Transcendental and sublime. The whole album is just unsurpassed. BUT, you have to be willing to surrender yourself, close your eyes, and listen very intently. This isn't dance music, it's art.

I thank you for this. My father was Lowell George. This is REALLY GROOVY!

For ages I wondered if Lowell George was some sort of mistake, and the guy was named George Lowell. Then I let it go with a joyous "Who gives a...?" I see you are carrying on that noble family tradition, Forrest! Shout out for your father's great work with Zappa "and Elsewhere".

I wish there was concert videos of Zappa and the Mothers from this era.

Though there were some albums before this one, it was the fist thing I heard of Zappa. A fantastic sax player I knew had a spare copy he gave me. I was in complete awe of this music. I loved and played both jazz and rock and classical, and this stuff just satisfied me musically so completely that I can't describe it. I compose now for orchestral music for TV and I tribute Zappa for my ability to orchestrate. And it is as simple as this, listening to Zappa's music taught me to be courageous.

OK, I am going to go out on a limb and say this is the greatest piece of music produced in the 20th century because it is uniquely the fullest single expression thereof.

...the piano prelude is an adaptation of Arnold Schoenberg's first piece of "Six little piano pieces" composed in 1911...

I don't think so. Frank was possibly inspired by it when he composed this, but it's clearly not the same piece.

The intro is played by Ian Underwood, the only keyboard/piano player in the group with the chops to pull this off. No disrespect to Don who is good keyboard player on his own right.

My favorite part of the track is when Sugarcane jumps in and starts soloing and it breaks into the King Kong jam.

Love the 11 out of 10 rating, Listening to this, you can really hear the beginnings of Hot Rats and Wakajawaka compositions - same for Zawinul ‘s compositions for Miles on Bitches Brew and Big Fun leading into work on I Sing the Body Electric and Joe’s Orchestral album dedicated to his youth in Austria and the world scene as he was growing up - Really wish both of these guys were still around Zappa really did embrace classical , jazz and rock in his legacy leaving a wonderful “body of work”. ( really dislike that term -especially when determine which college basketball team should make the Big Dance). - but in this case the term is most appropriate.

I read an interview with Don Preston where he said the bass and drums are playing in 11/8, the melody is in 12/8 and then it’s juxtaposed on top of each other. . . ohhh kayyy.

I'm certain it is Ian playing the intro, not so sure about the improvisational section.

I've always believed this was Ian on piano, not just the into but throughout the jam with Harris. Anyone know for sure?
@gordo64ful

I think it's Ian on the intro and Don on the jam.
