Arcane was so great I have arisen from my sarcoughagus to talk about its music for 22 straight minutes. Watch it?
Arcane is an exception to the rule that a game adaptation can't be great, that a CG animated TV show can't be cinematic quality, and that score and soundtrack are fundamentally separate.

Have to agree here. This video made me think so much more about how the music was integrated it elevated a bunch of songs I didn't fully appreciate for being in the scenes they were in like Our Love. It seems jarring at first to have a blues style song in that setting but what made it work for me on first watch was simply how good the track was. But now after watching this video I get the sense that since Zaun is heavily leaning on vocal tracks unlike Piltover they needed a song like this to express the sense of soul and community Zaunites had that the edgier songs simply couldn't convey.
@midnight1672
@midnight1672 Год назад
@@patrikneperfekta7575 That may be so but if by reactions you mean those of people commenting on YT videos or maybe reddit threads or similar, than you have to understand that those people are far, far from the average audience of the TV show. Don't get me wrong, I think that even the average watcher of the show will appreciate that it's a good show, maybe even a very good one as the 9.0/10 rating on IMDb proves. However I would agree with @Ivo Goeyens that most of the intricacies like the soundtrack, that contribute to the work of art that is this show, will go way over most peoples heads. What keeps getting me is how every single aspect of the show is done so very good. The music, the artstyle, the storytelling, the voice acting. I'd be really hard pressed to find anything at all to criticize about the show. Incidentally this makes me low-key anxious about season 2 because it will be such a tall order to live up to the expectations set by season 1. 😂

@DLxxx
@DLxxx 3 месяца назад
@@joshua.h Don't get your hopes _too_ high. Season 1 took 6 years to develop, and the lack of a hard deadline meant they could take advantage of that extra time to iron out any issues with the story and allow the animators to throw in there own additional details to elevate the show even further (not something shows usually have the room to do). Compare that to season 2, which will only have 3 years to develop (since Fortiche didn't know they'd get a second season till after S1 released). That's half the development time of season 1! And now they also have fan reactions to take into account, and pressure to release the story sooner rather than later (sadly not all fans are patient when it comes to this show). So there's a very strong chance that even if season 2 is good, it'll be weaker than season 1.

Knowing nothing about music theory, it was genuinely fascinating to see how the emotional beats in the story were brought out by the musical techniques being used. Arcane is a masterpiece in every department, its still amazing that somehow a video game adaptation could bring all these parts together in a way where its unfair to anime to compare it to them but its true comparison is to the biggest, most successful Golden Age live action shows.

I’ll have to listen for that in the ost! I love how this score isn’t extremely leitmotif driven. Themes were for the show’s ideas, not specifically its characters.

Christian Linke was recently in a german Podcast ("Der Phantastik-Brunch" episode 35) as a guest. There was a part where he spoke about the music. Very interesting. I don't want to translate and rewrite all aspects. But just one aspect: he said they deliberately made a point of using different styles of music for Piltover and Zaun. In the upper town more orchestral music, technically very accurate and sophisticated. not only the first and second violins, but also more audibly in orchestras the far left, for example. And with Piltover as with large orchestras or bands, in Zaun more in the urban, alternative way and with fewer musicians.

First: great video! Oh man, this music.... if i just think about "what could have been" i get tears in my eyes. Im sure, they want hurt all viewers ,as much as possible and i it works so good. I mean actually it's just a painted comic show in a fantasy world... but i cried more for those cartoon characters than for all the other super sad moments in all the other movies/series i know combined... and everytime i watch again - uff. This visual/music combo delivers always.^^ You did a really nice video that desers much more klicks And btw, you should watch the new LoL saison 2022 cinematic "the call"...again with a really epic song. Maybe you already know it but if not - I swear, you will love it ;)

I always get choked up seeing the despair on Caitlyn’s face in that final scene… especially knowing what she’s thinking… the animators absolutely nailed that look to produce maximum empathy :’( I watched The Call trailer! Super epic music and amazing visuals, I love how different it looks from Arcane while being the same universe! Thank you for the compliment :)

I am not a musician, and my attempt to learn music theory boiled down to 'I think I understood some of that' while watching this video. But it was still fascinating to hear an actual expert explain things that hadn't consciously occurred to me until watching.

I get chills every time listening to the soundtrack. It was also nominated for a Billboard Music Award this year for best soundtrack for an animated production - it lost to Disney's Encanto, which of course also has an amazing soundtrack. Still I was so happy to see the music of Arcane getting more recognition and appreciation. And it's recently been announced that Arcane is also nominated for 2 Emmy awards! Best animated production and best sound editing! So, so deserved. I never watch award shows but I'm gonna watch the emmys this year in hopes that they win both!! Didn't look up who their competitors were but idc, team Arcane all the way!

I'm always iffy on award shows too, especially since I thoroughly disagree with the "Best Score" and "Best Animated Feature" categories every year. So when I see a genuinely great show recognized with awards I'm extra happy!

Awesome video! It is really fascinating to see how they used different genres to symbolize different places/different societies and that they tie in a class warfare narrative right from the first episode. Just one small nitpicky thing: I would have loved a little breakdown of Silco's theme since I found it so unorthodox and uncommon to use a female voice for a villain theme.
@CelShadedMusicTheory
@CelShadedMusicTheory 2 года назад
Seeing as that vocal theme only occurred twice, both within Act 1, I didn't really think to mention it. Hearing it now it seems like it may be more of a "change of heart" motif as its only 2 occurrences are during Silco's betrayal by Vander and Powder's betrayal by Vi. It certainly connects strongly to Silco, but isn't utilized often enough throughout the series to be his theme per-say.

the way you break down the songs and how they play into the story’s narrative is so admirable. you’re so in tune (pun intended) with how music emulates emotions with inclusion to the theory behind it. someday if you ever have time, i would adore a video dumbing all this stuff down because i want to learn how to replicate music but the technicalities of it all make it so confusing to begin. anyways, this video is amazing! your knowledge on this subject is beautifully displayed here.
@CelShadedMusicTheory

I love media music because it provides a lens into the functional process of composition unlike any other genre. It's music theory weaponized for maximum emotional impact and it's so interesting to unpack because of that! I may get a little too technical with terms sometimes, but I'm glad the video resonated with you even without a music theory background. :)

This analysis is amazing. I loved the show but it's funny how you can forget how important the music is in tying it all together and even when I'm not consciously thinking about the score while watching Arcane, all the background work was there to make me feel all the emotions at all the right points in the run. Thank you for making this video, it deserves way more than 11k views. I hope that the algorithm is kind to you.
@CelShadedMusicTheory

Music is often the emotional heart of the media it scores, trying to elicit feelings from the viewer without drawing too much attention to itself. That’s why animated scores like this are so excellent, because they accompany larger than life stories with deeply emotional character drama! It all works together so well that it hits you at a subconscious level, and Arcane is a true work of art on that front. Thanks for watching my video to dig a little deeper! :)

Excellent breakdown, it was the music in that opening scene that made me pay attention to this show. I had noticed the use of the II chord in Goodbye and Guns for Hire (I especially love it on Guns for Hire, I love how he accents the b5 (major 3rd of the II chord) in the second half of the chorus over it, then also hits it again less accented after that b6/5 descent, definitely a song writing trick I'll be yoinking) but I'd not spotted it in What Could Have Been, or tied together how it was acting as a common theme point in the show at the end of each act! Very glad I watched this show a few weeks ago after a friend sat me down and forced me to watch it! I normally hate TV and films so was pretty grumpy at first, but that exquisite music in the opening scene caught my attention so I stopped my moaning very quickly and I was treated to that rarest of things; TV that's worth watching. EDIT: moments after posting I realise it'd really be a #4 rather than a b5 in Guns for Hire, but whatever, sure you got what I meant

It's a masterpiece, I've never seen anything like it in my life, I thought it'd be a kids show which is why it took me so long to check it out, absolutely not for kids, and it's quite possibly the best thing made in entertainment history. Says a lot because I'm a movie/tv-show addict, it's actually so good, that I haven't felt satisfied watching anything else since watching Arcane. Kind of incredible really... To have a show impact you so much that it just ruins every other show out there right now, haha I'm also having a hard time getting through the day without Arcane just stuck in my mind, serious brain rot which has left me somewhat dysfunctional lool. Oh lord help me.

Excellent video sir, deserving of more views. One of my favorite motifs is Viktor's theme, which can most clearly be heard in 'The Toy Boat' (start of ep6), and shows up somewhat regularly in various forms throughout his scenes. Arcane for me is beyond perfection, just watching this analysis shows me more about the kind of elevated art the show has achieved. You got a very nice point: writing for the show rather than borrow music. That's a perspective that has been on video games for a long time but in this case is also matching scenes to tell stories without words. I cannot imagine the outstanding pressure composers had to pass through in order to match their music to the show.
