The Most Important Molecule for Health You Have Never Heard Of: Nitric Oxide

What if I told you one single thing could work as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neurotransmitter, and vasodilator and that it helps promote memory and learning, increase arousal in both men and women, protect against sun damage and skin cancer, and regulate digestive enzymes and hormones? You’d want some of that, wouldn’t you? Well, nitric oxide is capable of all of this and more. Our bodies naturally produce this molecule but, due to lifestyle factors, some of us make more than others. Luckily for us, there are many things we can do to increase our nitric oxide levels and reap the health benefits.
Today I’m honored to sit down and talk with the man who actually discovered nitric oxide, Dr. Louis Ignarro. Dr. Ignarro is a medical research scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his breakthrough discovery of nitric oxide and how it positively impacts health and longevity. His groundbreaking research on nitric oxide paved the way for-among other innovations-Viagra. He is an award-winning Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has his Ph.D. in Pharmacology with over 35 years of experience teaching.

Amazing, these 2 together, I been following Dr Hyman since seeing him on PBS, He should be in charge of FDA and Department of Health for this country. He truly love helping people. By living a healthy lifestyle I avoided covid while everyone around who overweight,, ate poorly got it and had the shots. I avoided the shot. Good eating real food, cutting out sugar, walking and breathing in the noses, exhale threw the mouth, exercise daily. I'm 65, my friends that I were in daily contact were 28-50 would not listen. I hike with them and I'm always waiting for them, enjoying the view at the top. Thank you Dr Hyman ❤

You may have everything needed for a healthy, young, long life. But the basic question is when did we laugh aloud or when was the last time you looked at the future with hope and joy? Humanity hasn't been healed yet rather it got only worser. Corrupt regimes, the fear of what's after Pandemic, Govts like North Korea, PCR and some Muslim nations who still keep their people as slaves and the ever growing poverty in the African countries and the threat of Nukes and AI hanging over our heads like sword of Damocles, how do we prioritise our needs. Totally appreciate the video and the humble Scientist talking new knowledge about health without any personal agenda like a story teller. and enjoyed the enthusiasm of the Podcaster which sure is contagious. This is my perspective from a larger point of view. Please take no offence on what I expressed. In India we see people dying without oxygen, hospital beds and fighting over vaccines.

I do a lot of hiking, climbing, ski mountaineering, and back country skiing at high altitude. I breathe in through my nose until I can't supply enough air through my nose alone, then start using my mouth in addition to my nose. I breathe out through my nose when not highly exerted, then breathe out through my mouth while restricting the air flow, when highly exerted, creating an increased pressure in my lungs simulating a lower elevation. You increase the partial pressure of oxygen in your lungs. At high altitude, the oxygen molecules are further apart (less dense air) and the pressure to push the oxygen into your lungs is lower. I was taught this when about 6 years old (1965). I've lived at 8,000' nearly my whole life, playing at up to over 14,000'.

Fascinating and timely conversation. One suggestion for Dr. Hyman -- please edit the RU-vid transcription. RU-vid's auto-transcription gets about 90% of the words right, but it misses nearly all the medical, pharmacological, and scientific terminology, the proper names, and the uncommon words that would make it comprehensible as well as translatable into other languages. Previously, RU-vid allowed viewers to correct video transcriptions, but removed this capability so only the content producer can do this. Viewers who are hard of hearing or who aren't native English speakers, as well as anyone who'd like to read more about this research, will thank you.

I take two capsules each morning total $2 of the most powerful antioxidant in history. They each have the antioxidant power of 20,000 glasses of organic carrot juice. Been doing that for 20 years. Now I find out the antioxidants increase nitric oxide which is similar effect of Viagra without the side effects and high price. I'm a senior and in perfect health and my hair is still black and the only one in my family of 5 siblings who doesn't need reading glasses or any medication. I've studied alternative health for 30 years for my own benefit and because I find it more interesting that staying ignorant and eating the wrong foods and then having doctors prescribe drugs with side effects. That's one way that ignorance isn't bliss.

According so some research Dr. Sarah Hallberg described, eating saturated fat lowers the level of saturated fat in the blood stream. A mechanistic explanation of cholesterol and atherosclerosis is that it is a structural component of plaque, that is being deposited in a certain location to repair damage, and is not causing the damage. The damage that needs repair is the bulging out of the artery wall due to the intimal hyperplasia. The normal expansion of cells at the intima media junction has, for some reason, accelerated drastically, and this bulge into the blood stream could cause blockage of the artery. This makes a lot more sense than thinking the elevated cholesterol is just sticking to the artery wall, for some reason. Lots of people with low cholesterol have died of artery blockage so this is not the explanation of root cause.

delightful interview. agreed. His mic, as we say where I used to sing, is extremely "hot", giving his sound an old fashioned radio show sound which is cool, but it almost makes his voice appear disembodied from his person and it's also picking up every incidental mouth sound and noise... His "hot mic" sound is also so disparate or different from the guest's. Fortunately, the host is a delight, the guest is a delight, and the content is both intriguing and important.

you can buy nitro-glycerine spray ( nitric oxide -a breakdown product of nitro-glycerine) at the pharmacy if you need a hit.

so, do you think that the Nitro -glycerine pills my Dad and Great Aunt took when they felt short of breath helped them instantly create NO? as these pills changed their response quickly and all of young kids thought it was placebo effect.....Wish that would have come up in their discussion

Dr Hymans’s microphone is way too compressed. All the lip smacking, snotty nose sounds, throat sounds, make this excellent & informative video hard to watch and enjoy. 🫤

I think NO also might play a role in GERD in some people. The lower esophageal sphincter is smooth muscle as well and I noticed that when I started eating kale with every meal and having dark chocolate my Gerd got so bad it was as if the LES wasn't working at all (no hiatal hernia either). I think there are some studies out there that discuss NO role in GERD

@@nebojsa1976 not necessarily, but there are some studies out there that cover NO's role in relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter muscle ... The true root cause of GERD

I was listening to this in a rear room. I went the kitchen for food and I heard something like a man heaving breathing and I freaked out thinking some dude had snuck into my house. Forgetting about that I went to my bathroom and heard the same Darth Vader sound in the bedroom. Then I realized that it was Dr. Hyman snorting through the mic constantly.

Tobacco smoking increases nitric oxide. Most super-centenarians are/were life-long smokers. So, it's very possible that the increased nitric oxide produced by their tobacco smoking contributed to their good health and longevity.

yes, but remember that was then and this is now. Tobacco is no longer tobacco and hasn't been for decades. Look at all the additives. Roll your own from organic tobacco, or better yet just breath like smokers do when they are smoking....without the cigarette
