Gorgeous car. As a child we'd take trips to the continent passing through France, Switzerland through the famous Mont Blanc tunnel and into our beloved Italy. One such year we were on the Autostrada when one of these was coming up fast in the outside lane with the headlights flashing. A moment I'll never forget.

I happened to be in my local Ferrari AD in Melbourne today and what was in the workshop.. an immaculate original 365BB. RHD too. Dark green over tan interior. Fabulous.. and right next to it was a Rosso Corsa 512BB. Also RHD and immaculate. 2 in one day.. and then I saw a gorgeous 275GTS for sale in Duttons Garage for sale. Only in Melbourne.

At 10% for most car loans, the car will need roughly £20k per year before the usual running costs. This is a very good news, as this will greatly diminish the financial appeal cars used to have when borrowing costs were very low. They will become driving machines again and since prices are dropping, better use them then.

though colloquially known as a berlinetta boxer, the engine is not a boxer but a flat-12. the pistons do not "box" each other in the firing order; it's a v12 splayed out 180-degrees. the 512BB, in all its iterations, is a beautiful car. much more elegant and timeless than either the countach or the testarossa that replaced it. congrats for getting to experience one!

For Christmas in 1984 I received a book about Ferrari by Godfrey Eaton. On the cover was a photo of a 512BB in dark blue. To my eyes it was one of the most beautiful cars in the world. I still love it. Sammy Hagar drove a black one in “I can’t drive 55”. I mostly liked the beginning of the video when the car was briefly driven. Looked good in black too in his video, but I’ve always wanted one in blue. I found a blue 512BB that was sold online and it was in blue. I think it was blu Sera or blu Chairo. Maybe they are the same color? The car in the book looks to entirely in blue, without the black trim on the bottom of the car.

Always loved the 512BB. I remember when it was the fastest production car. Technically not a boxer engine, BTW. It was basically a 180 degrees V12. The crankshaft worked like a V engine, not opposing firing like Porsche boxer engine. But it was a derivative of their racing 12 cylinder engines. The price is lowish because maintenance is killer expensive. $25,000+ engine out procedure to replace sparkplugs and such.

I love mid engines super cars and this was my childhood poster car. I found the testarossa a bit crude in its looks. Others I loved were the pantera, stratos, 308 GT4 and a lot later, the Audi R8

I love it, was lucky enough to drive one once, but despite the BB name, it is not a true Boxer engine, even though its a Flat 12. Boxer engines like the Porsche, air cooled VWs and Subarus have opposing pistons that go in and out at the same time, helping to cancel vibration. But for a 12 cylinder engine this would make for an extremely over complicated crank shaft. And I am pretty sure Porsche tried to make a true Boxer 12 engine for a race car and decided the simple Flat 12 was superior. Doesn't take away from what an excellent car the 512 is, just a piece of car nerd history.

I don't believe the 308GTB styling was a result of the 512BB mate. The 308 was a derivative of the Dino 246GT which was Ferrari's first mid-engined road car. The first mid-engined 12 cylinder road car was the 365BB which replaced the 365GTB/4 (Daytona). Rather, the styling of the 365BB was new, and it morphed into the 512BB, Testarossa, 512TR and F512M.

One of my top two dream cars, vying for the no. 1 spot alongside the original Countach LP400 and just beating the 308 GTB and the Esprit S1 (my top 10 also includes the BMW M1, Maserati Bora, Urracco P300, Honda NSX, F355 GTB and Ford GT). This and the 308 GTB are Fioravanti's masterpieces and to my eyes the most beautiful Ferraris ever. I am not saying the Miura is not a gorgeous car, but I think the BB is better looking and still looks modern, whereas the Miura's proportions and design language date it to the mid 60s. I can understand why they had to go to fuel injection with the BBi but I think they also compromised the looks slightly, by exposing the fog lights and adding extra indicators above the grille. Still, that was not as bad as the corruption of the 308 shape with the ugly nose job they gave the 288 GTO or the even worse treatment they gave the 328. I know the BBs' successor, the Testarossa is easier to drive (and in 512TR form a genuinely good handling and good looking car), but if I ever win the lottery I'm getting a carburettored 512BB, or possibly the wilder 365 BB, though I would miss the NACA ducts... Oh and I think LHD makes more sense: I'm sure the pedal offset is still terrible but not as bad and the gearlever is on the correct side of the centre console relative to the driver. Crazy to think these cars could be bought for around £35k in the late 90s/early 00s. I could see they were undervalued even then, but given I did not enter gainful enmployment until the mid-2000s all I could do was watch the ship sail away...

Behave yourself. No 512BB ever went anywhere close to 188mph. 174mph was the highest one was ever recorded at I believe. Where did you get 188 from? I know you have to be nice to the seller but come on. Most on here will have shaken their heads at that one...

Well, the Countach is nicer, there is no debate! 😀 Too much wheel gap. Rear end is too short or front end too long. There is an unbalance. Engine deck lid not well integrated to the rest of body … C pillar has something … A nice car, but not great. But the 512 BB is a very interesting machine. To each their own …
