Watch out fellow dentists, there's a new guitarist in town with a cheaper version of your PRS Dragon II.
I humbly submit this video on behalf of working musicians who need a versatile guitar. The PRS S2 Custom 24 can cover every base and is comfortable enough to play on stage for hours. What more could a guy want?

Good honest discussion and review. I own a PRS Custom 24 35 Anniversary. Great guitar. Played in a cover band for a few shows and then the Pandemic. The audience taught me something. As long as you are in tune and good tempo on cover songs you don’t have to be perfect. In fact you don’t have sound like the perfect Strat or Lp or Tele. Be musical with some energy and they will love you. It is versatile enough. Btw love your playing. I visit for the playing not the gear review 💪🏽

Thanks so much. And totally agree. The nitpicking happens on the small niche of detail oriented guitar players. 99% of people just want to hear a good song! And thanks for the comments on the playing. Cheers!

Well, well, well. I'm considering having a guitar built and came across these S2's, SE series from PRS. I've played a LP studio since the mid 90's and have loved her with all my heart! My dream guitar is kind of a tele shape with p90's and a nice trem (short scale neck). Higher end kit guitars and luthiers have proven to be difficult to find the right combo. I'm now considering the prs series because of the quality and "versatility" they offer. Your other pickup vids are glorious to showcase some alternatives for people! Just wanted to say thanks for the videos and tasty licks! It's nice to see someone "demo" the tones without the "look at me" deer in the headlights stare. Well done. Subscriber! Cheers!

Hi Raserex, I like that idea for a guitar! Sounds like you might have to frankenstein that one by yourself though. The new SE guitars are insanely good. Just picked up the silver sky SE and it is a monster. The new SE 594 McCartys are out of this world too. Thanks for the sub and let me know how the guitar build goes! Best, Alex

@@SuperdangerStudios So.....here we are. I ended up travelling to Sweetwater, and trying out 19 guitars. I spent the day trying out them all in my tournament of guitars! The one that I kept coming back to and held the #1 spot at the end of the day was a PRS S2 Standard 22! I ended up travelling 944 miles for this girl! I agree with you about the humbuckers after playing a couple shows. They're really laid back and have amazing character. I'll be looking for something with just a "bit" more growl though. You can see it here in a quick video I did with a couple guitar case comparisons. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ETTmCJY95BI.html . Thanks again sir for this video! Keep 'em coming! Excellent video. I always liked these, but a little out of range for me, $$ (I just play for fun, don't perform anymore) so when the SE Standard 24-08 just dropped at half the price I immediatly picked one up, and WOW!!!! If I had to go with only one guitar, this would be it! Again, thanks - great video!

I know this post is older...BUT...just wanted to add a rave and a tip regarding this model. I love my S2 CU24 but it struggled to keep up with my Strat and Les Paul onstage...in a last attempt before selling it, I decided to gut the electronics and pickups. Now with Seymour Duncans and all new hand wired CTS signal path. The phase 2 lock tuners were already great so I kept them. I may swap trem block for brass in future, but already has massive sustain. I believe it now offers me more than core models at twivce the price...and holds it own on stage. A personal favorite now.

Never bought a guitar without playing it 1st, until the pandemic, but that's how I bought my S2 35th anniversary custom 24. It played properly right out of the box, with the action, intonation etc. all spot on. A versatile guitar (also own a Gibson LP Standard, Fender HSS Strat, Godin Tele-style). I play them all, but the S2 is now my #1.

Great playing and you offer some really good perspective. I think in general most guitars have a lot of tones that owners don't know about because they don't spend the time to twist knobs and actually use the pickup selector switch. Nothing wrong with having multiple guitars but I wonder how many have dumped a guitar just from being too lazy or uninformed to actually learn what it can do?

I agree that either the S2 Custom or the PRS Custom 24 are the most versatile guitars on the earth. I play them both in both the anniversary switching config and the 5-way blade, but either way, they are incredible. I have a custom 22 as well and bought for same reason you stated but my ears could not hear it, but still an awesome guitar.. Nice playing and great content.

Well done! Great demo of an S2 and of your skills as a player, and as a player with an ear for tone. I recently bought the S2 Standard 22 (gloss) because I was looking for versatility, something American made, a good price and quality. Having owned at least 5 high end PRS guitars, I knew the neck would feel comfortable and the frets would be great. The guitar offers a lot of options and is quite resonant. The 58/15 S pickups were not bad, but I needed more warmth and output, so I installed some Don Grosh humbuckers and now a great guitar is greater. (I am a Grosh fanatic.). S2 guitars are a great buy in $1400-$1900 price range. You are also right about the 22 frets giving you more bottom end with the neck pickup. Now I need to run through your video library for more great tips and playing.
@SuperdangerStudios

@@SuperdangerStudios A friend from the Bay Area (now in Reno) told me about Grosh in 2006. He worked as a rep’ for Kaman and through his connections with store owners he got me my first Grosh. Just by taking hold of the neck when it arrived I knew it was something extraordinary. The best thing was finding out how friendly Don and everyone at his shop are. They treat you like family. That friend also sold me his '96 PRS Custom 22 back in 2001. A bargain for $1100. By the way, it was one of your videos that convinced me to purchase the Strymon Iridium. I am having a blast with it. No regrets!

Finally, a practical review from a professional gigging/session musician. Nothing wrong with being a one-person studio (I am one myself these days) but there are so many reviews from people obsessed with getting the "perfect" sound from 100 different pieces of gear in a super controlled environment. Touring as a hired gun is a vastly different situation. Edit: and holy shit that playing! We're not worthy, we are not worthy, we are not worthy...

PRS guitars are versatile because you can play slower genres and you can also shred on them. Not the fastest neck but they're decent for metal. Pickups are great for both distortion and clean. I've owned 3 of them so far and I've always loved them.

I agree the S2 line is awesome. I’m waiting to get a replacement for my CU24 because of weird nitro cracking (not checking) that happened all over the body in a matter of weeks after only a year and a half of ownership (22 production model) but I also have a single cut s2 McCarty and a thinline s2 McCarty. I love them all, they’re great guitars. I probably only really need the cu24 or the thinline in reality but whatever. You’re right, they don’t completely nail specific guitar tones to a T but it’s pretty cool to have one that convincingly does basically any sound you could want.

I have an older (2014) S2 Custom 24. It is versatile and close enough just as you say. I too thought I should have gotten a 22, but one decision per subject, the 24 is the electric that sits in the stand. BTW I think this has split, not tapped. I get a fair amount of hum when I split the coils.

OK on the country tone thing example, the PRS sounds more stratty than tele.....a middle position in a true tele pickup config sounds way different than a 2 position on a three single strat...strat is more quacky in my opinion...tele is more...how do I put it in words?...more bitey and way less quacky....the PRS in the mid position tapped on both is more quacky than a tele, and less quacky than a strat, and has a mid range smoothness IMO than neither a strat or a tele has...on the rock tone example the S2 has more clarity than the 245 PRS to my ears...I'm watching this because I found this S2 custom 24 for $999, but it's the model before yours that has the coil splits done by a push pull tone knob, so it doesn't have quite the tonal versatility yours does, but IMO, all the important tones are there with it, and I guess it could be modded for a price to be exactly like yours with the mini toggles...thanks for posting this!

haha I love your comparisons Rob and I totally agree. The Custom24 does a lot of things but not nearly as close as the original sound but also has a very unique sound profile. As for the 35th anniversary model I would say I hardly use the mini toggles for one single one humbucker in the middle position. Good eye! This is actually the Custom 24 35th anniversary edition which preceded the 24-08 moniker although its all the same on the inside. Same switching, same pickups, same electronics. But different finishes and different neck shape. Looking back I probably just needed a normal Custom 22 or even the old standard 22. Ah well. Next time.

At the time when I bought this guitar it was called the custom 24 45th anniversary edition. Then that sold so well they turned it into the 24-08 that is in production today. Although the only real difference is the pickup options in the middle positions. Everything else is mirrored across the custom 24/22 line. Cheers!

I hear that. The SE 24-08 is a great deal and sounds pretty identical. I got this one on a deal but if I had to do it again I would probably get an SE. The necks on the new 24-08s are much beefier and feel a bit better in the hand. I agree, when they are too thin it really isnt very comfortable.

Hey Adam, so sorry to hear that! I have noticed that certain PRS pickups arent to my liking at times when trying them out at the store. Have you tried raising the pickup height? Comes in at just over 7 lbs and has sustain for days when unplugged. Agree with volume knob. Trying to figure out how to play it without hitting it.

Also a sustainer on neck pickup and piezo on the bridge. You may find Hong Kong singer called Eason Chan’s live show. If you see a guitarist using a Flying V share guitar that is him.👍🏻
