I've just read few articles about this tank a few days ago, in Ukrainian (I'm Ukrainian). useless or not, but Kharkiv plant has an abundance of rusty T-64 hulls that were brought from the DDR in the 90s, and this "modification" or "hybrid" was a proposal to sell them for cheap to countries that operate T-55 and have a lot of 100mm ammunition stored but wanted something "better". So instead of letting them rust or scrap them, they decided to earn some money and I don't think it's a bad idea. Is it the most useless tank ever? Maybe, if you are fighting a potent enemy, but if you are fighting some dudes with jeeps and RPGs probably not. Should it be used in modern combat or in the Ukrainian army? BIG NO. Can it be useful for some poor countries like Somalia or Zimbabwe? I think so. Were the designers drunk or something like that when designing this tank? Definitely not. In fact, they were smart but misunderstood.

From the perspective of an infantry, a tank is tank. Doesn't matter how good it is fighting other tanks. As long you foot soldier with only a rifle, any tanks still will ruin your day.

"The most useless tank ever" that's quite an interesting way to put it, I mean it's not completely useless, isn't it? If you're fighting against an insurgency/guerilla/rebellion type opposition, you won't be needing the best of the best of equipments.

WTF, Pakistan bought 100 to counter insurgence. Enemy using low grade weaponry, so it make perfect sense to serve the purpose for a very low price tank. It cannot go for a tank war with more advance tank. But what is the different if compared to IFV! IFV also useless with very thin armor plate. But it serve purpose to transport troops.

ehh when you put this tank into context of the war in Ukraine it make sense in a way for them to field any tank they possibly can. also atleast its not a T-55 with era on it

That's a stadiametric rangefinder not a coincidence one. A coincidence rangefinder uses an optical device that has two periscopes in a horizontal configuration, one of the mirrors is able to rotate. The range is calculated from the angle of the mirror when the two images coincide.

I'd despute the title, The crown of worst to exsist (that wasn't a prototype) would probably go to the Marmon-Herrington CTLS and MTLS tanks. Nice vid otherwise some nice footage you found.

So the only selling point was better chassis and mobility? Well as said there are cheaper options to get a similar result, but is the T-55s mobility that bad? The chassis itself seems to be quite reliable, as it is still used today, best example probably being the IDFs Achzarit.

I was gonna compare this with Arjun but now it seems Arjun has been upgraded with LAHAT and SAMHO with 800+ mm penetration and lots of modifications. But its main gun is still poor at 500mm penetration apfsds and it still uses HESH.

What, no "love" for World War II's Matilda I? Solid if slow chassis, with good armor ... and a rinky-dink machine gun for its main (and only) armament. What's more useless than a tank that brings nothing to the party?

I mean, try the Taiwanese CM-11. They combined the M60 hull to a M48 turret. Just get a entire M60 >.> The one saving grace is the addition of a Abrams fire control system and that it is technically supposed to be an upgrade from the stock M48. But still more worthwhile just outright getting the entire M60 than half a M60. It was also somehow a work around from the one-China policy. *Shrugs*

Despite all that, the russian army is being defeated by Ukraine. Even with "useless" tanks. How bad is the russian army?

Sure they built the Sherman light for speed and maneuverability. what they ended up with was a under gunned barely armored hot rod that couldn't put a hole in a screen door that 1 guy with an RPG could take out lol

A modernized T55 can be used against soft targets and armor viachles. Pakistan bought modernized 262 T55H with Kontakt-1 ERA and 105mm gun and other upgrades not so long ago.

It’s sad they didn’t consider removing the turret and reconfiguring it to an IFV. Put a lighter gun station up top. Even use it as a basic engineering/logistics platform. Anything but an MBT role.

It doesn’t. matter how well it’s weapons can do or what armour it has but it’s shear weight sinks in the soft arable land of the Ukraine . They all become sitting ducks when bogged down , yet are vulnerable to ambush on hard roads !

From what you just said and what little I know of tank design. There may be an argument for upgrading the turrets of suitable tanks. In my study of tanks, there have been many machines with reasonably good chassics. Sure, they could have perhaps had more power. "More power, more power!" The tracks were wide enough but could have been stronger. However, generally the chassis stood up. Sadly, many of those tanks had the most pathetic turrets ever built. Why? Are the big they going to say they didn't have enough time to design or test it? Perhaps refine any problems that stood out? That would be too much logic.

I mean I see where they were coming from... Pakistan purchased a boatload of SDPR upgraded T-55's. These tanks are usually being fielded to fight insurgents, rag-tag militias or guard border posts. I don't think they were purchased with the idea of going toe to toe with and modern MBT fielded by Russia or the US...

A lot of comments about Arjun, and regurgitating the same thing. This thing is hands down worse than Arjun in every way. Arjun has a superior FCS, thermal optics, a better engine, actual composite armor and a better gun. As much as I hate Arjun, it’s actually better than this attempt at a cash grab.

What makes this funnier is that for Ukraine, it was more costly to sell this Tank EX abomination than to just sell the T-64B in their current states. Obviously they went through the trouble of having to not only swap the turret, but also had to modify things in the hull. And it's not like they had a shortage of T-64B at the time anyway, with thousands in storage from post-Soviet storage, of which the majority of them could be brought back to life with simple refurbishment. They just didn't want their customers to have good stuff, even though the T-64BV wasn't exactly cutting edge stuff either. Puzzling since they obviously didn't care about selling advanced stuff anyway. They flooded the market with T-72A/B tanks and also advanced fighters like Su-27S. Not to mention how they sold 320 T-80UDs to Pakistan at cheap prices, even though they needed to make a new (and probably better) turret for most of them. In fact, the ones with new turrets were also newly built tanks, so anyone who knew of KMDB's past deals also saw this T-64 + T-55 hybrid as a big Fuck You

It's maybe useless in modern tank battles, but give it to any militia that does not get any heavy anti tank resistance and it will still shine. Tank is still a tank after all.:-)
