This is the road to the most powerful two stroke (relative to cc) ever. Aiming for 30+hp from 50cc.
Lofty goal!
Here's a few key points:
- 100% bore width single exhaust port, no bridges, non. This leads to unrivaled blowdown specific time area.
- What should be excellent transfer duct geometry, large radius on inner walls to minimize flow separation, constant side wall angles for control, large duct volume for gentle "delivery"
- Valveless tuned length intake with nitromethanol injection, aimed at the transfer inlets.
- Ridiculous crankcase volume, no piston pumping here, it's all about resonance!
- Tuned pipe, tuned crankcase, tuned intake, tuned everything, resonance!
To be able to run such an monstrosity of an exhaust port without instant catastrophic failure there's a special two-piece piston with a retained piston ring(thanks Mark Atkinson). It has no holes in the skirt either, no short circuiting between the transfers and the exhaust.
I've designed the whole thing from scratch.
3D printed, cast(lost PLA), and "Nikasil" plated the cylinder myself in my garage. Designed the case and pipe for it. I've received lots of help from the community with things I haven't been able to do myself(lack of machinery and/or skill)
Especially machining, until recently I didn't even own a lathe.
Thank you guys, you're the best!
I've designed and built a landspeed bike for the engine, plan is to set a new class record at Bonneville.
Thanks for following the adventure, and fear not, I've already got plans for the next project - Symmetric transfers, four exhaust ports, two rotary valves(but not where you think they'll be), forced induction, no need for expansion chamber(!) ++
Many years of two stroke madness up ahead!
Easy is not worth anything

Realize that I forgot half of what I was going to explain in this vid. The pipe, the piston, port timing, simulation software ++ Have to make a script or something. Anyways, already started on the next vid, different carb, see if I can find some softer reeds, maybe stuffing the case for testing ++
@jjhack3r
@jjhack3r 3 года назад
It was probably running strangely because of the massive crankcase volume. If you get an expansion chamber on there, it will probably run a lot better. Edit: lol I didn't realize you mentioned stuffing. That could definitely help with testing the weird piston setup.
@Ozsmallbore
@Ozsmallbore 3 года назад
Good idea stuffing the case for now. The large case volume and low primary compression will make it hard to start, have you considered running a longer intake on the primary carb to get a bit of ram effect to help with starting and low rpm running?

@Josh Frank Idk, it's rewarding having done things like that yourself and I think that's why he has done it that way. But it's also clear that it is only a prototype engine so I don't think a professional coating would be necessary until he fine tunes the design.

Way back when I was playing with 50cc 2T we usually threw out the stock ring & machined our own out of meenite (don't know how to spell it but it sounds like that) it has better wear properties & would hold its shape better on lean runs. That was back in the '70's though so there's probably better metals to use now. At an absolute push, you could machine one from cast iron. That's what some engines from the 50's used as rings.
@olivierroy1301
@olivierroy1301 3 года назад
Hi, I think he could use cast iron. The reason is it doesn't have to be super exotic, only dissimilar from the cylinder material. Also cast iron is easy to work with. Now that I think about the causes it wear... I would consider three things, pre-tention of the ring, finish of cylinder and lubrication. Then I would do a test to see if the ring continues to wear or if it only lost material while it just set in place. Then If it stays the same, take in consideration the initial wear when gaping the ring. Congrats for your first start!

I think the biggest problem there is the cylinder. Because transfers have a very large cubic volume. The cubication of transfers cannot be to much greater than the total cc. All this together with a very large crankcase causes little fuel air mixture to pass into the combustion chamber. This leads to the piston having to pump more to send the correct amount for a good compression. Try to block the 2 big transfers and leave only the small ones. Best regards, continues with the development of the project.

I have long wanted a Quattrini small frame racing engine for a Vespa which are insanely powerful 2 strokes and a darling of the German scooter scene. Their cylinders look somewhat like yours on the water cooled ones. I have in my large frame MK1 Vespa T5, an LML Xpress engine bought direct from India which has a power output equalling the Vespa P200 engine but also some grunt as it was designed to propel LML scooter and 2 adults and children around the streets of India and is an awesome hillclimber. Its not just the reed valve and slightly bigger carb that aids the power but LML's "half brick" heavy duty coil and a modernised CDi unit that creates a much brighter spark than a standard Ducati etc from Vespa's. OK I thrash out at 75mph but I get there bloody quick and I could by changing teeth on primary's give me quicker accel/less top end or slow accel/higher top end which is the beauty of them engines :)

about the hardchrome coating in the cylinder , sumting i seen done on kreidler breitwand cilinders that is grooved beyond repair they bored out the cilinder and got a good cilinder from a older forced aircooled kreidler , these have realy small ports and not too big ribs , they chuck that cilinder in a lathe and wittle it down untill just the cilinder is left with about 4mm wall thickness , then they open up the ports to fit the breitwand and press that cilinder in the breitwand cilinder , mahle cilinders are about the best cilinders when it comes to the hardchrome coating

>Revised< The ring material should be ductile iron. The face of the ring should have a slight radius, or about a 3.00 inch radius or 72.6mm. also the face of the ring should have shallow groove about .005 of an inch or 0.127mm x .030 of an inch or 0.762mm wide in order to spray a plasma coating The plasma is created by spraying an alloyed powder containing Chromium, Molybdenum, and Nickel into the groove The plasma molly application produces a somewhat porous yet hard, wear-resistant surface that retains oil and improves lubrication while also reducing friction the ring thickness should be about .040 inches or 1mm. There should be a small chamfer about .015 of an inch or .381mm on the top face inside corner towards the piston the bottom face towards the piston just break the edge. The top and bottom faces should be very flat and with a very good finish lapping would be a good way to achieve this. The piston ring land should also have a very flat upper and lower land with a very good finish, and should be machined with very sharp high rake carbide tooling. Clearance between the land and the ring should be between .0015 and .002 of an inch or .0381/.0508mm. the radial piston to ring clearance should be between .010 to .014 of an inch or .2540/.3556mm these clearances cause the ring to trap combustion gases behind the ring to force it outward against the cylinder wall for better sealing. the ring should be able to move freely in the ring groove with no binding or sticky spots. The ring end gap should be .001 inch per inch of bore size or .0254mm per 25.4mm. the ring should be machined such that outward radial force is enough to keep the ring in contact with the cylinder bore a way to measure this rig up a pull scale a small round thin plate slightly smaller than the bore with a hole dead center run a string up through the plate and attach it to the scale as to pull the ring up through the bore take note of the scale reading it should be about a ¼ pound or 113 grams. All the features of the above described ring are all extremely important in order to seal to the piston and bore if any are over looked the ring will fail to seal in very short order the plasma molly is the only thing you could do without and still make out okay, it just won’t last as long. One last thing you’ll need to bridge the exhaust port so as to not snag the ring. Hope this helps good luck
