Thanks for watching today! I've been putting a lot of effort into the last few months to make sure these uploads are the best they can possibly be. Hope y'all have been enjoying them! - small edit- around 5:26 I say "Lens" and I meant "Filter" most of you probably knew that but I wanted to clarify.

Thanks for the content! I’ve been looking at getting one of these filters. Which do you suggest for shooting video? I’ve been thinking about going 1/4 because it seems like the 1/8 might be too subtle for me. I’ve never used one but at 100 dollars or more for the 82mm size that I’ll purchase I don’t want to have to buy twice. Thoughts?

Apparently Tiffen made the different Black Pro-mist filters for different focal lengths. I saved this comment from another video. It might be useful for some: A common formula for using Pro-mist Filters is 1/2 Pro-mist for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 Pro-mist for 25mm - 35mm lenses, and 1/8 for 50mm and above.

Learned this from Vuhlandes awhile ago and I’ve never looked back. I keep a 1/4 BPM on for photography at almost all times it makes for beautiful softer images but not in a bad way, still very sharp too if that makes sense. It’s adding a little extra magic for sure!

I feel like most photographers forgot about diffusion filters when they transitioned from film to digital. I used to use them all the time when I shot film back in the day. I almost always use a Promist 1/4 strength on an X100F.

I’ve owned and used a Black Mist for a while for both video and landscape photography. For photos, anytime you have hazy, soft light, it really helps bloom the light, similar to adding negative Dehaze in Lightroom. I got in the habit of shooting photos with and without the filter just to make sure I get proper coverage.

I've been using a Black Pro Mist 1/4th for about a year for photography and video, and the effect is just 😍. The only downside is when you are filming directly at the sun, the halation is often too strong even with a 1/4th strength ^^, or sometimes you lose too much contrast and the image becomes quite unusable. I do love the look and feel it gives to my content 👌.

The glow is called “halation” they’re very good. However, pro mists and glimmer glass can have gross looking bokeh when you have large bokeh shooting wide open. I personally like pearlescent filters because it basically does the same as the pro mists for the halation, contrast reduction and skin softening without messing with the bokeh.

Hey Evan! Nice video again. I‘m watching your RU-vid vids for a while now and I can really see a progress in the overall structure, b-rolls and just the whole concepts of your videos. But one thing you always do, maybe it‘s just a personal feeling; but if you want to show like a comparison or just a simple image you‘ve taken it‘s always like a blink of an eye and it‘s gone. For example in this video I would have loved to see the picture of the neon sign maybe in splitscreen, maybe in slideover or something like that or just 3 seconds longer each. I hope you get what I‘m saying. Last but not least, I love the style of your pictures. Not just the composing and the theme, but the whole edit. I can‘t even describe. They don‘t look like typical Instagram shots you see, they have a persona. I always know: that‘s a Ranft haha. I hope one day I‘ll shoot and edit in my own style on the level you do sir. Cheers from Germany 🙌📸

I got a few vintage lenses, so the 1/8th strength would be good given the lenses of mine already get a decent amount of bloom. I really am curious to just how much a 1/8 filter would soften the falloff of the bloom, since they tend to bloom much harder than modern lenses. If I had more modern glass, I'd probably roll with 1/4th strength

Thanks for the great video. I have recently purchased Freewells 1/4 Glow Mist filter which should be very similar. I tried it on a shoot with my 85 prime which is extremely sharp. I had the subject back lit and used a flash at 1/250th shutter speed. I thought the images looked great in camera but when I got to the PC they are WAY too soft. My subjects faces and eyes look like they were taken with a shutter speed that was too slow. I ended up using Topaz sharpen to get usuable images. What are the key's to using this to get the extra softeness but not to ruin the shot? I'm now scared to try it again. This was not a paid shoot or I wouldn't have gambled on it.
