Great tip, Matt! You're giving out great secret tips lately. An inline spinner always gets my attention. I do the same to repurpose those and even buy new ones to alter. Last year I bought some Blue Fox Super Vibrax inline spinners (#3 to #5) to use as upfront weights/spinners for worm harnesses to walleye fish out in Lake Erie. When the water is dirty, it's like ringing a dinner bell for the fish. For some reason, I've learned that the longer French spinner blade works better early in the season. Great content, as always!

This is why I'm a fan of your channel. Reinventing old ideas to meet current needs. Long story short; in-lines, spoons, and poppers have been successful for many years. Make them a little better with modern plastics and hardware, and what's Rick Flair say..."WHOOO"!

First! I love my Mepps spinners more than any other lure. That looks like a better version of the Comet Combo. You have outdone yourself! I have 5 Black Furys and an Agila this needs to be done on ASAP!

I live in Florida and have seen a few different versions of this modification - we were trying to keep it on the down low. Sally’s have always been popular but we don’t like the one you show in this video- we prefer what we call “ The North Alabama Sally”. It doesn’t have the beads but a single weight so it comes through vegetation a lot better. People don’t realize how popular Sally’s were in mid to north Alabama. They make a EXCELLENT inline spinner bait you can buy around the Cullman area called a “Weeping Willow “. I remember one tournament back in the 90’s on Pickwick where Jamie Horton and myself watched a older gentleman wear us out throwing a Sally. I’ve never left mine home since that day.

Thanks for sharing Matt.Dont forget a small swivel on that to prevent line twist .I use a split ring attached to barrel swivel right to the lure .I also go with that on my topwater whopper ploppers which also cause a lot of line twist.Good luck down there.

Years ago In Fisherman magazine had a technique like this using Erie Dearies, replacing the hook and then using a live minnow threaded on the hook. It worked in cover.and believe it or not more open water. This is better with the Fusion hook and plastics. May rig up some of my old Erie Dearies with this hook and plastics. Thanks for the tip.

That’s a super cool innovation! I was raised a trout fisherman in the crystal clear streams and lakes of the far northern Sierra Nevada Mts. The first bass I ever caught was in 1976 on a #2 Mepps Comet that comes with the little trout looking swimbait on the treble! I started bass fishing with it in the silver and did great but due to that treble, I had to keep it just outside the weed line where the bass would ambush it. This creation of yours would kill it in the tules. Now I’ve got to pull out all my trout spinners and get to work. 😃👍🏼👍🏼

So the key hack on both of those baits is replacing the treble with the swimbait hook? Powerbait also makes a little higher end swimbait that comes in dift forage...bluegill perch etc with eyes. The name escapes me but they are pretty firm. Maybe overkill fishing thru slop and the grass pig is cheaper. Just a thought. I have a bunch. I'm excited about this one. My premium payment got declined but I'll fix it tonight. Thx Matt!

I love spinners so much that I bought a wire bender. I bought the Dubro bucktail version for pike and musky bucktails but there are many reasonably priced benders out there. You can even get a pair of round-nose pliers to start the loop and finish twisting it around a nail. Jann's Netcraft has some cheaper benders but I think they're limited to wire under 0.040".

I like it. I made up a spinner almost exactly like that on the St. John’s a few years ago. Had a machete blade by luhr Jensen. Gambler makes a spinner bait with smaller blade versions. Long story short. Outgoing small feeder creek. Tossed in the mouth there and got hooked decent with a giant. Ole head shake got me again. I did realize though why they put a treble hook on the original. Smaller version like yours will prob work great for numbers I would think.

I was doing some field testing for Mepp's in the early 1970s. I cut the treble from a #4 Comet, replaced it with a straight shank hook, then texas-rigged a 3 inch grub making the spinner snag-less. The fledgling Maryland Bass Federation printed and article I wrote about it which I sent to Mepp's. The very next year Mepp's sold a lure using my concept, however, their lure featured the brand new worm hook that had a barbed wire extending from the hook eye. The grub head was threaded on the wire enabling it to be texas-rigged. Like you, I still use Mepp's and Snagless Sally lures. I remove the hooks, replace them with a keel weighted swim bait hook and a paddle tail swim bait. What do they say about "great minds"?

I've built many of those, even double bladed. Last built was a Rapala Elite CD with a metallic lip....before that a Yo-Zuri Bean with a ball weight at bottom...the weight is to keep the Bean from blowing out....and a swing jig/chatter with direct blade to swing jighead (no split ring in between).

Like it, I know most spinners use a Indiana type blade,I make my own spinners and use the Colorado blade if I want to keep lure running high,I'm going to use your modification and make some different sizes to match the size of the swimbaits

They work great!! If you need more flash cut the tail of the swim bait off use a screw lock and another blade.

I like that. I bet the smaller blade makes that thing where you can fish it more effective without blow outs. Thank you.

Love the value and new look creation for pressured water. For me it seems anything not perfectly symmetrical results in nasty line twists. Are you fishing them on a bait caster?

My son has great success with spinners, but all I seem to do is get snagged on rocks. So this tip might help me out. Thanks.

Consider using a keel weighted swim bait hook without the inline spinner weighted body. This should conceivable eliminate line twist. May still need some spacer to keep the blade free from the nose of the bait. Great content as always. Thank you Matt.

yep that works great

We started doing that with the old purple card meps as you could change out the hooks on those. Then they stopped making them that way. I think because every once in a while a northern would get the body to ride up and unlatch the hook. I personally prefer a ewg hook over a spring lock type. Seems like I have fewer problems with the bait snagging on vegetation.

TW has the Bronze Slammer in 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2 weights but doesn’t list blade size. So, you mentioned a 3 and a 5 sized blade. Which weights are those? Can’t wait to try this on a Gambler EZ swimmer-my fav bait for running along weed lanes. With this set-up, looks like I can drop it right into and through the weeds and get even closer to the biguns. Great stuff as always, Matt! (And good on ya to give mention to RI skinny dipper, another fav of mine for these kinds of applications.)

3 is the 1/2 oz and 5 is the 1/2 oz

Will try it when I get a chance, which won't be until June, because of our regulations for open bass season

Good luck finding them but if you can, terminator in line spinners with titanium wire are awesome because the wire don't bend.

Don't forget in-line buzz baits up top. You may have to make your own now days. A light keel weighted hook may help resist twist? Your thoughts? Is it worth, does the blade introduce enough torque to spin the bait or no advantage? All the best

Exactly what I did, just about a month ago. Haven't been able to throw it, yet, but I'm confident that it'll do well. Side Note: The Bronze Slammer really isn't anything new by Mepps. They have been essentially been selling these for years, as just an inline spinner. I couldn't find any Slammers, locally, but immediately recognized it at a Dick's Sporting Goods store, as just a general inline spinner. At best, they changed some of the coloring on the blade. So, really, It's just a remarketing.

Hey Matt, do you use a swivel? I fish big Rooster Tailsa for smallies often but get a lot of line twist unless I use a swivel. Thanks!
