The most hilariously unrealistic video game weapons? 

As a proud wielder of the gun-hammer I regret that I cannot make out a single word you're saying. I need to to speak louder, my years of practice with the gun-hammer have taken their toll on my eardrums.

I accepted long ago that all Monster Hunters have super strength and bodies made of steel.

The hunters aren't genetically enhanced, or have any magic, they just don't give a fuck. It's never explained how they manage to do any of this shit, they evidently aren't particularly strong seeing as they struggle to carry canon balls and get tired out and need a rest after running for 10 seconds, but they can swing these giant weapons easily because they just don't have the capacity of fucks to give. Also, they do lose stance after most strikes, and they do get dragged around a lot, but that's ok because these people hunt giant dragons casually for a living. So they stopped giving a shit about personal safety aaaages ago :P Also there are balistas and crossboss etc, but fuck that shit. "Why would I approach it?" BECAUSE I HAVE WAY TOO MUCH TESTOSTERONE.

If the characters in this game are strong enough to carry these weapons, they probably don't need them. They could probably just punch a dragon to death.

The thing about the weapons being too big or heavy to control effectively is actually something of a gameplay mechanic, as senseless as that sounds. It makes attacking very risky because, as you mentioned, it throws you off your stance. Thus you have to choose your strikes carefully and time them just right so you don't get killed as soon as your sword hits the ground. (Yes, your sword actually does hit the ground.)

The only thing that makes sense discussing the Monster Hunter series is of how badass it is. Badass monsters? Check Badass armor? Check Badass weapons? Check Badass gameplay? Double check. Heck, make it triple check. I'm not driving.

Of course Monster Hunter is completely unrealistic and abandons any notion of being realistic. When you make a rare steak your character complains but praises the sun when you make a well-done steak? I mean, for fuck's sake!

the monsters are... somewhat realistic, as they have somewhat logical explanations to what they're doing. there are some exceptions of course, but for the most part, the monsters are grounded in reality, despite them being fairly large. you can't say the same for the weapons.

I still love the series, but I can definitely see where you're coming from. I mean, I use the greatsword when I play, and I'd be lying if I said I never thought about how impossibly HUGE those damn things.

Thats monster hunter. The one who has tremendus strength, able to swing a sword double its mass. Oh! And do not forget that if you roll at the right momment. You will recieve no damage. Even if you roll towards a fireball. Well, who cares as long as its cool right.

Now I want a video on the most Realistic medieval weapons in video games. Dark Souls and Demon's Souls (not counting DSII) weapon range tends to be realistic for example, until you get to the more boss-related special weapons. Arguably Demon's Souls has the most realistic weapon range out of the two, with the exception of a few weapons.

In regards to hunters, they can also fall great distances and take no damage. I think there is some sort of enhancement or "special training" that takes place with hunters that makes them inherently badass. It should also be noted that a hunter's signature weapon is their carving knife while all other weapons come down to the preference of the hunter - it is never a case of "bigger is better." Also, basically all weapons are are made from the monsters themselves, the same with armor. These are the materials they work with with iron/ steel weapons being "shit tier." Of course it's all very unrealistic, but god damn, is it fun.

Technically the gun hammer is just a hammer that deals fire damage. It doesn't fire like a gunlance which is a whole weapon class by itself, just like hammers. Gunlance is a weapon class, all gunlances fire projectiles. Hammer is a wepon class, no projectiles. Gun hammer is a specific weapon that deals fire damage. Just to clear up any confusion.

I feel like the better question is "What would be the realistic effective weapons in monsterhunter?" I couple of the sword&shields, lances, a handful of the bows, maybe the more ingame-exotic bowguns that instead use gunpowder, possibly some of the longsword and dualswords. Honestly, I like to think that the world of Monsterhunter has... like, a third the gravity, if not less. Somehow. Because Duramboros can 'fly' for a long time

I had to laugh when you said that swinging a huge weapon around would realistically result in just hitting the ground, or the enemy dodging out of the way, because... that's actually something that I spent a lot of time doing when I first picked up a monster hunter game. Obviously it's nowhere near as much of a problem as it would be in a more realistic situation, but a lot of the weapons do handle very slowly, and getting used to that and predicting enemy movements is part of the game.

As someone who used to use 12 pound sledgehammers regularly for work, heavy tools and weapons can be swung safely while maintaining a strong stance, but the proper form to do so is completely different from swinging something lighter. When swinging a large sledgehammer, the key is to move your entire body, especially your hips, opposite to the motion of the sledgehammer. The other key is to let it swing back around behind you without touching the ground to keep the gravitational potential energy of the weapon in the system, which would be difficult with some of those longer weapons, but I believe that it could be possible if the user trained enough to get the form down, which would probably involve swinging the weight of their upper body out to the side opposite the side of the weapon. This would leave the user defenseless for a predictable amount of time in between hits, but that might be okay if they are primarily fighting large and predictable monsters. Missing a big swing, however, would almost definitely break your stance in a potentially dangerous way. If you trained with this in mind, however, you might be able to get around this by getting really good at quickly driving your weapon into the ground to get rid of its kinetic energy and then immediately jumping back with the weapon to recover your stance at a safer distance. Anyone using these techniques would probably have to be stronger than the average modern person, but not superhuman by a long shot. Most people could train to use a 10 pound or heavier weapon competently within a year or so if they put the work in.

(Well, you just grab a monster and hit other monsters with it.)

This is one of those games that you just have to leave your brain somewhere else to have fun with it.

Clearly, hunters are provided with excellent medical coverage and are looking for an early pension. It's the only explanation.

Might as well check out Dragon's Dogma then. Pretty much the midpoint between MH and something like Demon's Souls regarding gameplay. The overall design is rather tame and much more on the realism side of the balance though there's still a fair amount of oversized swords because _FUCK YEAH!_, that's why.

In short, best game. Every one go play it, sometimes the last thing you need in a game is realism.

B-But... you didn't even talk about the Hunting Horn... You can charge into a bullfight with a 10-ton dragon, smash it in the face with the heavy end of an oversized electric guitar, then switch grips and let off a bitchin' bass solo that buffs/heals your entire hunting party... And this didn't even get mentioned... ;_;

I would love to see you react to RWBY

Hey Skallagrim I have an idea for a new take on this matter, what about judging how effective the hunters are using these weapons and how realistic the physics are? Viewing the moves and combos of all the melee weapons (like in Arekzgaming or Gaijinhunter tutorials) and say how effective/realistic are considering that you HAVE to use those weapons. I suggest the idea since you mention things like getting dragged by the swing of a massive weapon or not been able to hit anything with it, well in the games, the Great Sword does exactly that, so you have to time your attacks in order to actually be effective with it. I hope you see this message and consider to do something with it, your videos are amazing and I found them pretty entertaining and educational.

I don't care what he says, that Giant sick ass hammer revolver thing is great. I mean would I use it in a fight?...Yes. Yes I super would. Nobody gonna pick a fight against that thing.

I feel like you missed an important characteristic of hunters that's only really evident if you know the dragon war lore, so I can't blame you, but hunters are the descendants of superhuman soldiers that fought the elder dragons to a standstill in a long past war. They retain most of the raw power and finesse their ancestors gained from this war with the dragons and so can safely wield and use the weapons in the game.

Well they actually have some weird lore defending this standpoint of oversized, apparently they are descendants of some sort of super human, though im not too sure about details, i know that they thought it was bs, and put that in there for the specific reason.

4:55 Happens very often in Monster Hunter games. It's part of the strategy xD Every attack leaves you open and you have to time it with the movement/actions of the monsters. If you have a 3DS get MH4U. If a Wii U, MH3U is good enough xD

The weapons in rwby would not survive. Alsmot everything is also a gun. Rwby's sythe is also sniper rifle. Yang has shotgun gauntlets. Wie's raiper is probably the closest thing to realism. The only thing it does have is a revilver cylinder with vials of dust in them (you'd understand if you watch the show). Blake's katana folds into a pistol and has a line attached to it which also allows it to be used as a grappling hook. The list goes on.

I just always assume that they are in fact just that strong use them effectively. That does make them frighteningly powerful, but also remember that Monster Hunters are not fighting trained enemy soldiers, they're fighting powerful animals. They're techniques and strategies would obviously be different then a soldiers. For instance their weapons are likely more concerned with having the force and impact required to cut or bash through thick hide and dense muscle of a creature that can be the size of a small castle rather then the speed to slip through an enemies guard. A normal sword would be a little more then a metal splinter to such a beast. The momentum of their weapons is outright stated to be a major part of why they're so oversized and rather then keeping a stance of any sort they use the forces of the swings to keep mobile; rolling, dodging and just generally never being in the same place for long. So the fact that their huge weapons throw them around is a ADVANTAGE and actually part of their strategy not a detriment. Also if you were a Monster Hunter a dragon COULDN'T break your spine with a lazy tail swipe. You could get hit by a beast the size of a building and shrug it off. They are, officially, just that damn tough and anything you see them survive in game is supposedly something they could actually survive and keep on fighting. That includes fireballs, lightning bolts, and two hundred ton dragons landing on them. I don't know what they're bones are made of, but they are obviously NOT normal human beings.

So I played a Warlock in a tabletop game called Anima: Beyond Fantasy. When I reached a certain level and had essentially unlimited time and resources, I decided to craft a bunch of powerful artifacts for future heroes to one day use. Among the gear sets I designed, was a pair of lion-shaped cannons, worn on the fists. Now this weapon was so powerful, that to use it in close combat would almost certainly kill the person using it, even by the rules of the game, so in came the other piece of that set; the armour. The armour was a sentient piece of equipment with the ability to resurrect its wearer the moment they died (up to three times in a day).
