That Mummy had the misfortune of taking the eyes from the only guy who was like a -7 prescription 😂 No wonder he needed Beni’s help, he couldn’t see where he was bloody going.

My favorite part is that they gave their pilot Winston his wish. One last mission for him to go out in a blaze of glory and be buried in the sands just like his comrades. Most tend to miss that Wilson went out with a smile on his face dying the death he wanted.

Brendan Fraser is a national treasure and must be protected. One of the most wholesome men on the planet, who went through some very awful stuff that caused him to stop his acting career for many years. Very glad he's back, we love him. Also, a 'broad' is a term from the 1950's in America that is slang for a promiscuous woman, someone who's got a 'broad' clientele, if you catch my meaning. Camels are quite fast and were used in the Middle East for cavalry (called "camelry") due to their ability to withstand the climate better than horses, and because horses don't like camels so enemy cavalry would have a harder time controlling their mounts. And your pronunciation of Cleopatra is adorable lol
@3Rayfire
@3Rayfire 11 месяцев назад
Broad actually dates from the 1910s and became popular in the 20s. Which is appropriate since this film is set in 1926.
@michaeldmcgee4499
@michaeldmcgee4499 11 месяцев назад
Wrong. Broad is a slang term that refers to women in general. It's based on the fact that women's hips are much wider (broad) than those of men. It has nothing to do with promiscuity.

The amount of reactors that classify this as a scary movie confuses me. It's an action/adventure. Yes, there are "horrific" things in it, but it's not meant to frighten. Like, you wouldn't classify Men In Black as a scary movie cause the Edgar Bug sticks dead bodies to the ceiling, or snaps people in half. It's the same thing.
@Cheepchipsable

I wouldn't call it horror, but I can see why. The bad guys is ethereal and persistent. MiB has no such bad guy.

The "body horror" is what tips most people over the edge. Having live bugs crawling inside one's body tends to provoke a very visceral, instinctive revulsion.

What you likely fail to appreciate is the effects of this film, which were groundbreaking at the time, but have since been imitated so often they're common tropes of CG infested films today. It wasn't even nominated for visual effects at the Oscars (and The Phantom Menace was 🤮). I must admit being more fond of The Mummy Returns than I am of The Mummy. Hope you add it to a poll someday (a poll of sequels, to be fair).
@TahiriVeila13ABY
@TahiriVeila13ABY 11 месяцев назад
Phantom Menace was well deserving of an Oscar nomination. The visual effect work on that movie is astounding, the fact that it had two fully realized cgi characters alone make it deserving. Of all the criticism of Episode 1 back then, especially of Jar Jar, nobody ever mentioned the CGI, because it was incredibly good. The work on Episode 1 was far better than The Mummy, and a far more impressive feat than The Matrix (which has a truly awful compositing shot in it of Trinity jumping through a window at the start). If Episode 1 was well received, it would have won the Oscar for visual effects easy. The Mummy returns is a massive step down from The Mummy, with some of the worst CGI of all time. It has quite possibly the worst CGI shot in film history (of a big budget movie anyway), even the filmmakers regret that shot.

Brendan Fraiser is one of the most down to earth people in the industry. As you said in the open he won a bunch of awards last year but more than anything people in the industry and fans wanted him to succeed and be happy again. He’s had some tough luck and moments in his career while always staying positive and respected. It’s great to see him getting his moment in the Sun again.

9:34 - "What is 'broad'?" - It's an old, somewhat derogatory slang word for a woman. 9:36 - "That seems awful." - Originally, that's how most hangings were carried out. Hanging had been in use as an execution method for a long time before anyone figured out that if you dropped the person a sizable distance with a rope around their neck, it would snap their neck and kill them. It was many years after that, that they figured out how to precisely calculate the distance of the drop to break the person's neck without either strangling them, or decapitating them. 10:00 - "So many words I've never heard before." - "Flimflam" = scam. 18:07 - "Oh yeah, that was one of the plagues, right? The crickets?" - Locusts. The sequel, The Mummy Returns is also worth watching. It's pretty much more of the same. After that, the sequels get worse.

So to answer your question, I coincidentally watched The Whale earlier this week. It has fantastic acting, not just by Brenden Frazier, although he was the best. Hated the movie, though. So depressing with a bummer ending that was clearly telegraphed from the very beginning. It's one of those movies that sets out to make a point about an issue and then builds the movie around it rather than setting out to tell a great story and maybe include a message. I'm sure it is critically acclaimed for the issues raised and the good acting, but it's just not enjoyable.

the derogatory term "broad" was used to refer to women in the 1970's, particularly in the United States. The term was often used in a demeaning way. "Flimflam" reached its peak usage in the 1920s and 1930s, when con artists and grifters were more prevalent in society. It refers to something that is false or deceptive, and is often used to describe a swindle or a con. Derived from the old English phrase "flim-flam flummox," which meant to confuse or perplex someone.

16:16. Librarian here (in case the user name is anything ambiguous). One thing I deeply dislike in this film is saying that the lady is a librarian. This is a service profession; it's meant to help people to find information they need, enjoyment they like, inspiration to overcome adversity. We are there for the users, not for our own advancement. This lady is as much a librarian as Indiana Jones is an archeologist (treasure hunter or grave robber would be more accurate in his case). Geez. I wonder whether the writers ever talked to a librarian in their lives...

A Halloween movie should be anything related to the supernatural the end. As a kid I enjoyed Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein when they'd play that around this time in the 60's. A comedy which featured the classic 'monsters'. As far as Evie, we know the only thing that frightens her are Rick O'Connell's manners. The sequel is excellent and if you enjoyed this director's style, then the follow up to these - Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman - is worth a watch.

What kind of book shelving that tall isn't anchored to all the other shelves or the wall? I have tons of books. All my shelves are anchored so I don't tip them accidentally, or so they don't tip if grands climb on them (which they do if I'm not around for a minute). @UCaXXRo9suoP8gQVZOaRdy2g Yeah, I was traveling in rajasthan 20 years ago and I decided to take a 1 hour ride on a camel or a dromedary (I don't remember) in the desert. It was very painful because there was no saddle, a very thin blanket and the back of the camel is hard and not wide at all (it's kinda triangular). The fact that I'm a man didn't help (if you know what I mean). Maybe it's less painful for a woman, I don't know. 🙃 Also, if you tend to be seasick (I'm not), maybe it's not the best animal to ride. And be careful when he gets up with you on the back, it's brutal. Don't fall! So I'm glad I did it for the experience but I won't do it again because I'm not masochistic. Sorry for my english, I'm from Brussels and I speak french (Mijn vlaams is niet heel goed helaas, sorry 😉).

It’s funny, in this movie the villain is named Imhotep, which was the vizier, chancellor, architect and high priest of Ra to the pharaoh Djoser (the only thing this movie gets correct, slightly lol) and designed the step pyramid for him, which lead to the eventual design of the pyramids we know at Giza. He was also a physician and if memory serves, he wrote an interesting bit on cancer. Long after his death he was heralded as a man of wisdom and great knowledge, deified by the people that remembered his name. Also, the book of the dead is very misunderstood, it’s actual name is the book of going forth by day, and was basically just a guide on how to prepare the body for the afterlife and the rituals and spells one would need to ensure safe passage beyond. It’s really cool, I have a copy and it’s really beautiful. By the way, Hamunaptra is a fictional place, it never existed.

I thought this movie was kind of silly and campy, but a lot of people really enjoyed it. It has two sequels that you might consider checking out. There was another movie of the same title starring Tom Cruise that got mixed reviews, but I enjoyed it. It was intended to be first in a revival of Universal Pictures' monster movies in a unified franchise, but that effort was abandoned. Another movie that explores Egyptian mythology from a different direction is Stargate. It's pretty good science fiction, and it spawned three television series. It has a devoted cult following. (Stargate opened in the cinema at about the same time as Star Trek: Generations. One of the promos for Stargate said "If you want real science fiction, forget Star Trek and see Stargate," or words to that effect.)

Whale was a great movie, you would not recognize him.

They're using old terms and phrases like hokum, flimflam, etc. from the 40s. Also, in those days women weren't regarded as scholars, etc. as much and were looked down to in 'serious' studies or situations.

I've been to a number of countries and see things like Great Wall, the Colosseum, etc, etc, etc. The Great Pyramids at Giza really stand out. Their massive size really show just how large the civilization that built them must have been. You can't really appreciate their scale until you are there. They totally dominate the city of Cairo, the blocks at the base are twice your size. If you stay at one of the hotels that are near them, the sides of the pyramids are the only thing you can see out your window. The pyramids are definitely the wonder of the world I would say people must see.

Broad is very dismissive and disrespectful term. It's so old though that most people would be confused or laugh if you said it.

Aronofsky movies are an exercise in pain. Good if you can take it. I like the Wrestler

Great reaction. Brendan Fraser is not well known as a serious actor but you might want to check out "Gods and Monsters" a charming film.
