The Enchantments. Hands down this is the most scenic thru-hike under 30 miles in North America. Located in the heart of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in the Cascades of Washington State, the Enchantments Thru-Hike boasts incredible views of lush forests and high alpine lakes surrounded by jagged granite peaks. In this video I also took a side trip to a peak named Little Annapurna that overlooked the entire Enchanted Valley.
This video is a collaboration of Hiking/Backpacking RU-vid enthusiasts. Prior to this trip we had never met before, but by the end of this trip I was happy to say that I made some great new friends. Those who participated in this trip were Len and his son Jesse from the RU-vid Channel ‪@HikingwithGus‬ and ‪@BryceNewbold‬ who traveled all the way from Ohio to partake. A big thanks to Len for snagging the permit that made this trip possible for all of us.

I enjoyed every second of this video. As you and Len put it,, the scenery is overwhelmingly beautiful! It surely wasn't easy to walk all these 30 miles with heavy gear on the back while doing the filming at the best possible angel. So heaps of thanks for your efforts! I also subscribed to Len and Jesse's channels. 😊❤

Another great video Danny! So awesome to take your time and really enjoy the core! The only time I was able to stay in the core I stayed at Crystal lake…which no one seems to stay at. But it has one of the best sites to camp at that I’ve ever experienced. You captured it beautifully! Kudos!
@DannyJSchaefer
@DannyJSchaefer Год назад
I really appreciate it! The core is, and was pretty incredible. I did it a few years back in June but it was covered in snow still so I really got to experience what it was all about this time around. I really wanted to go into Crystal Lake. It always seems to get less attention than the others like you said, and so it probably would've been well worth it to go into it. It seemed to me it was just a hair off the beaten path, and I'm sure the views were top notch when you stayed there. I really want to explore the "Northern" Enchantments up past Prusik Peak one of these days. Thanks so much for watching this video!

Thru hiked it yesterday. 21 hours. I misjudged the difficulty of the actual trail itself -- lots of boulder and elevation to navigate, and it's just hard to make up time anywhere. Also, dozens of goats were fun to see. I'm 58 and really don't hike or train much at all, but even if you are in decent shape, you want to respect this one.

I first experienced Enchantment Lakes Basin in October 1978. They were not well known then and it was simple to get a permit at the trailhead. (I started backpacking when man first walked on the moon-July 1969)

Wow thanks so much for this comment. How I would've liked to see the trail through your eyes back then. The Enchantments are beautiful and one of a king, but to see them nearly 50 years ago when they were relatively untouched by man would be something special. Thanks for sharing this, Randy.

Wow, it seems like you cannot throw a rock without hitting a gorgeous Alpine Lake!!! Dragon Tail Peak is jaw droppingly breathtaking!!! I am not sure where you got all your energy after the 50 + miler you just finished!! So cool you got to team up with some other RU-vidrs!!! We will definitely check them out!!! Any friend of Danny’s is a friend of ours!!! Oh, so glad you continued with the walk by shots, those are awesome!!! Love the river crossing in the beginning and how you incorporated the handheld shot. Your calves look pretty ripped!!! All that hiking has given you the strength to leap over a mountain in a single bound!!! Flashback to my Super Dan joke!!! Seriously, you look in great shape!!! Holy moly, I feel like I am going to exceed my limit on the use of the word breathtaking and use of exclamation points today!!! That shot around the 2-minute mark of you with the mountains in the backdrop was breathtaking!!! The water in the lake a few seconds later looked turquoise. Is that glacier run off by any chance? Wow, you do a great job packing your loadout!!! It looks like you can cram 100 lbs. of gear into a 50 lbs. bag 😊. Oh man, you are the IPA whisperer!!! I am taking you on all my hikes!!! Hehehehehe, you are a man of many talents!!! That shot at the 4:20 mark with you and Bryce sitting down looking at the lake was awesome!!! Talk about front row seats to a beautiful view!!! Oh man, that must have been tough getting up at 430 with all the rain, you looked pretty beat!!! You deserve the ironman award for filming that early. Yikes, I have no idea how you do that! Definitely a video where we had to pause it a lot. That shot of you at the 6:04 mark looked awesome!!! We are glad Len was not eaten by any goats!! That was an AWESOME shot of the goat!!! Were you guys there when he came to visit? We heard voices in the background. That little guy seemed to have no fear!!! Ohh, love the sound of the waterfall!! All those rocks must have been tough on the knees and ankles!!! I get why the goat hangs out there. 😊 Those mountain ridges look like they are in the Swiss Alps. What a great vantage place to wait out the rain!!! My God, the lake and the scenery are just amazing!!! The top of Asgard pass, (not sure I spelled that correctly), looks like a different world!!! It is crazy how beautiful and unique it looks!!! You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a mountain lake. That is AWESOME!! Wow, I can see where Isolation Lake got its name 😊. Oh wow, is that the highest you have ever camped? The lake looks tiny below. Len rocks!!! I would not be able to make it up there!!! Holy crap, I cannot believe how close those goats were to your tent. They do not seem to have much fear of people. I am surprised you did not wake up with one in your tent!!! 😊 Oh wow, the shot of the sunset behind the mountain peak was insane!!! The yellow, gold, and orange, overlapping the blue was, you guessed it, breathtaking!!! Glad you finally got a good night sleep!!! I can see why the goats love it up there, that is like goat heaven. Lots of boulders to keep predators away, you can see for miles, tons of water, and a bunch of grass. If I were a goat, I would live there too! You need to get a flag, so you can plant one each time you summit a peak!!! I swear it looks like someone stacked those rocks and boulders on that peak!!! HOLY COW, that reveal when you looked over the top of the summit AND saw another mountain peak below is INSANE!!! How crazy is that!!! To be looking down on another summit. What a breathtaking shot!!!! Not to mention, a long way down!!! Yikes! One wrong move and you would be goat snacks!!! Annapurna Peak is crazy beautiful!!! Our hearts jumped into our throats when we saw the shot of the mountains in the background and all the clouds in the sky AND REALIZED you were sitting on the edge!!!! Holy Crap!!! I hope your Mom does not see that, she will have a gripper!!! There is LESS than a ZERO chance I would ever do that!!! Now that is literally having a first-row seat to the beauty of nature. I think you are part mountain goat!!! You know, if you were bitten by a radioactive mountain goat, you would have mountain goat super powers!!!! I am guessing you were bitten while you were a sleep!!! It is hard to tell, but it looks like you got a bit of a suntan or maybe a sun burn up there. Hard to tell with the overcast skies. Nothing like finding a personalized direction letting you know where to go!!! Hehehehe, loved the sound effect when you went swimming. If that were me, it would have been the sound of women and children running and screaming in terror!!! Both the goats would have also went blind!!! Was that water colder than the lake you took a dip in, in the Sawtooths? I am going to say no. The Dorito burrito looks tasty!!! Man, we cannot get over those gorgeous sunsets!!! Hehehehe, you were being stalked by mountain goats!!! I know so little about wildlife, I am surprised they would follow you. I think they were attracted to your mountain goat cup!!! That may have been their long-lost brother in the picture. Oh man! I remember the cell phone fall from your short!!! I cannot believe, 1. You found it, and 2. It survived the fall. Wow, you are one lucky duck!!! So glad you found it!!! That forest trail you were on looked so green. It seemed out of place surrounded by all those mountains. There is one thing for sure, there was no shortage of water!!! That stream in the rocks was raging!!! That shot at the 27:40 mark was amazing! That second swim looked like it may have been a bit warmer, like 50 degrees instead of 47 degrees 😊 Wow, that descent at the 28:45 mark looked insanely steep!!! Ahh, Danny rocking the lunch lady look! I bet that netting comes in very handy in places like that!!! That was a pretty big campsite for sure! You guys really lucked out! Wow, the 30:49 shot may have been the money shot for this trip for me. There was a TON of killer shots, but that may have been the best!!! The water on all those lakes looks like a piece of glass. It is so smooth!!! I think Bryce’s description was right on. I may have said mind blowing! I know what you mean about lacking the words to describe what you see. There are not enough words in a thesaurus or enough punctuation marks in the world to express how beautiful that area is!!! Nothing like a beer to end a great trip!! I will have to visit Wallace and pick some up once we get there!!! Glad all you guys were safe and had a wonderful time!!! Thanks so much for another great adventure!!! We hope Tessa and Lolly are doing well!!! Be well and stay safe!!!

Oh man this whole area is.. wait for it.. breathtaking. The alpine lakes, the jagged peaks... what more can I say?! It's crazy that this exists so locally to the PNW. Yes! Definitely check them out - they're all great people :) Haha thanks for the comment on the calves! Lol the Sawtooths set me up pretty well for this one. I believe all of the water is a mixture of snow and glacier runoff, yep! Feel free to use the same words and the exclamation marks over and over again!!! Oh man the goat shot was incredible! He was actually in front of us on the trail and we were stuck behind him for the longest time.. until we finally were able to move around him. Len was still stuck behind him at one point though, and the goat kept following and following us.. so as he was walking towards me I set my camera up really fast and was able to walk away to get the shot! It was awesome!! Believe it or not, the Enchantments and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness area in the Washington Cascades are pretty low in overall in elevation. We were much much higher up (by a couple thousand feet at least) in the White Clouds last year. You're right Little Annapurna was beautiful! It's probably one of the easiest peak bags that I've completed, but one of the most rewarding as well! Haha yeah to be honest I haven't showed my mom any of that footage or pictures 😂 I may not do that for awhile!! Just sitting on that ledge and taking a moment to enjoy the views was one of my favorite parts of the entire trip!! Haha with the sounds effects! Tessa reaaaally wanted me to put that in so I kept it. I thought it was pretty funny too! I felt like that water a few degrees warmer than that lake in the Sawtooths. I was full on expecting it to be the same temp due to the snow on the mountain sides! Those were 100% the same goats and they followed us pretty far that day. It's like they knew our scents. I went to relieve myself before going to bed that night, and mama goat approached me pretty quickly mid-stream... She was pretty aggressive actually. Needless to say I was over them by the end of this trip. Haha they probably did want the mountain goat cup!! I can't believe I found the phone either! I was going to be so bummed.. All of my pictures, GPS tracks, etc.. were on it. I was full on prepared to go swimming that morning. That walk down into Nada Lake is always stunning! Plus we were able to catch it at sunrise!! Beautiful. Ahh the beer at the end was the capper of another awesome adventure! We then went to a brewery and continued the fun! Thanks so much for watching the video my friend! I hope you and your mom are doing fantastic, and hope that your Fall is off to a nice start. Cheers!!

@@DannyJSchaefer No kidding, those peaks were jagged. I don’t think I mentioned that in my previous comment. They looked so cool! The goat shot killed! Wow, I would have not guessed that area was lower in altitude! It looked like you were at the top of the world on some of those shots! Hehehehe, probably a good thing you haven’t showed your Mom the footage!!! You should warn her first 😊😊😊! Oh man, that had to be wild having the goat walk up while you were tending to the call of nature!!! Agreed, enough is enough 😊 Yes, thanks we are doing well!!! @DannyJSchaefer Год назад
Hey Kraig! Thanks for watching and for checking out the video! We pulled a Core Zone permit for this one. It’s the permit that’s sought after because it gives access to camp at any of the zones for your trip. Does that help? If I can help any more feel free to ask away.

@@DannyJSchaefer So I put in core the Core Zone as my first choice and Colchuck second then Eightmile lake third. Should I just get rid of the second and third choices? Also I think we're nearly neighbors I live in SW Portland/Tigard.
@DannyJSchaefer
@DannyJSchaefer Год назад
That’s completely up to you. I think you’d have a better chance of getting a permit for Colchuck/Eightmile, but the Core is definitely the best one to get. With the Colchuck permit you can at least hike out of Colchuck Lake, up Aasgard, through the Core Zone, to Snow Lakes, and out to the trailhead. For the best overall experience I’d recommend going for the Core, you probably just have a less chance to get it. I’m in Northern Idaho, in retrospect we’re about neighbors!
