Went to a class this summer: They say huddling in a corner is a bad idea. That just makes one an easy target. They're saying don't stand together and if the shooter enters your space to move or throw something at them: Because its harder to strike a moving target and because they are not expecting people to fight back... so when a laptop is flying that their head it might break their stride and give folks time to flee or counter attack.

I get that in the heat of the moment everything is different and that it's all about self preservation as a natural instinct and that they were all young and inexperienced but when a shooter starts executing people single file I would hope they someone in the group would realize a mob attack is the only hope. The one kid did say that but he didn't think anyone else would do it to. You've just got to try man and all you can do is hope others pick up on the plan. Someone is likely to get shot but that's better than everyone getting shot and having the shooter get to choose where on top of it too. Clock really is ticking in a situation like that. Each person he executes drops the chance of you surviving significantly
@TheDiepzone

My employer put us in training/awareness for these type of shooting and it's basically 3 simple rules to follow; run, hide or fight 1. Run if you can 2. Hide and barricade 3. Fight, look for weapon and use it They told us about Virginia tech and showed the survival rate of a classroom that barricaded vs the one that was not vs the one where the teacher was holding the door so students could escape. The barricaded only had injuries if I'm not mistaken. The one with heroic teacher had 3 deaths (including the teacher sadly) and the last classroom almost everyone died if not everyone. This is from memory so sorry if information is incorrect but the gist is the same. Doing something increases your chances for survival.

@@frostbite3820I agree entirely My history teacher taught my class that if we ever had a shooter trying to get in he would be in front of the door with a shotput ball ready for throwing and have the students climb as high as they could in stacked up desks with something to throw at the gunman if it ever came to it Luckily that situation never happened but it stuck with me to remember if I am ever in a shooter situation if there is no way we could escape

Putting aside how utterly tragic these events are for a second, I just want to point out how refreshing it is to hear a dispatcher who is extremely good at both calming callers/victims down as well as gathering crucial information for law enforcement. I'm sick and tired of hearing 911 calls where the dispatcher does a piss poor job -- by either not knowing the proper information to gather, or by having an obnoxious attitude and treating the caller as if they're supposed to act a certain way when they're literally in fear of losing their lives. That shit drives me crazy. So, props to this awesome dispatcher as well as her law enforcement squad for handling this situation about as well as possible in such a chaotic scenario. Also, my sincere condolences to all of the victims and their loved ones.

I don’t think this case is any more twisted than any other. He was just another narcissist with an antisocial personality, who didn’t fit in. But instead of joining groups of young people with similar interests, joining a church (not my thing but it may have helped him), or reaching out to family or a councillor he chose instead to harbour resentment and hatred. They coddle and nurture that resentment until it turns completely black, and then they start formulating their plan. If they can’t get the attention every narcissist desires by doing positive, then they’ll get it by doing negative. And they do. They kill who and what they covet. Other people who to them seemingly have everything they ever wanted. Friends, popularity, a partner, happiness, a job, and in this case, faith. I think in a sense they’re killing that part of themselves that wants and needs those same things, but for whatever reason hadn’t been able to achieve them. And whether they live or die they’ve still committed an emotional suicide. It’s sad for the victims that people like this don’t put in the same effort to address their social awkwardness as they do in planning the murders of innocent people. Or that they don’t just kill themselves. Not that I’m advocating that as a solution, just simply that if they’re going to kill why can’t they limit the death toll to just one: themselves. But for that to happen they might have to actually admit that there’s something wrong with them, instead of there being something wrong with everybody else. But a narcissist will NEVER see it that way, or they wouldn’t be a narcissist.

The part about LEO training for active shooter situations is super chilling. It used to be when somebody went into a school, college campus, public building, etc. with a gun they generally wanted something….usually attention ,sometimes money, often to spread a radical message they believed in. Now they go in with the intent to kill anyone and everyone possible as quickly as possible before they end up at a point where they are either killed or forced to kill themselves. They won’t wait for cameras to arrive or make demands, they won’t take hostages. They just shoot everyone they can. This is one reason I strongly believe law abiding citizens MUST be allowed to continue to carry firearms and be proficient in their use. While the police will generally do all they can to protect you, it will always take them time to respond and with mass shooters like we have today time is something potential victims just don’t have.

this! and dispatchers seemed genuinely appreciative of all the help that they could get too, especially with the tips that were coming in. it was very bittersweet how their community and people outside of their community came in and contributed with any information that they felt was important instead of just sitting on those gut feelings. something about this case was particularly heartbreaking, i remember it being the beginning of my senior year and there were like six or seven mass shootings by that first day of august and i was terrified of if it would happen in our school next every single day of that year. even now as an adult going back to community college im scared of what ppl could do bc of these cases, i just wish these things would stop. gun violence just keeps growing 😮‍💨

They are exposed to much greater extremes in all areas of life, including trauma and don’t perceive things with as strong emotions as other kids would. A school shooting is scary but it doesn’t traumatise American kids like it would others because they have a developed resilience due to the society they live in. Dr Wilkinson did an interesting study on it after the Ocala shooting where the shooter was in their school and kids were laughing and joking around and videoing themselves for their social media accounts.

Using humanity’s past as an excuse for the lack of emotion people have nowadays is disgusting, people like you who use excuses to downplay these killer’s massacres are part of the problem. Especially when you say obnoxious things like, “It’s really not that emotional,” that shows just how disconnected and dumb you are to society, as well as how much empathy you lack for these victims and their families. Not to mention it truly shows your mindset when you care more about a strangers gender identity than you do about the countless lives killed in this massacre. I keep meeting men with the (old) Aspergers diagnosis who were diagnosed because they dont display or understand emotions. When you get to know them you find out they are actually psychopaths and the lack of display/understanding of emotions is actually a lack of any emotions and a lack of empathy. My most recent aspergers ex friend told me he wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone. He stalked and threatened me when I cut him off and even had a different story for each of my friends to get them to make me do what he wanted again. He was a highly manipulative liar who regularly used his aspergers to avoid responsibility for his toxic behavior. His behavior was exactly the same as a very toxic (non-aspergers) person our friend group just kicked out. The only difference was social skills. They lack the ability to connect with anyone, think they are superior, have no empathy, dont care about how others are feeling, and crave social acceptance and social superiority. Instead of faking it in a charming way the standard accepted psychopath does, they shut down instead/lack charm and live in their heads meaning it can be mistaken for something else due to a lack of signs. You only find out what they are when they do crazy things, usually when they feel comfortable enough to show who they are. Imo men who had previously been diagnosed with Aspergers need to be reassessed as too many psychopaths were put under the term and not getting the help or monitoring they need. Hans Asperger was a Nazi so it makes sense he would fail to see psychopath traits as they are, due to who he was and the people he was around. People with Autism (me) have emotions very strongly but get too overwhelmed to show them often shutting down. We understand others emotions as well but the failure of understanding social situations means we dont know how to respond. We may also have trouble reading facial expressions to gauge emotion. We understand them when we known the person and their specific facial expressions. We connect well with the right people, and do well in the right environment with either social rules explained to us or none. We care about other people and how they are feeling. We have empathy. When told we are doing something wrong/hurtful, we stop and try to understand so we don't do it again. We often do our own thing and don't want to do social standards. We have few friends. We are ok with this once we understand why.

While guns are legal the people protecting full stop. It can be avoided or at least stopped/contained at the college entrances. So sad what a waste of lives by a waste of space. Mental health is not to blame, you can't blame someone's unpredictability because you have no control or specific warning signs to that but you can prevent it at the first point of entry to every school. Stagger the kids going thru the gates, give groups 5 minute intervals, start some in first lesson an hour later and they stay an hour later at the end of the day. Sorry probably all been said but why isn't it happening? Where is the action plan that will stop this from happening.

Kind of weird that the whole class wasn't able to overpower him after he explicitly said he was going to kill them all. Fear is a powerful enemy.

Asking if they're christian reminds me of the shooters from colombine and the book "she said yes" about cassie bernall. I feel so bad for everyone who witnessed or was affected by these situations.

Flyleaf wrote the song “Cassie” about that story. I will say Yes.

@@sundaisycake3372 An amazing song, but the actual victim who was asked that question was Valeen Schnurr. It was a mixed-up story for months that it was either Cassie or Rachel who was asked that question until the investigation made it clear it was Valeen who was asked and said yes (who ended up surviving by a miracle).

This is why good folks need to carry guns. Just look at New Mexico? Thank God for the police getting there so quick.

The way the narrator kept naming more and more victims in memory… horrific. May these children rest in forever peace.

Every single school should have trained armed personnel on the grounds at all times no exceptions. This should of been in place 20 years ago. God bless all the lives that were taken way too soon.
