it, it has to be relocked from time to time. So it could very well be that, with each refurbishment, the look changes. As for the Raiders difference, the hat is visibly more weathered in Raiders than it is at most any other point, so it might be that we are seeing the hat in its most dire state, its most worn out, then it is in all the other movies.
Having had a similar hat for many years, the front pinch is how you put it on and take it off, by doing this it also centres the hat on the head. When you wear a hat for a long time it is only natural for it to "age" with use no matter how well you look after it.

Good information. I didn't worry about the variations in the hat over the films, as that what happens to hats if they get beat up. As to the style itself, I found a vintage (probably 1930s) Knox premium that has remarkably similar looks to Indy's. High and straight crown, wide brim, same deep brown. I wondered for a minute if there was a connection. But then, that was more the style than.
I settled for an Akubra Adventure black fedora. The silhouette disappears when I’m wearing it. And the rabbit fur felt makes for a comfortable autumn and winter.hat. For the spring and summer, the new cotton Covenant brown fedora that came out this year will be my choice of wear.
To be honest when I'm watching an exciting action film, I don't pause it to see slight differences in a hat, but we know it's common to have multiples of items just in case, I do know that the Temple jacket had a longer body than later jackets, but given that Temple takes place first chronologically, I guess it doesn't matter too much!

Holmes's hat is known as the "Deerhunter" I believe, or perhaps "Deerstalker" Personally, I wear a "Pith Helmet" , an outdoor adventurers hat, but it breathes better...... useless in rain , of course Mine is rated to withstand a "Brazil nut thrown by a good howler monkey from 60 feet"....... quality hat, that. ;-)
It's an iconic hat but if you're a senior there is one hat that's more iconic. That's the one hoss wore in bonanza. The history of that hat goes back to an earlier bob hope western.
Like the Ark, Indy's hat, jacket, whip, and saddle from Last Crusade, along with Henry's hat and coat, were left in a non-descript storage room. I saw them when I was picking up some old office equipment. I didn't have the b***s to ask my contact if I could have them take a picture of me wearing Indy's gear, but they let me take a picture of the gear.

I don't think it particularly matters but ofcourse people will obsess about the smallest details, I mean Indy wears the same military style shirt but that gets destroyed and replaced and is apparently even different colours, from stone to khaki so why wouldn't the hat change? He knocks about his clothing as long as he keeps the theme the same it hardly matters.
Last time I went to Vegas I bought an official Indiana Jones fedora, it's my second most precious hat. Number one is my Led Zeppelin hat that Styx autographed for me. That's why I'll actually wear my fedora.
Herbert Johnson lost the original block years ago. So, it's all just a guess now and many people make a great fedora. Penman, advintage and even Johnson. Imagine the cost today if Johnson actually used the original block and fur. I would pay for that.

Well, this may interest you. I´m from Brazil, and in the 80´s (I think it was 1988) a company called "Chapéus Cury" ("Cury Hats"), from the city of Campinas (near São Paulo) claimed that they had supplied the hats for the first Indiana Jones movie. As a teen at the time, and a HUGE fan of "Raiders", I ordered a hat from them. I still have it, and it does look like Indy´s hat, but I never knew if there was any truth to the story. Could a hat made in Brazil have anything to do with Indiana Jones hat?

Hey, I´ve read the link in the description and, yes, Cury had something to do with the original hat after all: "Back in 1980, a Brazilian felt maker named "Cury" was supplying Herbert Johnson with a top quality rabbit felt which they used to make the fedoras for Raiders of the Lost Ark."
I'd say 2nd most popular and known. Charlie Chaplin's Bowler is as well known as his own movies nowadays. Indiana Jones is known for way more than the hat. Also, the hat style itself became enshrined as well for Laurel and Hardy.
I'm wearing my green fedora, Fedora, Not Alice, not Annie, not Casey but Fedora. I usually come to town in a battered old hat of brown. But it got red/green when me and my queen go steppin' around.
Look at Advintage hats. In my opinion, the best Indy hat currently available. I have one of their rabbit felt hats and it’s super floppy and light like the original Raiders hat would’ve been.
Stetson was supplying hats commercially at the time. Kind of like those officially licensed ones you can get now, and gave up that license some time before LC. I think Dorfman Pacific picked up that license during the time of LC. The hats in the film were still Herbert Johnson, which can even be seen in LC when his hat blows back to him on the cliff and you can see the liner.
I’ve talked to people that claim to be Harrison Ford but I don’t know if I’ll ever believe any of it until I can see him face-to-face I don’t know because there’s so many fakes
Indy's entire wardrobe is copied from Charlton Heston's in "the Secret of the Incas"! Not only that, but the booby traps in the South American native idol sequence of "Raiders" (the giant stone ball, the automatic arrow barrage, etc.) are lifted directly from one of cartoonist Carl Barks' "Uncle Scrooge" adventures! I guess Steven Spielberg and I read the same comics as kids.

This is very obviously the case, and I don’t think anyone is dense enough to think otherwise. Crystal Skull had over 48 brown hats alone to be used between Ford and stuntmen. But if you have the ability of observation, the hats maintain a particular look across the length of their respective film, and in most cases the hero version is what is commonly referenced. No one is under the impression that a single hat is used for the whole duration of filming.

Someone very astute already mentioned this (dammit) but yes, in RAIDERS Indy left his hat, whip and jacket on the Bantu Wind before swimming to the submarine. It's clear that the hat he wears after coming out of the Government Building to meet Marion at the end of RAIDERS is different and has a more greyish color to it. Highly doubtful he got his original gear back from the Bantu Wind so logically for LAST CRUSADE, all new gear. Just my two cents. But a well done video al the same!!
I agree, and that’s the opinion I hold. The jacket for Indy 5 has a hole in the left arm that’s been sewn up, insinuating that it’s still the same jacket from Raiders, which would’ve been on the Bantu Wind as well. And the whole crew seemed to respect him, so I feel they would’ve tried to return his gear. And the grey hat mentioned was also worn at the beginning of the movie when he heads out for Nepal. Just a casual, keep clean fedora.
Interesting, its been a long time since i watched all the Indiana Jones films together so i never really picked up the differences. The films did influence my taste in hats though, I have a wide brimmed fedora with a fitted crown (dont know if there is a technical term) because thats what i could afford. Its presumably sheep wool and the brim was folded with a plastic wire inserted to keep its shape. Ive fixed it a few times, but I'm not a hatmaker so the repair looks a bit shoddy, but i love it and wear it from summer to winter.
Here’s a conundrum. If Harrison Ford received the fedora in Raiders as it was handed to him without the “turn” put in, (Harrison would do that himself) Then wouldn’t the factory crease on the fedora show on the hat if Harrison re-creased it off-center?? Wouldn’t you see a faint crease mark from where it was originally? 🤨🤔
I’ve never noticed any sign of a factory crease. Although it is highly probable that once they settled on the hat model, they received fedoras open crowned and did the shaping themselves. That way the hat would’ve been turned on his head before ever having a crease put in it. We know from the brim orientation and where the bow sits above the ear that the hat was indeed turned on his head.
I never noticed any difference in Indy's hat at all. Toht's hat has always been my favourite. Ronald Lacey pulled off the fedora look better than any man I've ever seen.

Got myself a Herbert Johnson 'Cairo Poet' a little over a month ago. Made it a personal tax return present to myself and was so excited to put the order in. While I'll admit it IS a gorgeous hat, damn, do I ever have an e-mail trail detailing what an absolute nightmare this company was to deal with from there to here.
If you want to see where it really started you probably need to look at the movie Secret Of The Incas as that was apparently the movie Spielberg watched with the costume designer and said basically that is what he wanted Indy to look like. It's a different fedora but it was the inspiration for the entire look
Herbert Johnson themselves refer to the hat as their “Poet” style, so I’m more inclined to take their word for it. That being said, perhaps the fabled “Australian” style is simply no longer in production. And might I add that you rock the look, keep stylin’ brother
I have a large head and to have a RoTLA accurate hat, it would need to be custom made and I think would look ridiculously large. I ordered a replica Fedora, size xxxl, and made it look as much like the RoTLA as I could. Mine has the tight front pinch but not the height. I've worn my Indy costume to conventions and '80s parties.
I think it makes sense that the hat gets worn out and replaced by Indiana choosing the same or very similar hats. I myself have worn out 2 Stetsons and prefered to replace the hats with the exact same kind of stetson. If they weren't so expensive, I'd get 2 or 3 to have in reserve incase they discontinue it. That's just me though.
When I was in middle or elementary school in the 80’s I did a book report on the novelization of ROTLA. (Yes I was that kid) if I recall correctly, towards the end of the story there’s a conversation between Indy and Marion that takes place on the footsteps of the government building where Indy is upset that he lost I’m his “favorite hat”. And if you watch the screen at the end of the movie, they don’t talk about it but he’s wearing a different, newer grey hat.
Realistically speaking, that hat should've lasted only about ten years on his head without some form of degrading, considering what Indie's gone through. He wore it every single day while travelling the world while getting dirty and wet. It would've worn out and begun to lose it's shape and it's pliability
