@@danolantern6030 Tardigrades do just fine against enemies their own size, their unique abilities let them survive dry seasons and long-term exposure to solar radiation (the real reason for their radiation resistance), and their reproductive rate more than makes up for getting killed by predators thousands of times bigger than them. They're solid, just small. If TZ had a general rule that "tiny is bad" then it would be one thing, but he had no issue putting ants and beetles into S-tier despite the fact that birds, reptiles and mammals eat them by the millions.
Also about its eyes: They have trinocular vision in each eye, meaning there are three seperate sections that all see separately in each eye. I'd imagine this helps with 3d vision but again, a little overkill. Oh and by the way, from what I remember they can barely see a foot away from them and it gets blurry. However, my source for that is a link replying to a reddit post that now doesn't work because the community is private and I couldn't find any other sources so ye
Most animals can barely see a foot in front of them. It's pretty much just reptiles, amphibians, primates, carnivorans, and ungulates that have good vision lol. Of course it's not ALWAYS like that but usually that's how it is from what I know.
The mantis shrimp and pistol shrimp are so overrated, I got so angry when I realised that the pistol shrimps blast doesn’t really do anything. I heard it was as powerful as a bullet and got so excited thinking “wow nature is metal” and then I realised it only stretches 5mm out from the claw and has nowhere near the same power as a bullet. Two frauds. I just hope the bombardier beetle isn’t a fraud too.
Indeed, got hardness (difficulty scratching) in exchange for toughness (difficulty breaking) you cant scratch it with basically nothing but can shatter it with a hammer
Also no one will EVER be able to punch an unpowered object into Earth's orbit from Earth's surface because any trajectory will either be an escape one or intersect said surface again
In Superhuman by WeirdWorld the main character have the power to change his body and use DNA from different animals to fight. He uses the mantis shrimp punch as one of his main attacks, the power break his arm every time he uses even with his superhuman body. He only can sustain later when he gets more powerful.
Are there really people out there that act like it's some overpowered king of the ocean that can beat things outside of its weight class, though? I think they're just really flashy and cool.
I've known that the idea that mantis shrimps have magic forbidden color powers was wrong for a bit but Ive had trouble explaining it to people and didnt entirely parse it myself. your explanation made a lot of sense!
always remember that the application of force very much matters as much as the amount of it I can't punch diamond into powder with my bare hands but all it takes is a pair of pliers and... yeah I've broken many diamonds in my lifetime. sometimes on purpose
They do have the highest mobility and manipulator limb efficiency for almost any aquatic arthropod, as well as very interesting eyes. But they're absolutely tiny and have abysmal power within their environment, being small animals that live in holes.
The main thing that annoys me is how it's sometimes glorified as an "absolute crab killer". I've seen a video where the title goes in the line of "mAntIS sHriMP kiLlS GiANT Craps!" when pretty much all the crabs where smaller than the shrimp. Like, a good sized blue crab could probably tear one apart, or atleast critically injure it. Not that i have anything against feeding crabs to mantis shrimp, it's just how overestimated the shrimp sometimes is.
Sonic boom is unfair yeah its a cavitation bubble, but its still cool I also make it clear that they have more cones of colored light doesnt mean can comprehend more colors lol 3:03 Hehe get double **Insects can be considered crustaceans unless you use crustaceans as a paraphyletic group I did not know they could see polarization thats cool, that what makes it so dragonflies think some glass is water and lay there eggs in bad places..... CIRCULARLY POLARIZED??
I'll be honest given that I actually haven't heard that much about the mantis shrimp before this video, after watching it I'm convinced that they are kinda cool
Some other things that went unmentioned is that they have three seperate segments in each eye, so each eye can see in 3d on its own. They're also not shrimp by most definitions, which is pretty fun to say that peacock mantis shrimp are not peacock, mantis, or shrimp
I was going to try to explain circularly polarized light, but then realized that I don’t actually understand it well enough to give a good explanation… Ok, thinking about it, I think it is kinda like this: We have an electric field vector which depends on time (and also position, but let’s consider it only at one position). This value of this vector oscillates as a wave in the plane perpendicular to the direction the light is traveling. Horizontally polarized is when the vector is always horizontal, and vertically polarized is when the vector is always vertical. You can also have diagonally polarized when it always is along the same diagonal line. Circularly polarized is when, instead of oscillating along one line (with the magnetic field oscillating along the line perpendicular to it), it oscillates in a circular pattern, Like, E(t) = (cos( (freq) * t) , sine( (freq) * t), 0) (When the light is traveling in the (0,0,1) direction )
I mean the shrimp typically live in burrows don’t they? so if threatened they force the predator into a bad spot. Also THANK YOU! People act like chimps will slaughter any human but a strong healthy person could definitely fend one off with some severe injuries. And this is coming from a person who hates seeing people glaze with it fighting skills.
Yeah, that's why the Shrimps really aren't preyed on that often, they're very successful. But redditors think "successful" means "it can beat up anything else"
@@rowandunning6877 they are the single species that has had the most effect on the earth, by far (most other groups like that are way more than 1 species) but yeah even so people treat ourselves as wayy more important than we are
You're wrong. This video is wrong. Cite better sources. What empowers you to defame such a majestic creature? You better not let me catch you around your dorms or it's OVER for you.
your "red" color receptors aren't sensitive to what we would call red light, they're sensitive to yellow. Google SML cone frequencies, you can see the one labelled "red" actually peaks in what we would call yellow-orange.
Here’s the fact there is another shrimp. That claw is so powerful that it makes for a single second a bubble that is hotter than the sun. It is called the pistol shrimp
From what ive seen a big section of the general public, mostly from the internet, seem to hate them and call them useless, and thus id say theyre overhated theyre just adapted to an environment that was widely open it not like they could've evolved to expect us
the nerd emoji doesn't make your comment any less insufferable. it's a goofy biology video for people who like goofy biology videos. Don't like it? Move on. I thought it was funny.
