Michael Caine, Kermit the Frog, Gonzo and more chatted with ET on the set of 'The Muppet Christmas Carol' in 1992. In behind-the-scenes interviews, the Oscar winner, who plays iconic literary curmudgeon Ebenezer Scrooge, shared his comedy secret for acting with The Muppets. To celebrate the musical's 30th anniversary, a lost song, 'When Love Is Gone,' from the theatrical version was restored and it's once again part of the holiday classic on Disney+.

Michael Caine is still the best portrayal of scrooge I've ever seen even though he's in a Muppet movie he still shines.

He's my favorite Scrooge as well. Muppet Christmas Carol had just the right amount of Muppet silliness without losing the integrity of the original story, and Michael Caine's performance was incredible. My dad grew up with Alastair Sim's version, and I grew up with George C. Scott, but Caine tops them both, he broke my heart in all the best ways.

This film was my mother's favorite Christmas Carol. She was a Michael Caine fanatic on top of that. Best Christmas Carol ever

the decision for him to play it completely straight while the muppets do their antics around him was one of the best decisions in film history

I saw a comment somewhere that said the reason this movie and Muppet Treasure Island work so well is because Michael Caine behaves as though the Muppets are actors, and Tim Curry behaves as though he himself is a Muppet 😂 100% accurate in my opinion!

The fact that they did it seriously while including the silly aspect of muppets made it so great. Multiple scenes would be serious if you replaced the muppets with serious humans. At the same time, it wouldn't be so unique either, but the multiple levels of this story are there with the funny muppets

I cannot believe it's been 30 years... it feels like yesterday. OTD, 30 years ago today The MUPPETS CHRISTMAS Carol was released. The MCC is currently “touring” the U.K. (Nov/December 2023) with a full orchestra replacing the recorded music and with the extended version (including “When love has gone”) being shown. If you ever get the chance to see this performance (I suspect it’ll become a regular feature in years to come given that the theatre my daughter and I saw it in was absolutely rammed full), take it. It’ll blow you away.

The genius of this film is how it does not make fun of the original story. It is comedic and fun, but it is still a very respectfully done adaptation and I honestly think Dickens would have unironically loved this.
