This is the road to the most powerful two stroke (relative to cc) ever. Aiming for 30+hp from 50cc.
Lofty goal!
Here's a few key points:
- 100% bore width single exhaust port, no bridges, non. This leads to unrivaled blowdown specific time area.
- What should be excellent transfer duct geometry, large radius on inner walls to minimize flow separation, constant side wall angles for control, large duct volume for gentle "delivery"
- Valveless tuned length intake with nitromethanol injection, aimed at the transfer inlets.
- Ridiculous crankcase volume, no piston pumping here, it's all about resonance!
- Tuned pipe, tuned crankcase, tuned intake, tuned everything, resonance!
To be able to run such an monstrosity of an exhaust port without instant catastrophic failure there's a special two-piece piston with a retained piston ring(thanks Mark Atkinson). It has no holes in the skirt either, no short circuiting between the transfers and the exhaust.
I've designed the whole thing from scratch.
3D printed, cast(lost PLA), and "Nikasil" plated the cylinder myself in my garage. Designed the case and pipe for it. I've received lots of help from the community with things I haven't been able to do myself(lack of machinery and/or skill)
Especially machining, until recently I didn't even own a lathe.
Thank you guys, you're the best!
I've designed and built a landspeed bike for the engine, plan is to set a new class record at Bonneville.
Thanks for following the adventure, and fear not, I've already got plans for the next project - Symmetric transfers, four exhaust ports, two rotary valves(but not where you think they'll be), forced induction, no need for expansion chamber(!) ++
Many years of two stroke madness up ahead!
Easy is not worth anything

Your getting there, but uhm, when the piston leaks, you won't get any good case pressure. My engine runs great with 0.6m clearance, but it has 2 rings, I'll bet when you have the right piston rings it Wil fire up, Oh try to inject a little bit of brake cleaner to start it 🤗

maybe a total seal type ring will do the trick. Or two thin rings with the gaps set 180 apart.

I had done 2 rings with the gaps set 180 apart , went from around 10bar ( don't remember exact number ) , to around 14bar compression , that was on my old Honda CBR125R single cylinder engine , I have no idea how it ran on 95gas ( but would try to go for 98 if the station had it ) and it gained noticeable low end torque and survived for more than 10k km and was sold still running strong , might be a good idea maybe

It dieseled when hot, even when running 4 Star leaded 99 RON petrol. With the ignition off the bike would idle until the carb emptied of fuel. In 1986 it was stopped for speeding, after my friend overtook an unmarked cop car on a dual carriageway. The court summons stated that it was clocked at between 98 & 104 MPH for over 3 miles VASCAR. My friend had the summons framed in his living room as it stated that the bike responsible was a CZ 125 Sport. He was banned for a year. We measured a best fuel economy (??) of 27 MPG. (Stock is 65 MPG). The sprocket ratio was upped from OEM 14:52 to 19:52, which meant that the bike had to be doing at least 75 MPH in 3rd gear to transition into 4th (top) gear as there was a flat spot in the rev range at 73 MPH in 4th gear due to the porting and expansion chamber interaction (Serval expansion pipe).

The rings between a piston cylinder (system) "evolved" in the beginning of the twentieth century, so that in order for the ring to expand (and seal) it was by way from the "air pressure" and the act of compression. All this fine line of finicky futility and distinction, is so advantageous in hopes that Your cylinder doesn't get scored from having a piston ring Our snowmobiles had the ring "pinned"* at the gap (within the groove so that the ring could not ever rotate around (and catch on any of the "large" ports) * This pin was like a teeny tiny roll pin that all fit within the piston groove

I feel your pain, I had a number of problems with my barrels trying to get them to start and finally worked out why but that's what happens when you try to do something different but the disappointment and all the feelings of futility soon disappear when it finally fires up. Also, are you using sg for the ring? (spheroidal graphite). If you are then you need to use the higher hardness material and it needs heat treatment. I use sg in my liners of 600/3 grade which is easy to machine but the second hardest grade available and is ideal for liners giving good durability. The hardest grade of 700/2 would probably be the best for piston rings. A lot of quality rings are sg but obviously they thinner you go the more brittle they become which is why all the thin rings are heat treated cold drawn wire. Keep going, you're almost there. And your name's Pip. Pip. I knew I had seen it previously but unfortunately I don't have much of a memory. It's on your barrel. 🤣 🤣 🤣 Regards, Bob.

@bobmonkhouse50

By the way, you have a lathe so it's not beyond your capabilites to make your own rings, sg/Durabar is available in different diameters and isn't expensive and I'm sure a man of your talents can do basic heat treatment, also try en24, it's a steel that should be hard enough and durable enough to make rings from without heat treatment

I agree, it might be a good plan to learn to make your own rings, since Mark is the wrong side of a decent sized ocean! It would also allow for a little experimentation. once you've got the tooling/process figured out, they're pretty easy to make, and as long as you work methodically they'll be pretty consistent. I've only ever made rings for larger, slower engines so your results may vary! Glad to see her together and turning over, she'll be growling soon!

Impressive work so far buddy just going by the sound it was making it sounds like it is not drawing through the primary carb? Either there is a crank case leak or maybe the crank case volume is just to big now as the transfer ducts are very big now and a 40mm bore is not going to move a lot of gas, I think I’d do a crank case compression test next. But the ring wear is concerning Keep at it!
@2STROKESTUFFING

The engine was based on a gas weed eater engine and used a very primitive home made fuel injection system we made out of copper piping and springs. Worked pretty well. You might have to use a one-way bearing for the drill starter because I did the same thing with the ratchet substituting for a one way bearing. I was trying to start a 30.5cc small bore engine and it failed. Believe it or not it’s not spinning free enough like a one-way bearing it sounds like it’s about to start but it didn’t! Then Eventually the ratchet mechanism inside failed inside! I put the one-way bearing set up on there and it started right up the ratchet causes too much drag and take the natural combustion cycle out of rhythm Preventing it from starting because that small bore doesn’t produce enough torque to compensate for any drag! It’s different from starting a lawnmower with a drill I think the piston is so much bigger and produces a lot more torque so it will compensate for any drag that a drill that has a Ratchet end or as you have seen with a straight drill with no mechanism for starting just a socket and extension.

Another note: it's common in the auto racing industry to gas port the compression ring,. So, just as the final compression is happening, it forces the ring to expand with gasses from behind. This allows you to use softer rings that ease drag, but still seal tight during combustion. Basically just small hole(s) from the piston crown to the inside of the ring land.

Many 2 stroke rings are steel, Steel and nodular iron rings are about twice as stiff for a given dimension as grey cast iron. Steel rings need a plating to run on cast iron bores., no idea if that is needed for nikasil. You are probably doing this but when welding in a lathe put the ground clamp on the part or chuck to avoid passing current through the bearings. Low compression is probably the ring. Inspect the edges of the ring and the chamfer for teltale marks. To increase ring pressure you could try putting one of those old school expanders behind the ring, some 60's and 70s two strokes had them behind number 2 ring.
@johngalt97
@johngalt97 4 года назад
Nikasil bores use unplated rings. One, either the bore or ring surface, has to be the 'wear' surface that gets seated to the other. I discovered this when converting the top end of a KE100 to iron cylinder.

Where was your TIG ground?! You can't let current go through bearings. The tiny contact area will destroy them!

@2STROKESTUFFING 4 года назад
Was on the "right side", heat might have screwed things. And that ratchet was crap too... I'll buy another of the pre-made ones.
@Bakafish
@Bakafish 4 года назад
Let me explain. Our friend was using his lathe to align the ratchet and weld up the socket to it. Electrical welding requires a very high current circuit to be established, so a ground path back to the welder is required. If you put the grounding clamp somewhere on the lathe itself, that current will (at least partially) flow through the chuck, then bridge across the bearing surfaces. Since the whole idea of bearings is to minimize contact, and they are riding on a thin layer of grease, what happens is that the current will end up arcing across those tiny interface points. This of course can result in horrific localized damage to the bearings. The ground needed to be positioned to prevent such a thing from happening, but his tight shot didn't reveal to my eyes the clamp anywhere I would have hoped to see it.
@Bakafish
@Bakafish 4 года назад
@@2STROKESTUFFING Wasn't (too) worried about the ratchet. I give you props for that brutal decapitation :-) What I'm concerned about was the lathe. I saw some good how-to's on rotary welding tables that clued me in to the danger of grounding through bearings. Hope yours are safe!

I’m very excited because I’m also designing/building a bit more roadworthy engine and it came to my mind that you are using an exhaust port with a very high surface area. That big exhaust port, at low rpm and at starting, can completely cancel the trapping efficiency. So the fact that you say that the engine has low compression may be for that also because the final ring gap is way to acceptable and should anyway start. So you should calculate the compression ratio with the Japanese method and if it is way too low you should try to block the exhaust port with a very little diameter exhaust. If you have any technical question, you’re welcome
@2STROKESTUFFING

118 race fuel and not enough compression? try squirting some fuel down the intake, get your air gun from the compressor, turn the engine over and give the carb a puff of air to prime the casing and get things moving in the right direction, it will create a little pressure in the casing to allow more transfer port flow, I bet it would fire up then. I had a Goped many years ago, got it used with a modified unknown engine (free, neighbor threw it in the bin). The pull start recoil gave up when trying to start it, so tried a cordless drill and no dice. Went and grabbed a true electric drill motor (3000rpm) and it fired the engine right up. The benefit of using electric drill motor vs cordless is there's no chuck clutch (for the hand chuck) on most of them since they come with a keyed chuck - so it eliminates the need for a one way starter adapter since the engine will run faster than the drill motor once it's running. Also, it won't rip your wrist apart if it back fires.

I wouldn’t make the gasket so big as in wide, it’s to great a surface area to compress, hence the possibility that it will not start, due to an air leak, try without a gasket, and use gasket weld that you can buy in a tube. This will prove my point Wright or wrong, then buy a stock gasket with a cooper collar/ring, this will compress, and then use high tensile steel bolts for added Tork, I wish like many others to be there helping you, keep it up and best wishes, Tip: when tapping the holes, clamp your work on a pillar drill bench, using the core drill to center up the hole, replace core drill for tapping tool, and use cutting oil, turn and feed the chuck by hand use a chuck key if you need to, and the thread will be center true and square, which leads to less resistance, plus you can buy three step ones so you cut out three times Making for a more genital cut, and healthier thread. That you can get a bit more tork too.
