I was lucky enough to attend the Battery event in San Francisco. I was sitting in the car in the courtyard, and Chris Anthony came over to talk to me. I asked about changing drive trains. Chris told me that from the beginning, the design was to work with either hubs motors or with this central motor unit from the get-go, and he was very adamant this wasn't a redesign. Frankly, I don't think they could redesign it that quickly and maintain all the structures without causing a massive catastrophe or re-engineering time losses. And I think if there are different visual designs from the past, I think they had two different frames available or frame add-ons to make the adjustments needed.

It is going to be great! I have much more confidence in this redesign. In time the hub motor will be a mature product, with every problem solved and every component in mass production (the motor, wheel en power electronics). 'Protean will be first to accomplish this', is my lucky guess. One has to integrate a breaking and cooling system with the hub motor, and make it weather/road proof. That is not an easy engineering task. A fully functional, durable and mass produced in-wheel motor for electric cars, is a huge milestone in EV history. The companies who can achieve this are awesome. An ultra airodynamic sedan/hatchback/three-wheeler with in-wheel motors and solar panel cover, that is the future 100%, unless I finally figure out how ZPE extraction can be done on a commercial scale (then anything goes).
