It was like a dream, and I was shocked by the game's new mechanics. and the beauty of LC (NYC), night lighting. explosions, weapons, aiming, weather... I fell in love with GTA4 to this day. Rockstar knew how to capture NYC's vibe. LORD ALMIGHTY ROCKSTAR.
As someone coming from the same part of Europe as him, I can confirm that they also "tricked" many older guys into killing their friends, neighbours and sometimes even relatives, most of them unarmed civilians. People from the Balkans have to be some of the dumbest and most evil ones in the whole world.
@@elvis1745 Dont talk about your region like that, sure it had a dark history but you guys should work on how to fix and establish good relationships with your neighbor countries.
Yeah and the way they took the hit how they always went into euhporia physics dolls. Also if they dropped the gun and it would shoot was/still is an interesting mechanism they should def bring back if gta 6 ever comes out.
Brooo yes there was this one area that has like a small parking lot. Block the alley with a car blow it up and you could survive hours, the bodies and exploded vehicles will pile up, loved seeing the chubby cops tumbling over while wincing in pain calling for more back up
Gta 4 was so ahead of its time, even if they release it on 2021 with slightly polished graphics like we seen with mods I would've believed it as new games. The mechanics, the physics, the feel about the game.... Can't believe this game was out back in 2008
Let's talk about that soundtrack. My goodness, you get a buffet of whatever you wanted - that Chet Baker jazz, Don Omar reggaeton, Kanye and Nas on the mix, some Bad Brains and AC/DC, Black Devil Disco Club, Lonnie Liston Smith groove, Bob Marley, Isley Brothers, so much more. Finely crafted music. One of Rockstars best productions to date.
I appreciate all the gta soundtracks and how well they've fit each game but 9 times out of 10 I'm always listening to the ridiculously hilarious talk shows. That shit has me in tears. Lazlow going around the city live on his show arguing with hot dog vendors. The funniest shit ever.
To be honest, in GTA IV, I was always listening to Vladivostok fm. The fact that there are Eastern European songs in a GTA is pretty unique, and that's something that we only see in GTA IV. Also, there are some real bangers on that radio.
Yea, I love the varied feel of the cars and how they sway and swing and curb and have inertion and so forth. - Including the fact that Niko could just blast through the windshield would you hit something head-on. - I would even mess with an editor to tweak cars to "realistic" speeds and weights even more. Which took forever, I felt more like a developer because it's such a task, but I don't know, I enjoyed it because it was capable of doing that. - I would also throw in things like a "seatbelt"-mod, a mod that would damage your health when hitting things with a car at a certain speed, a "gasoline"-mod, dis-allow poles to be just detached from the ground, a "traffic rules" mod that would have police respond to speeding and running red lights, and more stuff, so that it would actually feel like you'd have to be more careful while driving, rather than just going crazy like a videogame-maniac. - I mean, it might sound lame and tedious, but cause and effect is what creates gameplay. - I know most people just want to go nuts and blow everything up in God MOde, but you can do that too... If I want to do that I'll play "Just Cause" or something.
@@michaelmonstar4276 oh man, I'd love to replay gta4 again with those mods, I'm not sure how I'd get them to work on a ps3 tho coz I'm guessing those are for pc xD
@@keen283 unless you are a good driver lol, I found on GTA 4s driving near impossible but with practice, I barely crash, I once went around the whole GTA 5 map at full speed in a zentorno without crashing so I think it would not be that hard unless you are really bad...
@@keen283 you clearly care because you responded to me :) and you didn't ask? I did not know the world revolved around you, next time I will make sure I have your permission when I want to say something
GTA 4 was the best game in the series for me. Everything was just so great, the story was by far the most binge worthy narrative of every GTA game released so far.
I’ve really wanted gta 5 to bring in some of those similar elements from gta 4 and that gritty feeling is what gave this game its engaging atmosphere and it being dark as shit really nails just exactly how mature this type of game should be
@@NoMoreLies365 I mean... GTA V sort of is the HD version of San Andreas. After CJ gets kicked out of Los Santos he practically turns into a government agent and does these batshit crazy missions like robbing the military, breaking into Area 51 to steal a jetpack, jumping out of the back of cargo jets. GTA V/San Andreas are both really actiony hollywood-esque games.
Gta 4 is one of the masterpieces out there that with little tweaking it outshines gta 5. Vehicle physics feels heavy. Remaster version if it happens, will be a hit
As a latino that has never had the opportunity to take a single step in the US, I've always dreamed about living the whole NY lifestyle type of thing. This game is the closest I've had and it really was a joy on its own, I could literally just pass hours exploring every corner of Liberty City and never get bored. It's sad that GTA IV never had the recognition it deserved as gamers at the time just wanted an all around insane sandbox type of GTA after San Andreas.
@@Florida_Cracker Diversity and high crime rates aren't related? High population density, yes. The fact that the people are diverse isn't what causes the crime.
@@Presuroso that looks good on paper but it will make games very difficult for an average player . Don't mind me but this is more like a feature for horror games 👍🏻
THE FIGHTING was amazing in this game, the fact people stayed on the door handle if you drove off 🤣, the shimmying on ledges, it felt so real, even getting other people arrested
This game and the expansions are my favorite. All of this came out while I was in college and man, the physics were so fun. And I loved the story. Expansion packs were amazing. I can’t express it enough. GTA V didn’t even come close to this gem.
GTA V was the age of 8 year old kids buying this game only for road rage and the Vanilla Unicorn, GTA IV however was way better, ask anyone but an 8 year old and they may say Grand Theft Auto 4 is the best GTA game
I really love the driving in gta 4 theres a big learning curve but once you get the corners down and how the weight gets thrown around then the driving becomes really fun and makes gta v feel more arcade like
@@shrimpony even though it does anecdotaly it seems like GTA V, SA and even VC got more recognition over time. However I appreciate that in the last few years people started to appreciate GTA IV too.
Not trying to be that guy, but 4 has always been my favorite. The game feels so gritty and more realistic than all the others, and the story was the best in my opinion as well.
Honestly the only thing I've changed with mods to this day is just updating graphics and making it more colorful in the right ways, aka less brown filtered but still dark
I seem to be one of the few people who think that while the story was the best story GTA ever had, it didn´t fit the game so well... I mean you play as a guy who just came out of a war and is sick and tired of killing people while at the same time you just become a sociopatic maniac in free roam. OBVIOUSLY you need to have that ability in GTA but it really conflicts with the story that´s being told.
Back in the day where those same kids who would scream never get a chance to grow up years later to hear new kids screaming. Unlike today where GTA V been out so long since 2013 that kids grew up to hear new kids. Amazing
GTA 4 is definitely my favorite. Just the core game alone. I wanted to hear every conversation. Getting friends and GF's drunk. Drunk driving them home sometimes killing them or us. Then the drive of shame picking them up at the hospital. Just some of the craziest single player moments. I really loved the world and cast. Pool with jacob, strip club with brucie or roman. The dates. Even the emails. I would read them all. It was just really hitting everything. I remember when the DLC's dropped and it was so exciting, it was like getting a new GTA. GTAv's world was fantastic but it felt pretty hollow character wise in comparison. Also The driving in 4 was really fun after the learning curve. They need a middle ground between IV and V for driving. I definitely understand why people do not like 4's driving. But 5's is just to much. Also I do not get why they toned down the physics. Man 4 had the most fun physics.
I loved GTA 4. Probably my favourite. It’s the one in the series I replayed the most. It was the most immersive game I had played since Shenmue where I felt like I was actually in New York. I used the subway, did the activities with Niko’s friends, took Niko on dates. Loved it. Loved the music, the AI and physics which were better than those found in GTA5 in my opinion, good example being how police and pedestrians react to you as the player. Cops will open fire on you in GTA5 just for looking at them for too long or standing too close and pedestrians will die with one punch😂. In GTA4 police shoot as a last resort and pedestrians actually fight back and will in some cases run away, either way they didn’t die after one punch or a push to the ground.
my favorite thing about gta 4 was how realistic the driving felt. The cars felt like they had real weight and traction, something later games took away. I imagine it got complained about a lot, but me and my brother were both getting our license shortly after playing gta 4 and both attribute a lot of our ease to it to this game. GTA 4 truly taught me how to drive not even lying. I do also love the look of the city, and there is still a lot to be discovered in liberty city. I went back and played it recently and found stuff i never knew about. I wish they would port it to the nintendo switch. what a perfect place for this game that would be.
I totally agree I still play gta 4 and both the endings are heartbreaking and if you focus on the story than you will understand that Niko don't want to be a successful criminal like other protagonist in previous gta games. And niko is funny as hell.
Facts forever💯 Realistic story with better characters > Get rich af stealing banks. Ppl still calling this game sad and boring, but for me is the best GTA Ever + EFLC DLCs. San Andreas is 2nd and V (online garbage) 3rd. Peace
A small but noticeable detail was the fact that if it rained, Niko actually reacted to it. He would hold his hand out to feel if it was raining. He would shake himself off if he got too wet. You could also see his breath during the cold spells. One thing I didn't like was the fact that you couldn't take Niko to the bathroom to bathe (the scurvy bastard Lol. Jk) I also liked how you could be whoever you wanted to be.... From a Taxi Driver, to a homicidal maniac, to stopping by Perseus for an all black suit; spawn a FIB Buffalo; and become a tough-as-nails LCPD detective to whom cleans up the mean streets. So immersive is GTAIV, that it always holds a special place in my heart. Worth its weight in gold. Except for those immersive-breaking annoying friend requests. Especially in inopportune situations.... "Niko, it's your cousin; want to go get drunk together?" "I can't right now cousin as I'm strapped to almost a thousand pounds of explosives right now". "Wait... What the fuck?!!! JESUS CHRIST NIKO!!!".
I preferred GTA 4 to 5, not only because of the story, but also the feel and the setting. And the motorcycles in GTA 4 behave more like a motorcycle should compared to GTA 5, that always bugged me as a biker myself
they wouldnt and for good reason beyond what they'd probably claim. they'd straight fuck it up tho trying to modernize the game so I say rip to a classic.
it's still a masterpiece. i recently replayed the whole gta 4 trilogy of games again on xbox back compat and it feels like if it was released in 8th gen it would be one of the best games of the entire gen. absolute masterpiece of a game.
Dude, how?! Niko is such a likable character and the story is so immersive. I hope Niko and Liberty city make a comeback someday. Three leaf clover is my favorite mission out of all GTA games.
That was the worst. I stopped playing this game because the npcs would not leave me alone! Lol. I don’t want to go bowling again, I want to cause some chaos Roman!
I was amazed by the CITY. One of the first things I did was to get on the subway and rode it all the way around the map, just marveling at the detail and the fact that the subway/train was actually REAL. It wasn’t just something that popped up in the background as “ambiance”. I was really impressed with that. I even took full cab rides a few times.
GTa 4 is definitely far from under rated. It was a huge deal when it came out, and people still talk about it. It stikes me as odd to straight up make it seem like this one is forgotten, when it genuinely isn't.
@@tn420animations9 no one complained about the tone, it's the driving that mostly got hit but once people got the hang of it, it became an instant classic
Yeah no, I usually like games to escape reality, eastern european mentality and grey buildings everywhere. If you want a more serious darker tone just go out and try life and keep that shit away from my games
And not filled with repetitive heist... The amount of heist on GTA5 is what gave it the boring vibe for me. I'm being true rn, I'd always choose the character development and story development of GTA4 over GTA5, plus they didn't focus on heists, "Three leaf clover" is the only heist if remember correctly.
@@iangarcia2708 gta 4 : 🤢🤢 GTA 5 : 😎💸💸💳💰🔪 Hold up wait a minute something ain't right i think somethings wrong here but can't put my finger on it 🤔 This is a joke gta 4 better duh 🙄
@@GingerKwyjibo They were more realistic. GTA V's were "Arcaded" to make the game feel more accessible. Example, Who tf has perfect aim with a sniper irl while literally running?
@@S1lverArr0w I didn't like GTA IV for exactly that reason, I wasn't a fan of the realistic approach. Realism has never been a hallmark of what makes a great GTA game, I think that's the reason why GTA IV is more often forgotten than its prequels and its sequel. I remember having more fun with Saint's Row 2 than I did with GTA IV, SR2 felt more like a GTA game than GTA IV did.
I think Niko is the most relatable GTA protagonist. His emotions felt like a real person going through the same thing. This is one of the best stories in a video game.
Even if this video was five times as long as it really is I still would have stuck around and enjoyed every minute, it was really cool to just take a walk and listen to this in the background and go down memory lane.
My favorite GTA 4 review, hands down. & I’m so glad you brought up the likeness of LC to NYC. Ofc I knew it was not exact in detail but I was always fascinated
GTA IV will always be my favourite even if I grew up on 3 and Vice City The expansions were also just as memorable As someone who’s parents moved from Yugoslavia during the war time is another reason why I love Niko, I grew up around adults like Niko
Well, they follow the "logic" of cynicism and satire. Things like common (mis)conceptions and stereotypes, which they parody. They don't think that themselves; They use what people think places and people are like from the outside, and then magnify it. Pretty clever concept... Made them billions...
@@scottwilliams645 Hopefully set in the '90s, you're a troubled Texas Ranger, the tone would be between bright, dreary, and gritty all in one. I'd love to see a protagonist that's a cop/lawman, and you choose a good or bad path. Call me a fanatic of Walker, Texas Ranger, but I think that's the only route to go for one set in Texas.
Awesome tribute to my favourite GTA. Thank you. Researching the game during the months leading up to it’s release, it was the fact that we could hail a taxi and tell the driver to take us anywhere that got me excited.
I forgot how good this game was until I played it recently, love the feel and setting in new York. There's just so many games out there that even one as good as this just gets forgotten in the sea of games
same 5 days ago came back to gta4 after 11 years, if u asked me that day which gta was the best id go for gta5 no doubt, now 5 days later and 20h into the game. im worrying that ill never come back to gta5 cuz it feels like empty shell of gta4
@OGSTICKYICKY yeah maybe, i once lassoed a guy but then he suddently pulls the trigger and shot his own chin xD, i also thinks the Gore system is the best along with max Payne 3 compared to other rockstar games
Me too. IV has a better story, but that's just an opinion. Mostly, the physics of cars and npcs where better. The police is also better in its own way, the gunplay is better imo also. GTAV made some improvements, but it's a step back on the "fun aspect" of GTA. It's difficult to explain, I guess...
In many ways 5 is to 4 what LA is to New York. It’s bright, it’s polished, it’s attractive but doesn’t have heart. GTA 4 was dirty, hard and was an incredible step up from the previous PS2 era. GTA5 felt like a step back, I also feel 5 was just much more mainstream, the audience was much younger and less die hard. That’s my opinion anyway.
I feel it's mainly because of the rhythm, imo 5 has screwed it by making the map too big but haven't adjusted quests accordingly, in fact they remove the more relaxing part of the game make it even worse to me.
6:15 Luiz Lopez is on the floor of the bank during the heist mission. id say he is the most underated gta character. a real badass but kept his cool all the time.
One of my favorite things about GTA IV was getting lost in the internet in those internet cafe's. They had some bizarre and interesting reads within the websites they created within game
It's not brought up very often when discussing GTA these days, at least not since V came out. There's plenty of gushing over III for reinventing the open world genre, Vice City and especially San Andreas for childhood nostalgia, and V as the current game that's still actively supported by Rockstar. IV also gets a lot of shit by certain fans who think it takes itself too seriously which goes against their perception of what GTA is, and that playing a character who ultimately wants to do good conflicts with their capacity to go on crazy murder rampages. That said I think that's set to change very soon once more people remember just how great a game it was.
@@bendover2649 I don't know what places or forums you stick around. GTA 4 is a fan favorite together with San Andreas. The fact that GTA 5 is the only one discussed by children for whom it was their first GTA doesn't mean anything.

Yeah I couldn’t give two shits about 90% of San Andreas characters/story and especially Franklin in GTA5 complete waste of potential nobody wants to live the hood life I’m sorry but that’s not what I buy these games for. I buy them to be the biggest in town the richest, the baddest whatever I want to do and be. Not some kid making it out of the hood killing people that’s the opposite of what I want.
@@SubZyYT you do you fam but GTA San Andreas had one of the better stories in the GTA games and it's what sold the game overall. In GTA 5, Franklin was wasted and could have had more missions with Lamar as a nod to San Andreas but they didn't do it for some reason. If you want to be the richest and baddest in town go play multiplayer for any of the games
@@anattackhelicopter2680 true, I just said a few more missions as a nod, since he's not the only character in the game. Personally I think GTA 5 has a pretty good interweaving story for a game with 3 fully playable characters
I remember playing it when it came out for the first time in middle school and man... coming from San Andreas graphics to gta iv felt truly next gen. Easily dumped hundreds if not thousands of hours of my childhood into this game either playing it or modding it. Thank you R* for going out on a limb and giving us this masterpiece.
Best setting and time period: Vice City Best and most diverse missions: San Andreas Best story, vibe, and protagonist: GTA 4 Best gameplay and graphics: GTA 5
The first time I saw my friend play this game he squashed a npc underneath his car after hitting one of the stunt jumps from that point on I knew this was going to be my favorite game of all time. The rag doll psychics are just fantastic.
This video gave me more appreciation for GTA IV than I already have not to mention a little crossovers they had with each other throughout different parts of the story in their own way
