He is wholesomely ripping off Jontron and he could make original content but he just wants to ride the tailcoats of other successful you-tubers even though you just dissed XQC for this. If you look at John tron’s original Are you afraid of the dark video and you look at the meat canyon video the first few words are almost completely identical, they both state that Are you afraid of the dark was the original goosebumps that you didnt know about. I really wish Hunter would go back to making original content.
@@azathoth7380 there's almost no way to tell the average audience what Are you Afraid of the Dark is without the comparison to the more popular franchise. Calm down
The "handful of chemicals" that they used to flare up the campfire is merely non-dairy creamer. Just as fun to do in real life, let me tell you. Also, The Tale of the Dark Music is probably the one that scared me the most as a kid. Gave me a fear of dolls and cellars for a long time. Or The Tale of Laughing in the Dark, because creepy stalker clowns.
@@newjojosupercutsandmore2489Its so strange, the tone and style of editing is so different as well as his humor style that I honestly can't see the comparison, used to be a huge jontron fan myself.
I mean, they were creepy episodes but I was also watching goosebumps too so they were about the same. The monkey paw was kind of creepy, but I think it was the dollhouse episode was creepier.
@@Larsgman Yeah, that was bad I think what made the dollhouse creepy is. They actually made a horror movie about a dollhouse and they referenced a dollhouse and so many horror movies.
The red bike episode is pretty spot on for what parenting was like in the early '90s. Have some major trauma? Watched your friend die and now you have PTSD? GET OVER IT.
@@the_real_mr_wolff What are you talking about? They're right. Mental health was NOT considered a serious thing by many people back then. People beat their kids in public ALL the time. I got spanked with my pants down in the supermarket more times than I can count and I saw it happen to other kids. My parents used to threaten to abandon me when I misbehaved. I was 5. My dad would drive me out to the middle of nowhere and leave me there. Just drive off. He'd come back after awhile and tell me to stop crying or he'd change his mind about coming back for me. It was a different time. Why do you think millenials are so into mental health awareness. Because we grew up with parents who did not consider things like trauma and depression "real". They still beat kids at public schools when I was a kid. So yes it was entirely normal to tell kids going through any kind of mental stress - even grief - to get over it. It is hilarious that you are assuming what is normal for a time you sound like you didn't live through. People only started considering the mental health of kids in particular when columbine happened. But it did not mean overnight change. People who talked about psychology and their kids feelings were considered as coddlers who spoiled their kids. It wasn't like this stuff was unknown. But the general public? It was not part of the zeitgeist and CERTAINLY not part of people's parenting plans.
this could easily be a episode of one the recent anthology series I mean King of Pigs was a movie all about this sorta stuff but in a school an is terrifying a child converts to kids to be a little nuts to protect themselves an gets murdered by one of them after he rethinks suicide @@commiecomrade2644
@@commiecomrade2644 as I said earlier, normal parents would not be taking part in most of what you are talking about. discipline is important, but from what you just said it sounds like your parents are not normal. trash parents will always exist, in any and every generation. sorry your childhood was rough I guess. I was spanked fairly frequently as a kid and it has had literally no effect on my mental state or relationship with my parents, besides making me think through what I'm doing and whether or not I should be doing it in the first place. one reason millennials are so obsessed with mental health is the fact they grew up with the internet, which allowed them in a much bigger way to self-diagnose and feel the need to be different somehow. not to discredit people with legitimate mental illness, but the idea that things such as anxiety and adhd are considered serious mental conditions is insane. it's a way of getting more people on meds and letting them pretend to be weird and quirky. there is a lot of this on TikTok for instance, where kids use the excuse of having DID to do cringe cosplays and rack up views and attention. another example is the whole genre of shit like "day in the life of a person with anxiety". some people are more anxious than others, but everybody gets anxious about something, and the concept of having to medicate everyone with poor control of their anxiety is truly dystopian. people need to learn to take control of themselves and be accountable. I would love to see some actual evidence of people talking to their kids being viewed as "coddling".
still is like that in terms of adult life: "oh, you have life-long PTSD? get a job and stop leeching off everyone else, we had worse and we worked" etc etc.. same people whenever something goes wrong for them: "please help me!".
Man I'd be down if this just became a mini-series where you watch random episodes of Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark? These are my favorite types of vids in the channel.
Man, the monster from Tale of the Dead Man's Float actually gave me nightmares for months and made me scared of pools for years. Actually terrified me.
The opening still gives me chills in my 30s today. It legit spooked me as a kid. There was actually an episode where you witness a child being hung but it got taken off tv
My grandma played the librarian in The Tale of the Quiet Librarian! My best friend told me that he was horrified by that episode as a kid... very funny finding that out.
The scariest episode BY FAR in my opinion, was the one where the girl is practicing witchcraft or trying to summon some demon monster using a spell book, but when she tries casting the spell to control or banish the creature, it fails and this demon thing slowly approaches her, grinning like a maniac. She dies (more child death right at the beginning), and it fast forwards like 100 years where a new girl does the exact same thing, but realizes the reason the other girl couldn’t banish the demon was because she was supposed to use a silver object as part of the spell, but used a steel spoon assuming silverware was actually all real silver. It’s just super creepy and the grinning monster still sticks out clear as day in my memory 30 years later
The pool ghost was absolutely terrifying for me when I was young. That core memory has stuck with me for so long. Seeing it again now though, I definitely made it scarier in my mind with my imaginative remembering. Could never remember where I saw it, so thanks for covering this one!
“Are You Afraid Of The Dark?” frightened me far more than Goosebumps could ever hope to. That intro had me clutching my blanket in terror…still get goosebumps from it😉. Plus the amount of 90s kids icons it had is legendary. Mike Flanagan’s Netflix show “Midnight Club” is based on the 1994 book series that drew inspiration by the Midnight Society in this show and the spooky stories they told, and was a key influence for Mike Flanagan’s work on the Netflix show as well, incorporating many similar tropes and overarching ideas used in “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?.” Mike Flanagan has even talked about how heavily the original 1990 series inspired his work on “Midnight Club” and his work in horror in general. If you haven’t seen “Midnight Club” but were a big fan of this show growing up, then I highly recommend you check it out. It has that Mike Flanagan flare and is more mature, making it enjoyable for both adults and teens. Although it’s truly criminal Netflix didn’t greenlight it for a 2nd season!!
Here to second the midnight club. Hunter should watch this if he wants the spirit of are you afraid of the dark but for an older audience. It’s like how you remember the childhood shows actually being.
@@MrSkeltal268 Exactly! It’s all of the nostalgia warm and fuzzies plus the added bonus of great acting, writing, and directing that you’re looking for as an adult.
I looove Midnight Club. It did remind me of the Midnight Society and how the kids would gather at midnight and tell spooky stories. I just love that concept. And I did get AYAOTD vibes at times. Felt a little nostalgic. But then again, I love anything Mike Flanagan puts out.
@@nrgbunni. i actually have no clue who or what that is? Sorry lol. I just grew up throughout the 90's-00's and looking back i realized just how willing certain things were willing to take risks & tell more mature stories. Most People just understood that these were forms of media, or video games, and if done right it actually gets certain life lessons across. (This is a very tame example) but a random example is, "The Rescuers" it is tame compared to many things back then but the animation team/writers/voice actors did an amazing job at conveying a story of an abused kidnapped child "in a kids movie. A Disney kids movie" it shows not just the anger from the older lady, but her manipulative sides. Where she breaks down the girls already damaged self esteem. It shows so many sides to that ladies dysfunctionally unstable behavior & personality in a very raw unfiltered type of way.. *Just that alone is something that no forms of media would be willing to do in the way that they did when i was growing up but oddly enough it's those stories that stuck with me the most. Even when you're older you can go back and watch these things and relate to these things. Just cause they called them kid's movies, didn't mean they wouldn't touch on difficult topics... That's what i wish we could get back in touch with nowadays because so much modern day stuff is not willing to even touch on difficult topics in any sort of relatable, conveying way.. it's really hard to explain the point that I'm trying to get across...
I loved this show as a kid, it was far better than Goosebumps! Every night I'd sit in the chair with my grandfather lying on the arm and we'd watch it together. Great times!!
I used to watch this at my grandparents house all the time (I practically lived there). Did you guys also watch the sci-fi channel? My grandma and I used to watch this and then after we’d watch tales from the crypt until I fell asleep. I miss those days so much. Oh and just remembered also the twilight zone!
The dichotomy between how I used to feel about these as a kid (actually kept me up at night) and now is hilarious, but Hunter's take on them is even more so. Loved this and the Goosebumps video. I love me some cheesy pastas since they often remind me of more refined & grotesque versions of these old shows I grew up with. It wouldn't surprise me if many pasta writers were inspired to get into horror by these classic productions. (lol "productions") That all being said, I CANNOT WAIT FOR CREEPCAST!!! MeatCanyon + Wendigoon * big fat sloppy chefs kiss*
As other comments said you should definitely make this a series and watch more episodes. The show did have some great ones, like the tale of the pinball wizard, dark music, the fire ghost, and badge. Those were really good.
The one with the girl who was starved to death in her room and her soul is stuck in the mirror was AMAZING, full stop. And the one with the like 4 year old kid whose ghost kept saying “I’m…cold…” because he was killed and the murderer put him somewhere cold (this is how my child brain remembers it, anyway, lol) was also wild. Lots of child death in AYAOTD 😂
@@caittailshave to agree with both of those as top tier eps, also the one with the vampire film in the theater was for some reason the one that gave me the cold sweats when I was like seven 😂
Yeah...Fire Ghost is the one I remember most... in the firehouse... but I also remember something about a cat that kills people...but that might actually have been goosebumps...
I grew up with both Are You Afraid of the Dark and Goosebumps. I was and still am a much bigger fan of Are You Afraid of the Dark. There’s a handful of really creepy episodes that easily top Goosebump’s creepiest episodes.
same here, and I always enjoyed Are You Afraid of the Dark way more. Goosebumps was campy and fun but AYAofD creeped me the fuck out as a kid and I loved that
Man that was the one that gave me nightmares. Nostalgia leads me to think the arcade or video game one was pretty cool too. Can't remember the name might have been pinball wizard or something like that.
When hunter said in the tale of dead man's float when he said 4 children are dead, that reminds me of that one minor student, k___ed 4 students/children.
Yes! I loved that one. And I cant remember the name but the one where the kid gets glasses from a weird magic shop and starts seeing like shadow people. Freaked me out as a kid lol
This show slapped a lot harder when I was 6. I don't think kids shows need to have a good production value. Especially horror. As long as it's relatable and hits all the prepubescent fears.
I grew up on this Canadian masterpiece and wondered at the time why the accents sounded weird with all the soory and aboot ..almost sounded like my Michigan accent. I digress “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” was a top 5 fav but I was raised on “Tales from the Crypt” and was Goosebumps fanatic..so this was tame but still so good. So much spooky nostalgia.
You guys picked some odd ones. The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner is entertaining. Always loved the Tale of the Night Shift as a kid (one aspect of that episode did not age well). The Dead Man's Float, very frightening as a kid, great monster design.
Anything involving creepy shit going on in the basement traumatized me. I basically watched all this crap in my deep dark basement with no windows on a tv from the 60's
The episode where the kid drowns in the pool traumatized me as a child I’m the oldest of my siblings after watching this I was terrified of pools for awhile and constantly worried about younger siblings for a couple years after that
It may be silly but every time I tell a spooky story among friends it’s hard not to start with “submitted for the approval for the midnight society” the nostalgia was strong and it was fun to watch you explore some of it
This show was definitely harder than Goosebumps. I always liked it more. The campfires in boy scouts were at least 10 times larger than the midnight society and we all had knives and spears. Searing the leaves on surrounding trees. Good times.
So glad I watched Creep Cast.... I was a fan of Wendigoon, and he introduced me to you!! I love your content, you two are definitely my fav youtubers atm
I’m really surprised this wasn’t mentioned in the video. The Dream Girl episode was the episode M. Night Shyamalan ripped off when he made The Sixth Sense. It was a straight up copypasta.
At age 35, I'm still creeped out by the bottoms of pools because of that pool monster. Ryan Gosling wasn't in The Tale of a Door Unlocked, but he IS in The Tale of Station 109.1, which is my favorite AYAotD episode because Gilbert Gottfried's in it.
I appreciate that PapaMeat knows his fans have considerable depth issues. Like SERIOUS depth issues, like the kind where you already sold your kidney, whored out your body and have two more days before Jimmy comes to collect. Thanks for helping us out with PDS Debt Papa Meat!
The podcast already has 58k subs and it's only been announced a day ago. And you know I subscribed and hit the bell. This podcast sounds like it's going to be great.
The way I immediately ran to the new podcast channel! I’m beyond thrilled. I have an hour and a half commute each way to work and I already know this’ll be my new favorite thing to listen to. Loved you on the Sardonicast episode!
Thank god you're dropping a pod. Nothing more than I want to hear Majestical Papa Meat speaking to us on topics we could only imagine! big W for the ads gotta keep the lights on somehow. P.S. are you afraid of the dark, goosebumps and tales from the crypt scared the living shit out of me.
Are You Afraid of the Dark, basically Goosebump but for Older Kids. No joke The Tale of the Deadman's Float made me scared of pools and even bath tubs for quite a while.
@@thefanwithoutaface8105I don’t even remember what happens in it I just remember that fucking blue goo smile. This show was really traumatizing a generation
The episode that stuck out to me the most was "The crimson clown." It was basically about a clown that would show up to psychologically torment bad kids until they turned good. Lol it was priceless.
I remember watching are you afraid of the dark as a kid and watching tale of the dead mans float and being absolutely terrified. I literally had to walk out of the room and sit somewhere else till my brothers and sister finished watching it
I was beginning to think im the only one who saw this i searched RU-vid for a while and barely saw any results which added to thr scariness, the one i remember the most was the one with the comic book that saw the future, that one really stayed with me for years
You should eventually check out and review some episodes of R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour The Series. Great show with actual scary twists and unsettling atmosphere.
Johnny, the main character in "Tale of the Dream Girl", is played by Fab Filippo. Who played Scott, very brief love interest of Buffy in season 2(3?) of BTVS.
Just got back from a 5 month deployment and catching up on all your vids. Thank you so much for your content man, best stuff I’ve seen since the Cumtown podcast
I watched this twice, once while absolutely high as fuck and this felt like a fever dream, and another time when I was sentient and could actually follow plotline
I’m so excited for the new podcast! I really enjoy your more obscure horror content and Wendigoon’s videos as well. I listen to almost exclusively podcasts while I’m working nightshift, so this one will definitely be added to my list :)
@@icy9308 Sure, most of the ones I like are comedy podcasts. My favorites lately are Chuckle Sandwich, Brain Leak, Cream Crew, and Just Roll With It (only the last one if you’re into nerdy D&D shit) If you want more of Meatcanyon’s stuff specifically, he has the one with the Flashgitz guys called “Cream Crew,” and one with Noel Miller called “Stretch and Fade” As for some with Wendigoon, he just started a podcast recently with MoistCr1tikal & Jackson from the “Official Podcast” called “Red Thread” where they’ll go over cryptids and creepy horror related things online PS: Meatcanyon has been on Chuckle Sandwich before, and Wendigoon has been on the Official Podcast twice, both being very good episodes. Hope this helps!
I loved Are you Afraid of the Dark! So much so when i found out what they used to change the color of the fire i had to do it too. They used sugar free kool-aid
'The Tale of the Super Specs' twist ending really messed with my psyche as a kid! First you get x-ray specs, then you start see dark figure from an alternative dimension coming closer and closer before the keeper of time decided you belong in limbo/purgatory.
Man, I don't know how many times I laughed during that Ted the Caver video the two of you did. It left me wanting more, and I'm relatively new to this type of material. Satan answered my prayers with a podcast!
I would love to see a follow up and maybe a ranking/comparison video after seeing more episodes. Goosebumps is good and campy. AYAOTD is more eerie and really dark at times. I remember being traumatized as a kid from one of the Zeebo the clown episodes. If i were to recommend some: Laughing in the Dark, frozen ghost, Crimson Clown, Pinball Wizard, Prom Queen, Midnight Madness, Many Faces, station 109.1, Night Shift, and Bookish Babysitter.
I'm looking forward to your podcats with Wendi! PS: I liked "Are you afraid of the dark" mostly because Goosbumps weren't airing on any channel that I had as a kid it was a dumb but a fun show. Though even as an early teen I prefered "Tales from the Crypt".
hey i wanna say i appreciate your videos my dad has cancer and your videos help me deal with it through these tuff times i love your content and keep it up!
Man I used to run to the TV after school to watch this show as a kid. I'd grab a flashlight, go into my parents room, and turn all the lights out pretending I was there lmfao. Also, you missed the best episodes other than "Dead Man's Float". You should review more! Suggestions being The Tale of- "Laughing in the Dark", "The Ghastly Grinner", "The Twisted Claw", "The Dangerous Soup", and "The Quicksilver". And "Badge", as a little bonus ;)
