The Most Intriguing Buy-A-Ride Moments in NASCAR History

Throughout NASCAR's 7 decade history, BIG MONEY has been a driving force for the now billion dollar industry it is today. That's why you see pay drivers come and go quite often. However, NASCAR ridebuying is also a necessary evil for the cup series, XFINITY, and trucks. When a bigger team or high profile sponsor misses the race, instead of going home the combination may choose to shop the garage. In that case, a smaller ride with no sponsorship is typically transformed in a ride to salvage driver's points and sponsor contracts. So with that, it's time to look at the most intriguing NASCAR buy-a-ride moments in series history.

Ok...bare with me. As a hauler driver for Front row Motorsports, at the time, I can recall SEVERAL times we sold our ride. One of particular note ended up with THREE drivers changing seats, and two cars rewrapped to make everybody happy. It was Talladega. Somebody else can research and figure what year it was. I dragged Her mie Saddler's Car into the track. Frontrow #34? After Q, Bobby Hamilton Jr.(32) was shopping for a car To keep the Tide Sponsorship alive. When the dust settled, Our car was wrapped as the Arrons Dream Machine with Mike Skinner driving...Bobby ended up in Mike's car, wrapped as the Tide Ride(because Bobby had to honor a contract with Cheverolet) and Hermie got to watch the race in the motorhome. I departed the track In my Frontrow Hauler With the Original Tide Ride in the wagon. Did this a couple times with Bobby. Maybe a couple times for Robby Gordon, as well.

Fall Talladega, 2005. I’m almost certain that’s the race you’re talking about. Yep, found it discussed on the broadcast. Full race is on RU-vid (2005 UAW-Ford 500) and the relevant portion about Hamilton Jr, Skinner, and Hermie is at 13:38 of that video.

Paul Menard was better than just buying a ride but he was what would be in baseball terms a quad A player
@calebgoodman8729
@calebgoodman8729 4 года назад
True, but he also drove 14 years combined for either DEI/RCR/WB, and there's no chance of that happening if he didn't come with his own sponsorship
@gabepollock1641

Menard was unique. He was never going to be a year in year out championship contender on the level of a guy like prime Tony Stewart or Jimmie Johnson, but he wasn’t completely terrible. He kept cars clean and showed flashes of brilliance at certain tracks, and the Menards money helped teams he drove for develop their programs further. All things considered, Menard was a solid hand.

What about the time when Joe Nemechek DNQ’d for the 1997 Daytona 500? He bought Phil Barkdoll’s #73 and Joe’s sponsor (Bellsouth) came along for the 39th annual Great American Race. He was part of the big one during the closing laps of the 1997 Daytona 500. So yeah, Joe Nemechek (a Sabco driver) bought a ride to race in the 1997 Daytona 500

In the 1989 Daytona 500, Kyle Petty jumped into Eddie and Don Bierschwale's car after 3 laps to drive in Eddie's place but Eddie still got the finishing money, that was an intriguing one as Kyle raced for virtually nothing. But he didn't mind, he just wanted to race and get Peak Antifreeze in the race. He did get the Bierschwales a top 10 in the 500 though so it was a good day. In the 1992 Daytona 500, A.J. Foyt bought out the Oldsmobile that the Bierschwales owned after he crashed his primary in practice and put 14 and Copenhagen colors on the side and finished 22nd with it. Those are a couple of interesting ones.

What's even crazier about DW 2000's season is that Jimmy Spencer, DW's teammate, was somewhat competitive in the same equipment.

DW was effectively driving for the former David Blair team, which had been the remnants of Junior Johnson's #27 team. The cars he was driving were at least 2 or 3 years old. He was fighting with one arm tied to his back. In 1998 he showed what he could do in a well-prepared car (#1 Pennzoil car for DEI).

In the 1996 spring Atlanta race, Roush tried buying David Blair's #27 car since Jeff Burton's new #99 team had DNQed without previous year's owners points, and the current year's owner's points hadn't kicked in, yet. Blair's team refused to sell, but went part-time later that season and over the next season since they didn't have a full-time sponsor. I wonder if they had sold that spot if they would have caught a foothold and hung around in the sport longer.
@TheLocalLt

Another video could be “shocking DNQ’s where they didn’t buy a ride”, which could include Roush’s disastrous fall off a cliff in 2014-15, including having Trevor Bayne and Ricky Stenhouse each DNQ in 2014.

Waltrip’s 2006 ride was not owned and fielded by Bawel (Jasper Engines), it was a Bill Davis Racing ride, Waltrip’s 55 was teammates with Dave Blaney in the 22. The new 55 ride had no points, so they bought Penske’s 77 points from the year before, which were officially still owned by Bawel despite his teams closure in 2003, as Jasper provided engine services for Penske. However Bawel was a paper owner with this operation, “Waltrip-Jasper Racing” was not a team it was basically just the points arrangement. The ride had nothing to do with Penske or Jasper (who continued as a partner with Penske even during the Waltrip venture), and was purely a Bill Davis Racing effort, like Blaney’s it had no Dodge support or logos as Davis was running Toyotas in trucks and both he and Waltrip were getting ready to field Toyotas in Cup the following year. Waltrip actually did this exact same arrangement at his own team the following year, when he bought Cal Wells’ PPI points (the 32 Tide Ride), and listed Wells as the owner for David Reutimann the entire 2007 season, with a similar “Waltrip-PPI Racing” title applied like with the Bawel deal.

Ron Fellows at Watkins Glen in the 2000 CTS race. Brake pedal broke on his #87 truck during qualifying, so NEMCO bought out the Conley Racing #7 truck starting in the back, and he still drove the thing to a 3rd place finish. Impressive since he hadn’t taken a lap in the truck before the race.

I disagree with the Jeff Green comment. The 10 has sponsorship for all 33 races. The 38 doesnt. Jeff Green's only chance to run full races is with sponsorship. And the sponsorship that Jeff has is for the plate races. And Kaulig had to ruin Jeff's chance to compete at Daytona cause they didnt build their car right like they should.

Charlotte is where the most teams reside at. Smaller teams could even bring a car in on a regular trailer and not a full semi hauler. So it's usually the race track that has the most teams show up and has the most qualifiers besides the daytona 500. More likely that this scenario plays out with an underdog getting in while a veteran gets beat out in qualifying
