My number one question is HOW DOES THIS MAN REMEMBER/PLAY ALL OF THESE RPG'S. Huge fan, have been on his channel for about a year or two now. Keep up the great work Eric!!!
The reason that the RPG elements of Tombs & Treasures feel so tacked on, is because they literally WERE. The original computer version of the game wasn't even an RPG, but purely a menu-driven point-and-click adventure game, with no combat whatsoever. The superfluous RPG battles were entirely the addition of Compile for the Famicom/NES port, with little if any input from Falcom themselves.
Dark Wizard. The memories... I almost forgot about it. This was the game that got me into the strategy RPGs. This lead to me other great games of this genre such as Ogre Battle March of the Black Queen on SNES, and Mystaria and Dragon Force on Sega Saturn.
Yeah. It think they fall into that weird are of, "does it count as an RPG?". A lot of action/adventure games fall in that category. Granted, on system like N64 and the OG XBox, JRPGs are very limited so leniency is given to some games on whether they count as an RPG. I have them both for the same reason. I want to eventually collect as many RPGs as I can and I'm always keen of less known/obscure titles. Since I didn't play them and wasn't sure if they were RPGs, I grabbed them anyway:P
ohmygod. seeing the medabots one brought back so much nostalgia. I played Medabots: Metabee & Rokusho it was fun because you can random parts from enemies you beat but it was sO frustrating because a huge part in battles was dodging but it was rng. I wanted this one mermaid set so bad but the enemy was so hard to beat and I would literally cry out of frustration. I wanna play it again lmao
Great list - I've purchased three of these (Ogre Battle 64 on the Wii U, Opoona and Legasista) and played others on emulators. Another obscure and highly underrated JRPG for the Wii is Eldar Saga, which I'm currently playing.
7:02 Unpopular opinion but I looove Asdivine Hearts I beat the game 3 times. The battle system aren't that deep, & the story isn't the best but I found all the main characters are charming in my eyes especially Zack / Sol in JP ver. (Definitely will always be on MY top 10 protagonist list ever) & now I still half through the way on beating the game once again on Switch (sorry for my bad English)
I'm curious about these Kemco RPGs and I might try Asdivine soon. Are there any others you enjoy? I read comments about them and it seems like players have varied opinions.
So far my favorite from Kemco are only Asdivine Hearts (for the characters & story), and Asdivine Cross (mainly because new game+ replayability). As for modern Kemco games almost all of them are *pretty much* Asdivine Hearts' clone in terms of the overall systems with some slightly added more content & "kinda heavy" IAP gacha (though you can grind but it takes a hell lot of times) which makes modern Kemco's RPGs feels generic and kinda bland (almost feels like they don't even tried anymore) sorry for my all over the place English
looking for an old certain game. I remember it just similar to ninja gaiden or castleveinia in term of gameplay. The game have a stage that is when you reach to a certain map you will see the whole background of the map is black. the entire map have lot of giant iron bar maybe the color of the iron bar is white. It's like a giant prison because behind the those iron bar is the princess stuck and imprison behind the bar. when you reach at the end of that prison map you will see princess behind the bar and a boss ready to fight you. I don't remember if defeat the boss will rescue the princess behind those giant iron bar. the princess size is just as big as the character player control. Anyone of think of?
Thank you! Most of these look interesting, like Opoona. I knew some by title, but still have to check them out. Eternal Eyes has such generic and unrelated cover art, that I'd never guess it's a cute RPG that looks like Ragnarok Online. I wasn't aware of its existence and your description made me think of Azure Dreams for some reason. I wanna play it now. Saludos, amigo
Warriors of the lost empire is fun on psp. And you can get it for cheap usually. If you into those kind of action RPGs then I’d recommend it. It’s enjoyable
Amazing list for sure with some really obscure stuff! I do believe MISTOVER was never released on the Xbox however. Tons of indies on it though, including SOULVARS so there's stuff to choose from.
I remember getting my butt kicked a lot by Robotrek. The bosses hold nothing back and it's hard to heal your robots enough to keep up. Funnily enough the robots are kept in round capsules that look similar to Poke Balls years before Pokemon came out.
Ogre Battle 64 is still my favorite N64 title, such a fantastic game in everyway. Such a rare game to find a cartridge copy too. Ive been wanting to play t again for ages but i can never seem to find a rom that works well enough to be able to play through the entire game. Tried many different rom files and many different emulators, and it sucks cuz it is such a great game!
I'm not sure Ogre Battle fits here. There aren't many N64 rpgs, and the pedigree of this one makes it fairly well known in that company, IMO. I'd certainly call it less obscure than something like Aidyn Chronicles The First Mage
Huh, you're right. I didn't know that. He chose non-Japanese "JRPGs" elsewhere in the video (for the original Xbox, and yes there's at least one properly Japanese game he could have chosen for that spot,) but still, fair point @@fuzzylogic3017
For Dreamcast, I don’t think Time Stalkers was Obscure. It was a sequel to a fairly popular Genesis game. Elemental Gimmick Gear, Record of Lodoss War, or Silver were way more obscure.
I love and hate Dokapon. I had mastered the game, I had a weapon and a shield both with a rez effect on them so I could reset battles without actually dying since it auto saves on true death, all to tackle the infinite depths of the New Land dungeon after beating the game. I passed floor 1000 over the course of years while using the game as a sleep aid. There is nothing more just endless dungeon. I gave the game away after the save got corrupted lol.
@@toumabyakuya there’s a bunch of videos on Super Robot Wars and having like 30 games in the series makes it not obscure. I didn’t realize that a successful franchise could be call obscure, but I can always be proven wrong that people can think that way.
@@thomasffrench3639 *"there’s a bunch of videos on Super Robot Wars"* Barely any of them either were made by a famous youtuber (and so, their views aren't necessarily that high) or have that big of a viewcount. *"and having like 30 games in the series"* But you must remember that very few of them were localized to begin with. Is only in the last few years that they have been consistently localized. *"I didn’t realize that a successful franchise could be call obscure,"* I mean, that's what happens when you have a franchise that rarely comes out of Japan.
