Outstanding job on one of the best 1 minute shorts I've seen in a long time. My favorite part is the patience and timing of the shots. I heard this was made on the A7iii. I have the same camera. Would you be able to share which frame rate and shutter speed you decided to use? Pleasure to watch, thanks!

@@BlacksheepPictures The camera was set to BT.2020 HLG3 Picture Profile and no customisations. I use the in-camera histogram and always try to balance towards highlights. @atlithoreinarsson 5 лет назад
Thank you Mark! You're not at all a lame sauce dude for asking. We shot in the basic Hyrbid Log Gamma preset on the A7III with a FE 50mm f/1.8 lens (real cheap but effective). We lit the whole project with two old LED lights - which was very limiting but a fun challenge (especially in rural Iceland with no electricity). Regarding the color correction it was the basic contrast and saturation bump, adding a hint of Lutify Me: Majoris LUT for better skin tones and a secondary grade on skin/background for adjustments. I hope this answers your questions, feel free to ask if something was unclear :)

@@atlithoreinarsson just super! I keep rewatching it. This is the type of filmmaking I aspire to do! I've left my job as an engineer, moved from Toronto to Egypt to make it as a filmmaker in advertsing (and work on creative stuff on the side) and the level of visual quality im seeing in your short is exactly the type of stuff I wanna be punching out. Thanks for the inspiration. I currently rock a sony a6300 with a sigma 30mm f1.4 as my goto, which on a full frame like the a7iii would be the equivilant of a 50, im uprading my camera next month hopefully and I think I'm sold on your combo for sure! Do you have an ND filter on the 50? hows the Autofocus? You should be very proud of your lighting, it was perfectly complimentary to the scenes! Im curious, how'd you do the monster? (I saw you've done some monster stuff before, pretty neat) Thanks for sharing your coloring process, i tend to use LUTs as well to get the skin tones to pop a bit more (i use IWTLB's SEDONA" on SLOG2, play with the intensity and the usual tweaks per clip and its solid). cheers mate. Keep on keepin on!
@atlithoreinarsson
@atlithoreinarsson 5 лет назад
@@hannam6 Thanks again, you’re too kind. I like the ambition on moving to Egypt to follow your goals! I highly recommend the A7III even though the A7sIII is probably arriving soon with better specs. If you have the budget and time I’d recommend waiting and seeing how that camera will turn out. But it will likely cost around 3k instead of sub-2k like the A7III. I don’t have any ND’s so I just stop down the aperture when needed - but I’m planning on buying. The autofocus is great! It doesn’t exactly read your mind so sometimes you have to do some focus-track point settings or lock focus. But it’s many many lightyears beyond my old Canon T2i “autofocus”, haha. The monster was purely in camera. Consisted of a large black cloth, an old monster mask and gloves, battery powered nightlight for the eyes, a large backpack and a whole lotta gaffer tape. I’ll definitely check the Sedona LUT out, thanks for that. And good luck with the career in Egypt!

Thank you Kevin! The location is in Iceland, where I live. And regarding the BTS, I'll think about it. You can scroll down in the comments and find a few comments about the grading and stuff, hopefully that helps :)

Mischa Decurtins Thank you! We used a single lens. The Sony FE 50mm f/1.8. It's pretty cheap and really does look great for the price.

Love it. The eyes of the monster are kind of funny, but it wasn't a big deal. Give us a written form of closure on this in the description, have a soul.

Wow that's awesome to hear, I'm glad you liked it. We just used the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 for everything. At first we tried the shot wide open at f1.8 but my AC noted the monster eyes in the background were too blurry so we closed it up to about f2.8

This really was a great one and I love how it looks! How did you achieve such a cinematic image with the sony a7III. What picture profile did you use for the shots? :)
@atlithoreinarsson
@atlithoreinarsson 5 лет назад
Thank you Aleksi! We used the basic Hyrbid Log Gamma picture profile, I really like it for the dynamic range and low noise (compared to SLOG-2). But IMO - I'd probably say that the main thing about cinematic image is lighting.

@atlithoreinarsson 3 года назад
@@iNiharPalwe Thanks! We used two LED panels and backlit everything. That's the key. For the main scene we put both lights outside, one shining through the back window, the other from the side window. We also found reflective material at the location and used as a bounce light on the darker side. Sadly no BTS footage.

Good short. I have one question, why did you have her keep her hand on the bolt and only cycle it once she heard the bell. It pulled me out of the moment watching her hold the bolt handle for so long for no reason. Its picky and probably only bothered me.
@atlithoreinarsson
@atlithoreinarsson 5 лет назад
Thank you! I get you completely regarding the bolt. It was discussed alot in pre-production. I think it boils basically down to a more dramatic beat in the script and upping the tension through character action. It's definitely not the most logical thing but in my opinion it works :)
