If you know some Simple and Basic Music Theory but you know it well, then you can use that to understand most harmony and find a lot of great sounds for your solos. I think you will be surprised just how far you can go and how much you can do with a few really basic things, but you do need to work on the right things.

This video is a very good reference point for music theory. I've come across many guitarists who think "theory" is a dirty word, but in all walks of life knowledge of the theoretical foundations of activities is essential, and having that knowledge allows one to innovate and experiment.

There are countless ways one can define or identify a truly great teacher; for me, one of the most impactful attributes a genuinely great teacher has is the ability to make the subject fully accessible and understandable to anyone. That, in a nutshell, is Jens. As a novice, any little nugget of fundamental music knowledge and application I can hold onto is enormously beneficial to me, and I always get such gold from Jens. @@JensLarsen It's very impressive. Apart from the good info, I love the playfulness as well. Now while we as viewers have speed control dials and should use them, I would tentatively suggest to set the overall speed just slightly slower. Just a tad lower. Maybe 90% of the current speed or something? I found myself having to pause a few times to read stuff on the screen (while there was also audio info in the form of your commentary) to make sure I did not miss things. Overall though, looks great.

Long comment Jens. This lesson is as succinct and clear a compilation for useful music theory application on the guitar I've seen to date. Wonderful lesson Jens. It really ties the instrument, music theory and the concept of improvisation, on the guitar, together in one straightforward, easy to understand lesson. Just one suggestion in the rational/justification for the usefulness of music theory study for guitarists. It facilitates better communication (and respect) with other instrumentalists who are generally very well versed in this area. This lesson elevates the study of the guitar to its rightful place. Thank you for your ongoing work on behalf of our beloved instrument.
@JensLarsen

Thanks Larry! I agree that it is useful to be able to communicate with others, but it is not that strong an argument since most of the people watching are not in a position to play with others (or not at a level). So that is why I don't include that aspect.

Mann you talk fast! There is so much information in this video that it blows my mind. You explained things I have wondered about for years as far as what music theory really is and what it does or can do for a fledgling musician. I took music theory in college 50 years ago and it confused me so much that I never followed up on it to learn application. You just summarized the whole class in 5 minutes. I’m going to watch this video many, many times to get everything out of it and finally start to apply theory to my music. Thanks Jens. I watch a lot of your videos and have your roadmap course. It's the lucidity when talking about notes and getting them straight to the fretboard what is not so easy to achieve. That requires systematic workout of some kind which I would like to access in the shape of a set of well defined and progressive exercises.

Play scales and scale exercises slowly while saying the notes. Build that up in complexity. It isn't difficult, but by actively using what you know you get it into your system

@startrooper2earth

I like your build up of why using music theory. I wondered though (see your "finding more arpeggios and stacking the Cmaj scale in thirds") why you are stacking 12 notes? Is this arbritary or with a specific reason? If a 4 note chord (7th) chord is maximum, 11 is enough. May be it is mosquito sifting but I wondered.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 2 года назад
At that point in the video I am not trying to build a single chord, I am writing out the scale so that it is easier to see what is available and how it is related to the chord that is being played (in this case G7) If you write out only a few notes then you don't have that overview. Does that help explain it?
@startrooper2earth
@startrooper2earth 2 года назад
@@JensLarsen So if I understand it correctly it is an arbitrary number. I find it difficult to instantly know and naming all notes of a chord (and order like in inverse chords). So learning the stacking order in thirds on all 12 major scales inside out as mnemonic may solve this. It's all in the knowledge of the fretboard. Thx. for your response!

I can give u an advise, so u dont have to think:"oh hell, how am i supposed to do all that and where should i even begin?!" if u want to learn all the chords in all keys and all notes in all keys, dont go on to it like:"oh hell, i gotta learn all the names and crap" music is based on logic. so u can do it easily. learn this what jens said here: C E G D F A E G B etc. and when u know that, learn 6 keys. A B C# D E F# G# B C# D# E F# G# A# C D E F G A B C D E F G# A B C# D E F# G# A B C# D# E F G A Bb C D E F G A B C D E F# G after u know that, learn the circle of fifths, how build up scales with # and b : F# C# G# D# A# E# B# Bb Eb Ab Db Gb Cb Fb now you learn how to change your 6 keys into a different key: just put an imaginary "b" in front or a"#" and u will see it by urself. i dont want to write so much... but u get the point. then u learnt how to transpose everything in either a # or b key. after u did that, u know I ii iii IV V vi vii° chords to all keys and dont have to think:"whats the V chord in the key of Eb?" U just know it that its B, because its always with the alphabet and by knowing the circle of fifths, u could conclude it easily. After that u just need to learn to play everything u learnt in one key on ur instrument, for instant guitar. u ask urself probably:"whats that supposed to mean?" Take the key of C for example and learn all the inversions and notes (scales) and chordshapes of one key and learn to know it by heart on the neck. A Capo helps a lot at times with that, because u have to be clear to know the chord combinations if u have to play a C as an A shape chord. when u did that, u are ready to play everything, because u know now the connection why the G major shape is on the 3rd fret and why the G major on the 10th fret is an A major shape. And then u will more and more understand why playing arpeggios is so important and how everything is connected and u will get to hear music in a different way as before. anyways, hope u get all that and u will get somewhere with it. and if i helped anyone else, im glad i helped. music and math are acctually the same thing. just logic. and u have to find ur own way to solve the problem in a simple way and thats why we have so many ways to slove things and play things easy but also the hard way. u just gotta find ur own way of getting to the conclusion. but to appreciate music in its whole, u have to understand the concept of it and how its build. just like math. start learning the basics and u will be ready to understand jazz and classical music. thanks for reading and have a great day either way if i didnt help at all :)

@@JensLarsen Yes, the way you teach is the way to do it .. I get so annoyed when I see people trying to teach guitar that tell people put this finger behind this fret on this string for every note.. and it takes an hour just to explain an 8 bar melody.. it’s totally ridiculous. The way to teach is to define by derivation and explaining how to manage and expand their own journey… in other words teach them how to figure out things for themselves. They’re going to have to study and develop skills and experience on their own anyway, so handholding, and totally avoiding the language that explains music doesn’t work well. The other thing I like that you say is apply the scale theory to making actual music .. many people tell you to either study scales all day and all night on one extreme and then there are those that say throw at the scales completely and just learn these patterns that make the sounds that you want. I mean there’s so many different shades of stupidity, it’s incredible. In the end, it’s all about context and understanding what the game of music is really all about. One complication though is that the priority levels of need to know theoretical concepts varies depending on genre and instrument function. But it is my firm belief that knowing other things that other musicians know that you don’t necessarily need to know is helpful and insightful regardless.
