Yes. Nobody knows what type of work ethic person has. Simmons James comparison is actually ok. If Simmons would like basketball, he could have been James level player!
the Donovan Mitchell-Norman Powell comparison really wasn’t crazy at all at the time and i’m not sure why you’re so perplexed by it. Powell was raw offensively but was looked at for his defensive potential as a smaller SG which is exactly what Mitchell was coming out of college. Nobody expected him to hit the ground running the way he did.
I dont agree at all with the Norman Powell/Donovan Mitchell. I think that's actually a great comparison for the expectations of Mitchell coming out. Also their size and playstyles are very similar. No one expected Mitchell to be a legitimate star coming out of Louisville
To be fair. The Donovan Mitchell comparison isn’t that far off. I get the “at this point Powell was a scrub” point. But looking at it now there games are pretty similar. One is just way better
No one expect mitchell to come in and be the immediate on ball presence he was as a rookie as well as be a constant pull up threat from deep. His game was thought to be more catch, shoot and cut with maybe some more skills coming later but he was WAY ahead of schedule with his development.
In all fairmess some of these comparisons are actually somewhat accurate if you consider the way the players play, its just that one of the 2 players in the comparison was much much better at those things. Bargnani did play like a poor man's Dirk and Dame has the same playstyle as Bayless a million times better. It's similar to how people now say that Alperen Sengun plays like Jokic, their levels are not even comparable but the styles are
Idk the Norman Powell - Donovan Mitchell comparison makes a lot of sense to me. Obviously Donovan became a lot better but there's several similarities to be made there
Unpopular opinion: An 18/8/8, 7 ft, DPOY candidate, PG quality handle, Lebronesque athlecticism rookie is indeed a generational talent. He's just not a guard but it doesnt really matter since he's mentally broken now
The wade marcus smart one really isn't bad at all. They have VERY similar physical tools (6'4" with a very plus wingspan), had similar jumpshots coming into the league, and both had a mix of scoring and distribution coming out of college. Wade just happened to be maybe a top 3 athlete ever in the nba at the guard position when he came in the league, and Marcus smart was not. However they didn't say that smart would be as good as wade, just that they profiled similarly. It's really not a crazy comparison.
to be fair I do think Bargnani compares quite well to Dirk if you account for playstyle at the time. His overall skill level just could not match that of Dirks
I’ve said this for awhile and it goes for all major sports leagues. Some people mock scout and mock draft, and some people actually scout and actually draft.
The Washington Wizards had the chance to pick such stars as Pau Gasol, Joe Johnson and Tyson Chandler in the 2001 NBA Draft, but picking Kwame Brown was the Wizards' biggest mistake.
The Adam Morrison-Larry Bird comparison is definitely a whack for sure. I mean Morrison was really good in college but unfortunately he couldn't able to translate that into the NBA and became a bust.
Morrison would have had a solid career if he didn't have the ACL injury & the Type 1 Diabetes to deal with. That being said, comparing anyone to a GOAT level player is just insane.
i have to say some of these comparisons (like mitchell or simmons) are EXCELLENT.... they are LITERALLY those exact players except for the aptitude or end result, but in terms of WHAT GAME THEY PLAY, those were EXTREMELY accurate i think the creator of this video didn't understand this conceptually... it doesn't mean you have the same career, it means your game is like this player's game or your athletic attributes are similar, not that you end up in the same exact career path
Ah Eddie Curry, I remember how worried I was when he was traded that he’d take that step towards being the next Shaq and instead he took 2 steps back. Worse yet the Bulls actually drafted the perfect replacement for him with one of the picks from the trade in Aldridge but immediately traded down for the 4th pick and got Tyrus Thomas aka the next Stromile Swift 🤦♂️ At least they got a great defensive Center with the other pick in Joakim Noah the following year.
Some stereotypes are rooted so deep, you get surprised when a comparison makes sense. I think it was Bill Simmons that recently compared Lauri Markkanen to Tom Chambers. That makes sense. But really? Comparison to an American player? Isnt there some shooting bigs from europe more like him? Isnt that some sort of a rule?
I mean jabari was going to be amazing I remember some people even saying he should be drafted before wiggins. The injuries ruined his career nothing else
The Siakam/Luc comparison feels like how tv analysts typically compare compare white players to other white players. Luka could be a great PG and lead the league into assists. He’d only be compared to John Stockton and never Magic Johnson. It’s hilarious and sad at the same time.
The Donovan Mitchell Norman Powell comparison makes sense to me. Clearly Mitchell is the better player but dribbling style, size and athleticism are all similar. That was a great comparison actually.
But when the scout comapre are it to someone who’s not that good and they become a better player, the scout still get shit on. It’s a lose lose for them. It’s hard to predict how a player will do.
More than half of these comparisons actually make sense during their respective time. It is just unfair that you expect scouts to be on point. They aren't psychics.
Saying Ben Simmons as a “taller Jason Kidd” is actually pretty on point imo…both really good at D, not much of scorers, excellent passers, and high Basketball IQ, the playstyles are almost identical
I remember an NBA draft night where Jalen Rose is comparing White player prospect to a White current or former NBA player, Then Black Player prospect to a current or former Black NBA player lol
Different kind of player comp, but during the ‘06 draft Dick Vitale said that the Celtics made a mistake by drafting Rajon Rondo instead of UConn’s Marcus Williams. Jay Bilas doubled-down in agreement, as Williams was considered to be the better pure PG who could pass and run and offense better 😭
IMO, comparing Simmons to LeBron was not that absurd if you compare the way they were when they entered the league. LeBron was a somewhat below average shooter in 2003 and developed his jumper over the years, eliminating his main weakness. If Simmons had also developed a jumpshot, he'd still be compared to LeBron today. To be fair to the scout, the lack of willingness or ability to improve was probably very difficult if not impossible to spot before the draft.
You realize that Mason Plumlee never became as good as Yi Jianlins best NBA year right? Yi didn't flame out of the NBA, he just needed to become a superstar to justify playing in America because China taking all his money. Bargs and Dirk is a spot-on comp, but Darko, played nothing like them, he was always more of a rugged enforcer type evidenced by his post-basketball MMA career. Giannis and Batum was a great comp too.
At least DeShawn Stevenson won an NBA championship. The only unique thing about Jerryd Bayless is his name. Yi Jianlian is only a superstar in China, he doesn't want to play for the Bucks because he thinks they are a small market team. And if I am Ben Simmons, I will announced my NBA retirement today to save myself from further embarrassment!
Yi Jianlian is only a bust because he was drafted way too high and his 5 out style was too early back then. He'd be a decent stretch big if he's in the NBA now just as he is in the CBA, Olympics and FIBA.
I can actually kinda see the Norman Powell/Mitchell comp. They do play similar, Mitchell is just way better and more complete. They have similar bounce and ability to step into a J.
karl in college was a good defender but he changed in the nba edit: we all know draft comparison are always going to change in the nba but everyone evolves overtime
What i don't understand, how can you make comparison with a player 2-3 year in Nba? Those players are still developing. You can't say what they are, but you already make statement that this draftee will be that type of player. For example, i have seen comparison with Patrick Williams. That type of comparisons doesn't make sense for me.
You do realize that the majority of 13th overall picks don't amounts to much right? Kobe's don't grow on trees. You will not see many people comparing a 13th overall pick to a superstar very often. I could see why Spida was compared to Powell. Nothing wrong with being compared to respectable NBA players.
It's clear that you don't watch much basketball. Batum was a beast before the injuries. Giannis being compared to him was actually a great compliment to Giannis. The Bucks would have been more than happy if Giannis developed to prime Batum. Of course Giannis blew that out the water, but it wasn't ridiculous at all at the time.
There was nobody else besides Shaq to compare Eddy Curry to honestly. The Kat compared to Bogut is way worse and one of the worse ever because at no point in Towns' basketball career did he ever resemble Bogut, in fact before Kentucky Towns was playing Small Forward a lot so he always had the offense. Mitchel comparison to Powell is actually decent, it was not until very late in the draft process that Mitchel's stock rose, he was, like Powell, looked at as an explosive athlete with super long arms, who had inconsistent shooting and scoring in college.
Powell/Mitchell is actually a very good comparison. Very similar play styles. Obviously Mitchell because a generational player but the comp with Powell is legit
I don't think I'd call Mitchell a "generational" player, but he is a star. A "generational" player is someone rare like Luka. A guy that is 24 & is already tied with Curry for 1st Team All-NBA appearances. The term "generational" is reserved for the best 1 or 2 guys in a specific age group.
Simmons to LeBron? I was so excited and hopeful to see it come to fruition, but come on Ben. I hope whatever he's dealing with he gets through it or gets the help he heeds. He has so much potential to offer. Play ball!!!
