Man, my sister died when I was 10 in 2006 and about six months later I discovered My Chemical Romance and they propelled me through my Emo phase. I’m now 26 and I still have all their CDs, concert DVDs and my old band teeshirt and a couple of posters. I knew EVERYTHING about them, all their songs, everything. My parents even drove me 3 hours to Nashville on a school night to see their Black Parade tour when I was 11 (after my sister died I pretty much got anything I asked for). I know it sounds cringe-y to say “MCR saved my life”, but man, their music really got me through some tough nights alone. I’m so excited that they’re back together and I legitimately cannot wait for their new album to come out. 💜

From what I've seen, the guys still are very touched when fans tell them MCR saved them, so no need to worry about "cringe", mate :) They saved mine too and I'm so glad they did.

Oh man, I relate so hard to this. We’re the same age and I discovered them at the same time, right around when the music video for Helena first came out. Some nights when I was a teenager and I felt like the most terrified, lonely kid in the world, I put on my headphones and fell asleep listening to the lines “I’m trying, I’m trying.” It might be cringe, but you’re not alone in feeling that way. Art is unbelievably powerful, especially for lost young people.

That news report on the "dangers of emo culture"... I find it really funny that the song they chose to play over their intro is "Famous Last Words". Y'know, the song that famously features the lyrics "I am not afraid to keep on living/I am not afraid to walk this world alone." I wasn't really into the hardcore emo scene at the age I maybe might have been, but I still was exposed to it, and I won't deny that there were some fans who took away the wrong ideas, who glorified depression and self-harm. But at least with MCR specifically? Listening to them now as an adult, I don't really get that impression from them at all. Their songs tackle a lot of darker emotional topics, but they come out of a place of *processing* those emotions rather than wallowing in them, and the effect is actually pretty life-affirming in a way. So much of the message seems to be, "It's better to express these emotions openly than pretend you don't feel them, and getting it out of your system will help you push through and come out happier on the other side." And that's a message *everyone* needs to hear, especially teenagers, who are at a really rough transitional period in their lives. It doesn't help to tell someone going through a rough time to just "quit whining and get over it"--you have to give them a healthy outlet to express themselves, and MCR provided that outlet while also assuring them that things would eventually get better and nothing was worth hurting yourself over. That earns them a lot of respect in my eyes.

I don’t wonder why Gerard himself didn’t want to be associated with emo movement at any point, if something like this was put on the news. 👀 I also was quite against this thing since through MCR I “changed” a lot in front of my classmates, who never accepted me for wte reason. Once they noticed that switch in my visual appearance (which was indeed heavily inspired by this band, actually), I was marked as an emo. And even tho I didn’t see anything bad in emo culture itself and saw it as a natural opposite to all the cool kids and popular stuff they do, I knew that my classmates exactly thinks that I’m selfharming myself at home, even more - they very well knew that they are a legit reason for me to do so. Just like Gerard I also wanted to detach myself from that tag, and to me it was more of the artsy side in it, as well as the message. Since I couldn’t become one of the crowd, I ended up in this world created by MCR, and I’d say that in this sense they probably avoided some selfharm indeed, cuz I viewed them as smth different, getting a different perspective instead of keep on sitting in misery. But, well, I guess, every now and then things like that happens. A classical rockmusic at the time also was counted as smth devious. Hopefully, I’m not gonna be this kind of a piece of banana, if my kids will stumble upon smth more unusual than the mainstream and will be able to remember my own youth.

What made 3 cheers an important album to me was the extremely frantic vocal tracks that felt like being squeezed of breath screaming till you pass out. The quick paced guitar work that jumps between dredging distortion to clean melodies playing smooth on either side. The hard drumming fused with a split mid sharp low end pumping punk vibration out that drains you after every track gets absorbed into your mind with its catchy hook that reels you in like a fisherman.

God that Utah clip is infuriating realizing that their teen suicide rate has everything to do with easy access to guns and familial alienation from coming out of the closet in such a religious state. I hope some parents at least listened to the music and if their kids were in a bad place tried to help them as opposed to just stigmatizing them more.

This album was burnt by my friends 4 times to force my sister and I to listen to MCR when it came out during my freshman year of highschool. (Depending on Fuse/MTV for music and not having internet sucked!!) Man was it AWESOME! I remember doing a 4-way call whenever their videos premiered. I was obsessing over this and the previous album while people were going crazy over their newer stuff and didn't realize they had more music til I was 23 and graduating college. I FINALLY get to see them at Aftershock Festival this year and I cannot wait! Something you should start mentioning in these types of videos is that Gerard (along with Bert McCracken from The Used and Davey Havok from AFI, just to name a few people) all made some of their greatest stuff due to dealing with drug use, alcoholism, death, depression/suicidal thoughts, etc. Good video. Glad to revisit stuff from my teen years.

Had a rough day at work, the Cozy Rep dropping a vid on the GOAT 2000s emo album is just what I needed tonight. Edit: Man, this video is hitting me right now. This was my era, I was 15 when Three Cheers came out, I saw MCR opening on the American Idiot tour, and it really kinda tears me up inside because those days were not happy times for me in that moment. I would say my mental health was in the pits in 2004-2005. And yet it's so achingly nostalgic for me. Such is the paradox of life I guess. Anyway, great vid, thanks for all that you do, Cozy.

I was first exposed to MCR by Fuse. It was the Helena video and it burned itself so deep into my brain I forgot the name of the song and the band.. just that in awe that everything but the music and video was wiped from my memory. Moved to another country about a year later and finally got internet in 06, managed to find it by looking up "dancing at a funeral rock music addams family". My life has never been the same and I found the things that bring me joy and give me purpose. I tell stories and do art because I discovered a love of story telling via MCR and the stories they told through the years. It was one of the few things that kept me going and I always return to them when the creative well is running dry or I need to remember why stories are important and how they can help you.

I was around 10 when I first heard Helena on the radio and fell in love, but it wasn't until a couple years later I found who it was. I was hooked instantly. This is my favorite MCR album. It's unlike any other "fav album" of mine, completely in it's own ranks, and I've never heard anything that came close to what they accomplished on this album specifically. Their first 3 albums are an integral part of my adolescence and really shaped my overall music taste.

Great video, I loved it, but I have one thing I'd like to say: Maybe it would have been nice to mention the fact that Gerard was really not in a very good place during this era. He was a addict, alcoholic, and suicidal and it would've been a good idea to bring that up at least once as it kinda feels like you ignored the personal lives of the band, and as anyone who's watched Life On The Murder Scene can say, Gerard's mental state was important to this era of the band. Other than that, 100% great video, I'm looking forward to a Black Parade one next, and I hope you at least mention how shitty the making of that album was with them recording it in a haunted mansion and all.

People always forget a lot of these bigger band's members were going through hell during their peak times. So iconic, this album and the style and everything. I love it to this day, I've listened to this album pretty regularly over the last 17 years. They definitely were a great band.

Their music definitely helped me a lot during my teenage years and still do to this day. They are incredibly special to me and I am so happy that the new generation of emo kids are loving the music as much as I do. Great video as always man keep up the great work!

Dude! You should make a videos series about all the decades of vans warped tour (beginnings in 90's, 00's, 10's and the end of VET) and all the bands who came from that tours. That's would be awesome!
