This week it's my first time watching THE MUMMY RETURNS!! I feel a lot of this one is covered in the Universal ride/I had a fever dream flashback of maybe watching some of these sequences as a kid but nothing compares to seeing that Scorpion King in the flesh as a grown-ass adult. Nothing could've prepared me for that!! Comment below, is this one as fun as the first?!

The actor who played the titular Mummy (Imhotep?) did a great job in his last scene of making us feel genuinely sad for him, despite all the awful things he'd done up to now.

It's certainly not subtle, but the contrast between the two couples at the end (good guys: he yells at her to get out of there, she runs in to save him anyway vs. bad guys: he begs for her to run in to save him but she runs away) is very satisfying.

It makes me feel so bad for Imhotep though since his love for her was literally the reason he ended up mummified alive and cursed. Then he waits 3000 yrs to be reunited with her and then she’s like yeah I’m out, good luck with that pit.

I saw a comment on that scene a long while back that points out the way Imhotep glances at Rick and Evie as if he's making peace with them, seeing their love is true before he lets himself go. The actor played his part brilliantly.

The Gospel, which means the Good News is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. The one God is a trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son came and laid down his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. John 1:1,14 KJV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and THE WORD WAS GOD. [14] And THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and dwelt among us, 1 John 3:8 KJV He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Isaiah 9:6 KJV For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty GOD, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and THE WORLD KNEW HIM NOT. John 3:18 KJV He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

That's selflessness and sacrifice, the very definition of true love, versus selfishness and shallow desire. And yeah, even Imhotep realized and acknowledged this to Rick and Evie.

One thing I always loved about this movie is the fact that there's no tension between Evie and Rick. There's no stupid misunderstandings, or jealousy because an old flame reappears, they just love each other and work through the problems presented to them as a team. My then girlfriend, now wife, and I saw this in theaters and loved it so much that we bought it on DVD. Time to upgrade to Blu-Ray!

I saw this in theatrically and I like you was thinking “where is the scorpion king? Why is it taking them so long to see him!” And then when they did finally reveal him I thought “ooh that makes sense, THAT is why they didn’t reveal him till the very end.” That cg work was really really rough. It’s like the CG for the mummy himself wasn’t earth shattering but it didn’t pull me out of the movie. That CG Rock monstrosity though did pull me out of what should have (and could have) been a great final battle scene.

Apparently The Rock was still very busy with the WWE that this was the best CG that they could do.
@PatrickBudderocks

I remember seeing it and the CGI was bad then. Most CGI looks good that the time it's made. Twister had amazing effects, but now some still look decent and some look bad. The Scorpion King is one of the rare ones that was never good CGI. That being said, I think the producers just had tight pockets and didn't want to spend the money to make it look good. I know The Rock's availability wasn't the best, but this movie came out 5 years after Starship Troopers, there was no excuse not to make the CGI better, in this movie. Edit: Typo
@cmlemmus494
@cmlemmus494 Год назад
To be fair, this came out 8 months prior to Fellowship of the Ring and while it did have approximately the same budget, motion capture just wasn't there yet. Remember, this is also the same year as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and that studio was making a huge deal out of being able to render hair semi-realistically.
@ronfehr7899
@ronfehr7899 Год назад
@@cmlemmus494 Had motion capture been fully available, there was still the matter of the Rock's busy schedule. The tools would have been there, but they're useless without the actor.
@cmlemmus494
@cmlemmus494 Год назад
@@ronfehr7899 I see it in the opposite direction. If better motion capture had been available, they could have choreographed a lot of the action with a stunt double and mapped Johnson's face on top. Regardless, I think we're saying the same thing in different ways. The weird CG of this film isn't entirely their fault or a result of the budget.

17:50 - Interesting and quite obscure little bit of cinematic trivia sailed past you there: the seamless transition between the sand castle and the actual location. That's OK, you haven't seen Creepshow yet. In 80's, when making that movie, they wanted to make a seamless transition between a piece of animation of a comic book opening up to a certain picture of a house and the actual house. It was so technically difficult that they went for a more conventional transition instead (if memory serves, and it doesn't always, it was a top-down wipe). Watching that again is a good reminder of how far special effects tech has come.

There is a third movie (The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) but Rachel Weiz didn't return. They recast the part with Maria Bello. The third features their son as a young man, played by Luke Ford. The movie takes its inspiration from the terracotta "army" found in China in 1974. This time the mummy is an ancient Chinese emperor. This one didn't do as well, grossing "only" $400 million. Reviews were less kind, although Roger Ebert liked it. We also get Jet Li and Michelle Yeo. Me, I liked it.

Best main character reveal in a movie is a toss up for me between Blade in his first movie, and Joker in The Dark Knight...both so damn iconic! As for this movie, I loved it when I first saw it and I love it still. Not quite as much as I love the first one, but it's close. Brendan & Rachel have such great chemistry on screen and they really are, as you said in your review of the first one, a genuine Movie Couple. Both hot af, both talented af, and again that chemistry just sizzles. I also just love Arnold Vosloo and really felt so bad for Imhotep when he was abandoned...it's really all just enough of the same stuff from the first movie to keep it firmly in that fun zone, and enough new stuff to make it stand apart, and it's such a fun watch. Such a shame about the third one, though

There's no reason to think that the scorpion king could remove the carvings or had any agency within the temple/city/thing; it wasn't his pad, it was his prison.

1:42 - You'll get all that: this one for me was right there on the bleeding edge of power-creep, as in almost-but-not-quite-there over the top. Basically, OK.

Machine guns (or submachine guns in this case) are really, really good at two things, usually: missing and chewing through ammo like mad. Unless you've got soldiers packed like sardines in cans landing on the beaches of Normandy, you're going to expend 1000+ rounds for every hit you get, generally.

One character reveal that I like didn't actually occur at the beginning of the movie. That one was Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey in The Green Mile. Viewers were introduced to how big he was before they finally got to see his face.

Apart from the CGI, this movie is a 10. I agree with the girl fight, probably one of my favorite ones in movie, the other one being Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

I always believed that they were surprised at the success of the first movie so they threw this together to reap a fast payout. Really not a movie I ever would watch a second time (I struggled through the first watching).

29:55 Whaaaat?! They didn't use stunt women?! Wow! I totally thought they were wearing those masks in the Ancient Egypt flashback fight to cover up the fact that they used stunt doubles.

They used stunt doubles for the acrobatic parts but Rachel and Patricia did a lot of it. They said they had the scars on their fingers to prove it!

I was paying $6 a ticket in AZ in 2014 My local theater is $7, $5 matinee, in 2023 Both theaters have electric recliners with cup holders and all that stuff. I think I've paid $12-14 about three times in my life. Otherwise managed to buy theater tickets for less than $9 most of my life.

The reason the CG of the Scorpion King is so bad, according to Brendan Fraser, is that the team working on it weren’t given enough time to work on it, so we got this. I’m not sure if that’s true, but that’s what he said, and apparently the team has made some really great CGI work so they are skilled and capable, but just weren’t allowed the time they needed.
