In 1866 a gruesome murder on a rural farm in the centre of Scotland shocked the local community. With little clues to go on outside of a bloody axe, a boiled egg and a missing door key, the police would eventually be left having to rely heavily on a string of unreliable testimony to do their job, a factor that would go some way in creating what would wind up as Scotland’s longest running cold case.

A new batch of DH sleepy aides, man I love it thank you so much for your increasing catalogue you've really become my favorite go to companion to sleepy times, an episode takes a week+ to get thru picking up where I dozed off and they're always good to revisit in the downtime. Love it, thank ya ❤

Poor Janet. I guess we'll never know for sure but I suspect Crichton got away with murder. Another fascinating episode!

One scenario could have Chrichton, thinking that Janet was a maid, propositioning her (or more). Janet refuses his advances, perhaps threatening to tell her brother, at this Crichton looses it; a fight ensues and he kills her in a rage? Of course it’s also possible that there the peddler found a woman alone in an isolated house and decided to either to outright kill her (similar to the Angel Resendiz killings) or rob her, except she puts up more of a fight than he was expecting and he ends up killing her. Either way I think the truth of the killing is lost to time.

At 24:00, it's said that the brother and the dead girl's husband got back to work.on the farm and life had returned to mostly "peaceful normality." After like two days? Are you serious?

Motive could have been Crichton making sexual advances he did say he thought she was new maid

Gruesome murders on rural farms seem to be less rare than they should be??? Takes the old” get off my land” to a whole other level! So beware of farmers out there!!😉
