@@juice4545 I get what you mean, but parents who do that can diminish a person's confidence and self-esteem, it's pretty demotivating. You feel like thriving and do things when people keep telling others aloud that you're incapable? Some might consider that a drive but some people can't handle that. Especially in this girl's case. Plus, lying your scale on this show doesn't seem that impactful, there's been others that misinterpret the question and stand on the wrong spot anyway. The real meat of this show comes from their discussions. Just leave her be wherever she feels she wants to stand.

I knew a girl in high school i ended up being friends with her. She didnt talk diffrren tly and didnt have diminished mental capacity or anything, she just looked slightly differently. She always used to ask me to hang out outside of school, like personally, but i used to decline all the time and i would say a white.lie as to the reason. I hope she didnt think i didnt wanna get too close to her becausd she was slightly different or sonethibg, i actually declined because i was into drugs and other self harm and knew i wouldnt be any good for her outside of being an acquaintance. I always wonder how she is and what she ended up doing. It hurts me to think that maybe she did thinm the exact thing i didnt want her to think.

In my school we had a special section for people with Down syndrome and disabilities. But there was one girl I met when I was little that didn’t seem like she had any mental capacity issues. She just looked different. She was actually in charge of watching over her younger siblings since they had a big family. She was quiet, but fully functional in every other way.

23:23 PAPA! I have had the same exact fear / sentiment for YEARS! It's a bizarre fear, it's like a conspiracy theory of yourself. I've always wondered if all my friends are just being nice to me, and treat me "normal". That everyone thinks what I'm saying is profound because they think it's cute. That my parents have never told me I have autism or a serious intellectual disability because they didn't want to hurt my feelings. Obviously, I know it's very silly but it's funny how some people think this. Most people I have met that wonder this ironically seem like people with a higher IQ than average / are deep thinkers, which I find quite funny. I'm glad someone else has thought the same thing before. It's a wild idea but funny to think about.

It says more about what their parents actually think of them, imo & your coworker needs to toughen up and dish it back to them. Crying will only make them tease him more. It’s just a known flaw in human character.

Just to play devils advocate, and for the record I wholeheartedly agree with all your points regarding that girl and her interaction with her mom, with that being said, in a space filled with by the looks of it, higher functioning and successful individuals with down syndrome, it is important to display the other side of things. To show that all people with down syndrome aren't the same and they all have their own unique abilities and talents, just like neurotypical people do. Though I believe the mom went about this the wrong way, it is good to recognize that its okay to not be entirely self sufficient, and its always acceptable to get help in agrees of struggle, so long as you are doing your best to accomplish what you can.

So many interesting topics here, I’ve been involved in the “ *End the R word campaign*” since 2010 ish. When I went to the first rally for work, and hearing the kids share their stories was heartbreaking. The word doesn’t just hurt people with DS as well. On the topic of should non disabled date developmentally disabled isn’t a clear cut topic. Sadly the most cases I’ve seen of this has mostly been an aggressive overbearing/abusive person dating them as a way to be able to take advantage of them, it’s heartbreaking to see, but just like everyone else if your deemed able to consent there isn’t a whole lot one can do.

The kids I worked with, and saw them work hard and put together this campaign and travel around to speak about the impact the word has had on their lives touched me. Just as a human with emotions that cares about the well-being of others, especially those deemed more vulnerable in our society. These kids had varying levels of developmental disabilities/physical disabilities. The campaign had nothing to do with politics or political office.

@23:80 My sister is on the spectrum and I have these things scheduled out for her because she NEEDS it. It's not that she has to do it or there is a higher level of expectation rather that's where the difference lies. IE: My sister has to wash her clothes every Saturday and she has to do it within 2 hours of starting. Unlike most of us who can go weeks, like papa gut described, we have that little thing in the back of our minds that says "Hey, you're procrastinating you gotta do that laundry.." Some may think "But will be forced to because eventually they will run out of clothes.." In my sister's case, that isn't how her brain works. If she runs out of cloths, she'll put on the dirty clothes she has on. Why 2 hours, otherwise she will start it saturday and finish it on sunday, leaving her laundry to sit overnight. Again, this is something that isn't that strange because all of us have done that one point but we understand that what we are putting on is dirty with the little voice, again saying "You REALLY gotta do laundry.." If I allow it, she will NEVER think of washing her clothes and forever spot treat any little things that may fall on it. Also you can't "just allow it for fun". The mother is being filmed and likely has some sort of conservatership and if her daughter just stands on the line that say "I strongly agree I can take care of myself"; she sets herself up for ALL kinds of legal trouble. To anyone in this care taker position, if you know you know. They are regular people but not, they need assistance like how some of us need glasses. Also something NEVER discussed, is the dark side of it, something that people willing never address. If one is to understand they are just like normal regular people, then keep in mind how often there are assholes mixed in there. Source: Taking care of my sister since I was 18 and her 16, and would still wouldn't change it but it has NOT always been rainbows and sunshine.

Papa, I absolutely adore you and your wife. I always find your honesty so refreshing, especially since you don’t give a fuck how people will react. I just have one comment about parents who have adult children with disabilities, and that is it’s very difficult for the family members in question sometimes. I’m a behavioral health tech, like your wife, and I see it all the time with families who have a member with a serious mental illness. Rarely do people offer empathy to the family, as oftentimes the compassion is solely given to the individual with the illness. A lot of the time the parent thinks they are doing the best thing for their family member by placing them in a group home, not to mention they may not be able to care for the member on their own. It’s very draining, too, no matter how much you love your family member with the disability. I just had to point it out, although I agree the mother from the video was quite overbearing. I’m referring to other parents in the same kind of position.

But she knows how she feels. And she can tell how other people feel. Recently we found a fun game called "things" which is kind of like apples to apples and you have to know the personalities of the people you play with. My sister with learning disabilities is great at that game! It's hard for her to communicate but she knows what people are like. All that to say, this one girl, may not know how to communicate the idea "I need help taking care of myself but I don't know how to say that without embarrassing myself so I just don't want to talk about it". But through all that she understands EMBARRASSMENT. And what happens with her mom? HER MOM EMBARRASSES HER. FUUUUU

I do say it as an insult, as I think it’s no worse or better than stupid, moron, idiot, etc. But those who use it when referencing people with mental disabilities should absolutely consider changing their vocabulary

Believe it or not that's how most people perceive disabled people. You just don't normally say that they are unnecessary because you know better because they are people with feelings but doesn't stop that from being the case however

I want to know why they always do “Do [insert attention grabbing thing] think the same?” Like what’s the point of always doing the same thing with slight changes? Also they’re literally profiting off of people with Down syndrome and other disorders they use. When the mom moved grace she looked so fucking proud of herself after grace said thank you. I already know that wasn’t a grateful thank you. It was a “I fucking hate you for this” kind of thank you

Maybe a hot take on the topic of the R word. I use it but never towards or around a person with down syndrome. I personally dont see issue with it until you use it to put someone down based on the fact they have down syndrome or a learning disability.

I know I could’ve looked it up first, but I just wanna say I have no idea if this is actually true. When I was in high school, one of my teachers told the class that in the state of California(where I’m from and went to school), if you find out your baby is going to have Down syndrome, California will pay for you to have an abort***. I always thought it was kinda strange the way she talked about it because it felt like an advertisement.

Is it really that hard for people to treat people with disabilities like people, I’m not an expert and can’t pretend to understand the experience, but if someone has a communication or intellectual disorder, they’re still a ducking person ffs

My issue is unlike the n word which was intentionally used to degrade minorities the r word "retardation" was a medical term now done away with because we assholes bastardized it,while I won't use any offensive slur and most assuredly not towards that specific type of person look it's pretty much too ingrained if my friend screws up I'm gonna take the piss out of him like I do agree words should be done away with(by social standards not corporations) it just feels like speech is being heavily policed and frankly I just like saying ret@$!%& just my opinion it's just a matter of having tough skin and realizing that it's just a word and if someone calls you it they're just a loser.

TBH, I think the R-word should stay. It rolls off the tongue too well, just like the word fuck. It's the link to mentally handicapped people that should end. The r-word should be used for people who could know better but choose to be ignorant, not for those who can't help it.

I don’t agree with the other guy the in video that we should ban the r word. Half of the time it’s not used for people with disabilities so idk what’s the point of banning it. Even other people with disabilities use amongst each other, are we going to jail them for it? I understand he may feel uncomfortable with it, but you can’t legally punish someone for saying the r word.

Probably a hot take here, but I feel like saying retard isn’t harmful as long as you aren’t saying it to or around disabled people. I understand that you could strawman this exact argument for other slurs, but the vast majority of people using the word are probably just calling their friends the word.

I think the r slur isn't bad if you say in a way that you mean stupid but if you say it to a person with a mental disability or use it in a way to make fun of those people your a pretty awful person

_Some Person Wrote About How The Mom That Moved The Girl Wasn't In The Wrong Bc "You Aren't Supposed To Lie Or It Defeats The Purpose"...So For Any & All That Share That Same Mentality In Regards To That Mom Bullying Her Child By Publicly Humiliating Her; This Comment Is Also For You:_ Defeats The Purpose? It Defeats The Purpose When Another Person *MOVES* Her. The Title Is *'Do All People With Down Syndrome THINK The Same?'* If She *THINKS* She Can Take Care Of Herself Then *THAT* Is The Point. Here's The Thing; I Guarantee You *MOST* People Would Allow Someone Take Care Of Them If They Were Provided That Opportunity To Have Someone Else Help Them With Majority Of Things & Honestly; I'm Sure If That Parent Were To Take The Time Teaching Her Daughter To Be Self-Sufficient & Worked With Teaching Her To Prepare Her Bath Etc. Then She *COULD* Take Care Of Herself, She Has Just Grown *COMFORTABLE* With Her Mom Doing So. I Don't Believe She Lied.
