My parents thankfully do understand. She knows they were super lucky entering into the housing market when they did. I’ll tell you the analogy she uses to explain it and maybe that can help you explain to your parents. So it all comes down to how much money you have free to spend right. Let’s liken that to frogs trying to jump up a staircase. So you have two frogs. One can just barely clear the first stair with its jump (aka has the capital for their very first apartment), and the other just barely can’t reach that first step. Now the first frog having made it up the first step can jump up to the second step, and from there to the third step and so on until they reach the top. Meanwhile the second frog is still struggling to clear that first step at the very bottom. Apart from this one tiny thing these frogs are identical and yet one is at the top and one is at the bottom. The same with housing. The person who was able to add their first apartment can usually afford to upgrade and buy more housing by selling off the one they already have. Eventually they will probably end up with a house. Then you have the people who can’t afford that first apartment, they probably won’t be able to get a house. We have created an environment where that first apartment is an incredibly difficult bar to clear. So naturally young people are struggling with housing as a result.

My parents understand but they struggled until just a couple of years ago with paying bills. I finally got my CPA license and am so relieved because I will probably have to take care of them when they're older. My dad has worked 60-80 hours a week for years but will probably get hardly anything from SS. The system is fucked.

My mom had this vision of me doing 2 years at my community College then moving to Houston to work and complete another 2 to get my bachelor's. We lived in a tiny town with very few jobs an hour away from Houston and that plan wasn't very different from what she did when she was my age so I showed her the actual job market for a 2 year degree and Houston rent. She understood and said "Well at least I'll have my baby at home for a few more years than expected." Silver lining if there ever was one.

Here in sweden rent isn't the absolute worst but finding an apartment will take you at least 5+ years unless you somehow (rich parents) can buy one. Its incredibly common for adults to live at home up until their 30s, not by choice. I've heard it's very similar in most of the world right now. Sure new apartments are built all the time... but they're built for the people that can afford a new place.

@Nic DeGrave dammit you caught me also as a 20 year old in the uk our minimum wage is £7.50 for a 20 y/o, and for over 23 £10.42 im struggling to pay fuel, insurance, rent and other monthly expenditures whilst also trying to save whatever little money i have for a apartment. now for my income i make £9 an hour and 40 hour weeks, its a stable job but not much scope so im now also doing a set of courses for getting a it job hopefully(ps sorry for the info dump had to vent a little)

This happened to me! For my second job in 2021-2022 (my main job was as a teacher in an inner city) I worked at a chain bookstore. My manager would complain to me about how people would “quiet quit” after working a single shift. I “joked” that it was probably because of the help wanted signs at the stores on either side of us offering $15 and $17per hour. I was getting paid $8 and was only staying because of the book discount for my classroom. I quit both jobs when I found out the assistant manager was making $10k per year more than me, even though I was working two jobs

Same thing happened at my old job. We were getting $11/hr when a very similar store opened up directly next to ours offering $15 an hour. Lots of people brought this up to management, and when we got a $0.12 raise, half the staff quit, in addition to those who had quit before the raise. Guess what? About a month later our pay was raised to $14/hr (still a better deal because cashiers at the other store only made $10 rather than the stocker's $15) so that they could actually have an attractive enough rate to hire new people.

Simple being super wealthy often times means being a sociopath

It is harder than you might think, but still quite doable, especially if you are willing to take some compromises. Individual full apartments might be difficult, but communal apartment with shared bath facility would be fairly easy.

I was still living in Texas when COVID hit and I felt so bad for the construction workers because they were STILL working out in SUMMER HEAT WITH MASKS. I was never able to deal with the heat while wearing jeans, I can't imagine how they powered through it. Your dad sounds like a saint.

The one time I was in the car when he stopped by he kinda just called the nearest dude over did some dad talk and passed a cooler of lemonades over the tape from the sidewalk and came back to the car. It was such a non event to me and I didn’t even realize everything until he told it as a funny story at a family get together. I like to think maybe we and some of gen X are putting our money where our mouths are and making things better by being less likely to kick out or cut off our kids. Many of us never had the chance to turn down work regardless of what kind of sh*tty job it was or how cagey they were about pay as our parents either couldn't or wouldn't support us. What I'm seeing now is that it's getting less stigmatised for people college/uni age and above to stay living with parents and, unlike most of my friends, they aren't expected to pay massive amounts to their parents as board. I literally have one friend who had to sleep on the sofa in the living room but still paid a few hundred quid a month in board, was expected to buy all her own food, pay for things for her younger siblings, and still be keeping up with car payments and saving for a rent deposit. One of my sister's friends lived in an unconverted garden shed in her parents' garden. If nothing else, we can at least do better by the next generation than sticking them on sofas and in sheds and still demanding they pay us rent.

As a millennial that lives with a Gen Xer I have to constantly remind them of this. Gen Z is doing amazing things and starting off so young with enacting the changes needed to guarantee their own futures on this planet and as a mom to three Gen Zers all I can say is I'm a proud mama bear. ❤

They're either gonna change society, or society's gonna pound them right into the dirt. We'll see. When the zoomers hit their 30s, there may be a groundswell of resentment and resistance from those millennials who are bought in and settled down.

Heres another Gen Xer who gets it. When I graduated, my whole country was in the midst of a huge recession, people lost homes, jobs, everything. Suicide rates were all time high, unemployment rates broke all sorts of records. The color was sucked out of the world suddenly. The only jobs in the classifieds were super shady MLMs or even shadier door-to-door sales. Young people didnt have any chance of getting jobs, when there was much more experienced applicants. Many of my classmates got dropped in the abyss of addiction, because life became so damn hopeless, some of them are still there or dead. I remember counting pennies to buy milk! So I get it, what youre going thru now is just another side of that same monster and I know how it feels, many of us do. My only consolation is this: its not gonna be like this forever, somethings gotta give, sooner or later. So just hang on until that, you got this!

@@kkkkkkkxd4692 Yeah, the place was put under new management, I was fired and he quit. Edit: I was fired because the new people thought one person could handle all the work at the property.

I had the opposite experience, I started at a company and in my section there was three other people working with me. Over two years they all left and I was there alone and so I figured I needed a raise. I asked for a raise and they asked me what extra I was willing to do for the extra money. A heated back and forth and I left the company. Two weeks later I went back for my final paycheck and there were four people working in my section again. They should've just coughed up the money and saved themselves all those extra wages.

@@workindad Yeah, management never knows what they've got until they have to pay double or more for it. I don't know for certain what happened, but one week after I left a different job (underpaid, overworked, and never got my promised promotion) I checked back and the whole crew had been replaced. So either I missed a culling, or all the extra work I did suddenly stopped happening.

What I'm gathering from this conversation is that not treating your employees properly is not only scummy, it's also stupid. Employers are often stupid.

More than likely both. By the way, fun, isn’t it, that because most Americans can’t actually afford clothes made in the US, we have to rely on sweatshops (literally slave labor, usually overseas but sometimes in our own backyard) for clothing.

@@powerofk yup. We hate slaves but can't afford to pay for products that aren't made by slaves. Why? Because the people who own the slave operated sweatshops refuse to pass their savings onto us. I miss the pre-depression days when we produced our own economy, and the government taxed imports/exports instead of the citizens. But they make more money now, and people will NEVER vote to reduce their own wealth willingly.

@@synthwolfe8906 You do realize that pre-depression, there was no minimum wage, it was legal to hire 5-year-olds in factories and in coal mines, Social Security was nonexistent, and it was legal to discriminate on basis of race, religion, national origin, and sex. The gap between rich and poor was even greater than today. The gap was narrowest from around 1940 to around 1980.

What concerns me a lot lately is the *entire* houseload of people living in a place each needs 2-3 jobs. Roughly 3 people per place or more x3 incomes/ea. Wtf. Wtf is happening. No wonder no one can live alone.. when a one-bedroom is housing 5+ or something. If you have roommates, some places charge more per head. Fun. I can see why child labor laws are relaxing. Why should Timmy go to school? Doesn't he know that there's no future from education, and that his true path has always been poverty? Pshaw. I'm in Canada, witnessing a lot of professional people suddenly needing side jobs. You can quit jobs, but you can't escape needing to work. Even in disability settings, the $ sent is less than rent. You know, because that makes sense. You lose your shelter portion ($500.. woo! Sign me up for a walk-in closet in a bedroom.. in a stranger's house!!) The moment you lose housing. Good luck renting. Another distressing thought I have about children working is the very real possibility Timmy is the only one in the house with any jobs.

YES! I work in a field with mainly older people (40+) and have gotten chastised for not talking with them about kids or divorces or like you sex jokes. Whenever I try to make small talk with them it's ALWAYS one of those topics and it's irritatingly bland to me. I don't wanna be rude so I usually just sit quietly on my phone, which irritates them lol I can't win 😅

I have a worker who loves to talk, not listen, talk, and he can't just talk to a wall either, I need to show that I'm listening to his endless chatter about some guy who invented a machine to clean glass bottles or something which inevitably morphs into something something Tesla is bad, electric cars are bad, which then morphs into Trump is good, blah blah Hunter Biden's laptop and there's a 50/50 shot he ends with Russia or China. and if I don't enable this cearly self-distructive and spiralling thought process all the way down into the weird racist rants about all the stones he threw at Aboriginal people but it's ok, because they beat him up too, then he gets angry at me for being unsociable, and talks about how he wants to just drive into a wall on his way home, because he just gets that depressed. then if I ever get to bring up a topic I like, he so quickly loops it back into whatever he wants to talk about, I swear, I get like 2 verses at the start of his several hour long whine-symphony.I'm quitting because of him, and he has the audacity to tell me he's the nicest guy I'll ever work with. one of the funniest stories he tells is about how the Egyptian Pyramids have hallways with no sign of the soot that would come from torches, and being so flabbergasted about how they could have possibly built those hallways without torches. maybe the ceiling of the hallway - and by extension, the rest of the pyramid above - wasn't built yet?! maybe?!

Yeh, it's the old "evil snitch"-mentality: The issue isn't me being an asshole or doing super illegal and dangerous stuff, that's fine - the real issue is people caaling me out for doing it or reporting it to officials or whatever. Even in my country, Chile, it made it so they were as fucked as common workers with no rights at the start of the XX century, so it even was common for soldiers to be on the left. Being a soldier wasnt that different to having any other low wage job, when the middle class was barely being born

There's the added factor of people who experienced the more recent (unnecessary and poorly run) instances of combat with which the the US was involved are at an age where their children are at recruiting age. WWII vets to their children: "I served my country and helped defeat fascism. Join up, son. You'll meet interesting people and travel on Uncle Sam's dime for a righteous cause." Vietnam/Afghanistan/Iraq vets to their children: "My country exposed me to unsafe chemicals an/or sent me overseas for bullshit reasons where I watched my friends die for an unjust cause. Now I have PTSD from the combat and cancer and my kids are at a higher risk of developing cancer because of my exposure to burn pits and agent orange. Stay the fuck away from the US military, son."

Eh, a 10 minute walk to/from work isn't bad most of the time, but I have a physical job in a location that gets lots of snow in winter and walking through knee-deep snow after a long day at work isn't fun. My home is far more relaxing than the commute anyway.

Sincerely as a Parent thank you for sharing this💖 just being tossed out without any prep may have worked for their normal soceital patterns due to a much more stable economy that wasn't exactly respected and now the following generations are dealing with the outcome...not many back then had information access to things like economy growth or stability without the education first...so with that being said some acknowledged accountability of their ignorance and/or choices is indeed necessary for things to move forward....

She absolutely deserves praise, it just... Her attitude should be the norm. The fact that we have to praise people for doing the bare minimum of parenting in the modern world is so depressing.

I hate to stay at home even when I have days off because I can only work in bed there, and if I'm in bed I'm in non-work mode. I think if I ever get the chance to properly zone my house so that I have a "work space" and a "non-work space" I'm gonna adapt this!

I find wearing a different style of clothes at work helps. When I'm working I dress sports casual (jeans, polo shirt, trainers) When I'm off I dress like a 90's grunge throwback, complete with custom 501s and flannel shirt.

Similar in Norway, but it is with aging food not in its prime. It helps those who are already struggling, it reduces waste, the store profits, and sometimes people get the chance to try out foods they would otherwise never afford. It has really helped when I am in a pinch.

But you have a responsibility to only display the nicest fruit and burn the rest! It's unconscionable to not waste food! _Unconscionable!_

I used to work in a store that sold bread that was too close to its expiry date for grocery stores. When it got very close, we marked it down even further. If it actually expired (still fine to eat), then employees were allowed to take home whatever we wanted for free. I buy frozen fruit now from a brand called "Perfectly Imperfect" - it's misshapen pieces that wouldn't sell fresh, but they slice and freeze it, and most of the time it doesn't even look different. It's not that much cheaper, but I like the idea of trying to lower waste.

Another member of Gen X I agree with the mother. I'm glad I got my home when I did even though it was in a time it was tough for a buyer. My old apartment is going for about as much as my mortgage and it's smaller. What we see is businesses buying homes to rent which will drive up the price.

@@Alverant For real. Currently I am living with my mother bc she is partially disabled and needed my help, but bc she can afford it, we live in an extremely expensive/tourist heavy city. And what I see happening here is two fold- one foreign business/wealthy people are building massive skyscrapers that are so expensive only people like them can afford a unit (whether business or home), and two, bc of the tourism, people who can afford any type of home are buying them up as fast as possible to turn them in AirBnBs or short term rentals. Which is making the working class of the city unable to afford to buy anything.

There's quite a lot of gen x that get it, mainly those of us born later in the generation so mid to late 70's especially as we have been affected by it too. Shortly after I graduated from university, the house prices were starting to skyrocket and by the time I was earning enough to afford to buy a house, the recession hit.

Oh God... I do IT work for a university and we are so understaffed that we fall behind on most of our projects. Imagining the same understaffing in a hospital where people's lives can be lost due to slow processes or glitches is horrifying.

In the city where I lived, the appartments for students were quite expensive. So, my University promised to construct bunch of new ones, the lower the prices on the market. The new ones? Luxury appartments. Did the prices went lower? Absolutely not, and they're still increasing over the years.

"don't worry, we know that landlords are making the prices to hight. But our university is a landlord too. And we will create cheap rentings, to pressure the rent market and make the prices going down". It's immoral, but not illegal.

The amount of places I've worked where they pushed me to nearly passing out from exhaustion or getting physically hurt on the job due to the place cutting corners on safety is way too much. I'm at the point of giving up on ever working in a place where I don't need to fear I'll end up in the ER for a work related injury

As I said I'm currently at risk of being kicked out and my abusive family are making me choose between college and paying rent if they DON'T kick me out so I don't even have an opportunity to save like that... So unfortunately our plan's not looking good

I worked full-time and went to college full-time but it was pretty stressful. I also left a cult-like church at the same time hahaha My mental health went downhill for sure.

Although our minimum wage is higher than most of the states, rent is astronomical in comparison, also...our health care system has all but collapsed. The only people I know with a family doctor is my mother and sister, no one at work has a family doctor, and none of my friends do, most try and use walk-in clinics, but you literally need to line up 2-3 hrs before they open to skip the lineups now. I'm not trying to discourage, but being very honest about what living here is like. I work for events and banquets, so all over the city, and I make more than the minimum wage, but I still struggle. A lot. Our government may not necessarily be run by corporations, instead...it's run by idiots, and we have a growing portion of the population(many of those western politicians) that have extreme right views...to put it mildly. On the plus side, people don't get shot for knocking at the wrong door, and you can feel relatively safe wandering most cities at night, just don't do that in Saskatchewan, during the winter, while drunk, ESPECIALLY if you look even remotely indigenous.

Struggle is one thing, it literally being impossible to survive is another, and the US is teetering right on that edge for anyone without their parents paying for their life. Also the fear of being shot thing is legitimately very real on a day to day basis for me. It's less of a concern where I live currently but I remember growing up in the rural South... If I'm this terrified as a white man I don't know how other demographics survive. I am autistic which means that if I did have an encounter with police it'd basically be a death sentence, even though I've never even considered breaking the law.

I'll tell you now that plenty of small town bars/restaurants pay 2.13 per hour and do not make that rate up if your tips don't make you equal the 7.25 fed minimum wage. They get away with it by being one of the few employers in the town and hiring ppl who can not afford an attorney and are located in areas where the nearest legal aid is at least 45 minute drive away. It happened to between younger, my neighbor's kids, and several other teens in town.

I love how they'll spend so much goddamn money on perpetuated lies about why x thing that is clearly bad for you is actually good for you, instead of just, paying people more. They'll lobby, pay off studies, make up lies, so many things that likely cost them so much more money, ffs just pay your workforce a living wage then we'll stop bitching at you *_HoLy fUcK_*

I literally saw an article claiming that "research shows" the cure for burn out is working more. They cited one or two "experts" with little to no data and a job or relationship with a large corporation, talking about how maybe you should work from Fiji one week a month and put in extra hours or something equally absurd. Completely out of touch nonsense mostly designed for the 90s off their face on coke 70+ hour a week upper earner, not practicible or effective for the vast majority of workers. I'm sure for massively overworked but also incredibly well paid middle class workers, the commute home on the train where they're not necessarily expected to be on call and can just watch the trees go by from a comfy business class seat, the commute CAN be a positive.

Thats what i feel as well, im lucky enough to be able to attend college but i dont expect to be making enough to afford a house. I mean its not that bad in my country, but i wont be able to be happy here (with the anti lgbtq+ views in here) But im still worried that it would be even harder to be able to life out there, in another country. With how even more "wild" the economic system is and finding connections and friends. im constantly worried that i would die alone in a dingy apartment while freezing on the winter.

Because they grew up in a time where working side jobs was enough to have a decent life. And instead of realizing the world has changed, they'd rather blame the younger generation. Try to distance yourself from her (because the abuse is going to catch up to you eventually if you don't) and get your mind to togheter for the time you have to leave her behind. Shout out to our last apartment where nothing was repaired properly and the infestation was so bad it was structurally integral. We were literally yelled at when the barely functional plumbing caused problems that we literally couldn't do anything about (human waste running down the walls of the unit downstairs). The rent was raised every six months and reached 1300 before we were forced to leave (almost double what it started as in the span of two years). This was at the height of the pandemic and there was and still is nowhere to go.

Yeah, me and my friends want to move out, but we'd literally all have to be working 24/7 at our current jobs with no days off all day everyday or all have Master degrees working jobs that fit said degrees. Inflation doesn't care about the poor or less fortunate, it only favors the rich. It's so tempting to just rob a bank instead of putting in hard honest work.

Even here in Belgium, renting an appartment is extremly expensive. €800.00 for a 2 bedroom appartment, no parking. And we are living from 1 income at the moment.

McDonald's where I worked will not let employees eat or take home food that goes unsold, and any food that has prep errors also have to be thrown away, in the garbage in the kitchen in full view of management. (Say, a cook forgot to add cheese, or condiment on a special order) Our manager told us this was to discourage the "young staff" from deliberately making food wrong or making too much, in order to "score" free food. Swing manager had a "pusher stick" which was metal and had a flat head to squish all the food in the waste can into a disgusting mess before taking to dumpster, so no one could salvage an actual meal.

It's a common rule on all McDonalds unless local law says otherwise They usually say it is to "stop bums from piling outside their business", which is clearly BS because of what you just described AND because they don't donate left-over food either

Tbh, factory work is perhaps the best paying work out there that doesn’t require any sort of college education to get into, not to mention the benefits that full-time work with such companies can offer, assuming he’s working for the right sort of company (NOT AMAZON). I just started a job with Legget & Platt in the town where I live. They’re the biggest company that no one’s really heard of as they manufacture adjustable frames which go into all sorts of different applications. Ours is a new factory location which manufactures the power-adjustable bed frames for companies like Sealy and TempurPedic. As our plant is so new in the area, demand is HIGH for all sorts of positions, even leadership positions. We’ve only been in production for 2 1/2 weeks, the first half week being training for the only line currently in production, there will eventually be four assembly lines once it’s all said and done, along with our welding department which is also already in operation and a powder coat area which is just waiting to start-up. As of now, I am already in training for my Line Lead position which I will be taking on full-time once Line 2 starts up and we’re preparing our Zone 2 lead for HER Line Lead position once I’ve taken control of my line…and we’re both still working through a temp agency as is the majority of our current staff. Needless to say that we’ll both be going full-time very shortly. Once that happens, I’ll be looking at something around a $20/hr. wage, along with medical insurance, a 401K plan and earning a week’s paid vacation for every 90 days of employment with the company. Manufacturing is really the last decent job opportunity available here in the States for entry-level workers, so your husband is rather fortunate to have one himself as these jobs are also very difficult to find these days… Props to him and I wish you both the best going forward…👍🏻

@@jmurray1110 Well, here in Germany at least food prices already are getting down for a while (we measure them in store brand cucumber prices. Normal price was 2 years ago at 20 cents per cucumber, half a year ago they were at 1.30€ and have been dropping slowly but steadily to 55 cents this week now). Even the house market that has reached ridiculous amounts (by far not as bad as in the US, but worse than it has ever been) is now starting to slowly stagnate and in some areas decline. Those of us who have been looking for house prices - or rather property prices that are often 10 times higher - are actually expecting that bubble to explode within the next 2 years. We also hope that the newest property tax bill by our government (that allows the states to tax freely according to regional living standard costs) will also be canceled. In my area property is among the most expensive in the country, and i know an 80 year old retired man with a small house and a huge property that is not used in any way except for taking walks. He paid for the last 10 years around 400 € tax per year for it. He got a letter from the city council that informs him that he now has to pay 14k (!) every year. His retirement income is lower than 14k! He inherited the property from his parents (who got it after ww2 by a redistribution of property directed by the US government) and had barely enough income to build a 200m² house on it.

​@@christopheralthouse6378I will add utility work being another good paying (and in some cases) pension jobs with minimum training. I've seen people in their early 20s start as field workers. As they progress with their career, they get more company paid training. I can't imagine how teachers and parents don't teach the next gen about trade jobs.

Unfortunately, once inflation hits and companies adjust to how much people are willing to pay for things, the prices don't go back down. The inflation rate going forward may grow at a slightly diminished rate, but that's probably the only relief we'll see barring a major event.

My boss said "you can't be discussing that" and i just gave her a side eye, didn't even answer her. She actually thought she could keep it a secret. Weirdest part is that we were all paid the same for the same positions, she had no reason to keep it hidden.

At one point I shifted from one pack house to another and was asked the reason, its a full hour closer so I save 2 hours in travel time in a day. She told me that she travels 2 hours to be there in the morning and I so wanted to ask "do you make minimum wage with 0 benefits too?". Like seriously some of these higher ups are completely disconnected from the average worker even when their whole job is to hire new people. edit: spelling.
