Kind of reminds me of the photographer (or potentially more) having taken a front-and-center snap shot of the Elephant's Foot in Chernobyl, where standing in any close proximity to it to this day is sudden death. Just something about people dying for their art or job that gets at me.

​@@Hm-qd9loThat guy actually only just passed away in 2022. The famous picture was taken back in 1996 when the radiation was no longer strong enough to kill you just from a short exposure. His name was Artur Korneyev. He was the deputy director of the shelter object, which is the official name for the "sarcophagus". Having first arrived shortly after the disaster. He was known to just not give a single F about radiation. As a liquidator in the days after the disaster, he was known to simply walk up to chunks of graphite and solid fuel from the core and straight up just kick them out of the way. He probably went inside the wreckage of unit 4 more than anyone else in history. He ventured in many times to take measurements, and Escort journalists around to try and spread awareness of the danger of the old containment falling apart. His efforts were a big part in making the NSC or new safe containment possible The big arch shaped building they constructed and then slid over the old containment. There isn't a ton of information available about him in his later years. But he was still working there in his 60s in like 2016. Although he had developed some health problems from the sheer amount of radiation he was exposed to. Keep in mind he worked around that place for around 30 years. He was probably in his late 60s/early 70s when he died. But still... THIRTY YEARS of being right there at chernobyl. He was also known for having a dark sense of humor and used to tell journalists as a joke “Soviet radiation, is the best radiation in the world.” pretty badass dude. It's too bad more people don't know his story. The fact that he put his own health at risk fighting for what would eventually become the multi billion dollar NSC probably saved a lot of people from serious health problems down the road. The old sarcophagus was in terrible shape. Being constructed quickly in the very high radiation environment shortly after the accident. It was never intended to be permanent. But with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the funding for upkeep or to replace it just wasn't there. If that thing had collapsed it would have released all manner of contamination and dust and just overall bad shite into the environment. The fact that his photos and work with journalists were so shocking was a big part of making it possible to get the money and multi-national cooperation to prevent that from happening.

One is taken just as it comes out of the volcano. One is taken while it's perhaps a mile or two away. In the last one, it takes up more than four-fifths of the frame. Each picture is progressively more damaged due to heat and ash.

@@Hm-qd9lo Apparently that's inaccurate and it's lost a fair amount of radioactivity, to the point where you could stand next to it for maybe a half hour before getting a lethal radiation dose. Even if that's true I still wouldn't risk it myself.

( visual flight rules ) certification but not instrument rated , then on top of it all the storm that was pounding the area , seems as though any level headed individual would pass on that ride regardless of the advantages , peace t. d.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your mother at such a young age. I was 20 when my father died. But I lost him a year or so before his physical passing. He developed dementia as a side effect of chemo therapy and for his last year didn't recognize me. I'm 47 now, but the grief, the feeling of helplessness and the memories of that dark events are still with me today. It's beyond my imagination what you as a child must have gone through. May your wounds heal and thank you for your kind words of advice.

That was a sad story, it is one I can relate to. I nursed my mother to the end. She was a brillant artist, her works hang all around the world. She was a pioneer in her original artform, a published author and an amazing person to know. Sadly, after a major stroke in 2012, she recovered her mobility but needed a walking frame, but the damage to her brain slowly took her from us. In the end she dudn't know who I was and thought she was in hospital waiting to go home. I live with her artworks adorning the walls, like silent ghosts they all capture a moment in times past, her creative soul still lives with me. Dawn died aged 99 years, 9 months and 9 days, on October the 27th, 2021, the birthday of two of her children, who were born on the same day and month, two years apart. God Bless you Mum.😢❤❤❤😣

I hear you... The Kursk was such a haunting event that kept spiraling into the worst end for those men. My uncle served on a US Navy sub and I still remember how quiet he was when that happened. Fwiw, one of his buddies demonized the sailors because of where they were from: my uncle did not at all. One of my heroes for a few reasons. RIP to those lost.

Ritchie was 17 when he died. Buddy was 22. It blows my mind that people that young had such an impact on music today. If they had lived, I think Ritchie would have been a huge star and Buddy would have likely gone into production or formed his own record label. Both of them had so much talent. It's a shame they died so young. Rest In Peace.

There is a 1987 movie called "LaBamba" about Ritchie Valens and his start in music. The movie ends with the guys deciding who will get on the plane in the snow storm instead of freezing their asses off in the bus.
