I love learning about the history of video games! I remember as a kid thinking, “ what the hell is this?”, when I played SMB2 the first time! Or learning years later that the Final Fantasy III I played was actually the sixth installment.

My cousin had this game on a Gameboy multicart! I really liked it back in the days, and thought it was a Mario Land sequel first, as the OG Mario Land was also on that cartridge. But now I finally know what it actually is! Thanks!

I can agree the first time you hold hands with the Duke you can't work out where to place your thumbs, especially going from a Dualshock with both sticks at the bottom. I like this concept of alternate realities. Another game that had a similar fate to Doki Doki Panic was (I forget the full title for) the Magical Hat game becoming Decap Attack.

as a guy with long fingers and thumbs, the duke controller is actually the most comfortable controller for me, i find a lot of controllers to be too cramped, and me thumbs hit eachother nonstop while playing!

As an uncultured American, hearing a British accent while you're touring Poland and talking about a bootleg game made in Taiwan is cultural overload for me. 😁

To give context on how professional you sound, I was watching the intro and my roommate thought I was watching a WWII documentary on the BBC lol.

I loved the Duke being a fella with rather large hands it was the one controller that never made my hands hurt with prolonged use.

My maternal grandparents was german jews. At one point in the war they was kept in a "camp" in Poland. Luckily for them (and me) they survived. I'd love to go there one day and see where they was kept. I loved Mario for the game boy. It was probably my favourite. Hadn't a clue that there as a mario 2, 3, and 4.🤔

I grew up thinking I was tripping for finding this Mario game so much harder than the others... makes much more sense now. I still have the standalone copy!

I used to have a "21 in 1" multicart when I was a kid. It included all official GB/C Mario games, as well as the game in this video, a mod of Adventure Island 2 GB featuring Mario, and even a Sonic game that was REALLY terrible.

Interesting the label says Only For Gameboy Color but it plays on a regular Gameboy and it is on a grey cartridge which are for mono Gameboy games.

The Duke WAS made for the American market, but we hate it just as much as the rest of the world. The 360 goes down as one of the 2 best designs of all time with the dual shock, but the Duke looked cool at fist glance, HATED everywhere after actually using it.

This video is featuring the legend of Zelda however I never heard of that game during Pegasus times. I never had a game that would utilise save states. This ROM hack of an official GB game is similar to the American Super Mario Bros. 2 (an official ROM hack of Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic) with the only difference between them are one’s illegal and the other’s official.

Fun fact, the Chinese cheaped out on save state battery, zelda and Mario 3 was never out to buy on the market for pegasus

@Lady Decade: this is the diffrence Super mario bros.2 is an official Nintendo Rom hack of Doki Doki panic. However their is a story you may not be aware of. During the release of Super mario bros. 1 they also did Vs. Super mario bros. the arcade version of the game, and they also did the sequal to Vs. Super mario bros. called Vs. Super mario bros. 2 it was already finish but never release, and would be never release except as a diffrent game(Super mario bros. the lost levels) because of what happen next. They where working on making a diffrent Super mario bros. game for the console Family computer, with new mechanic vertical scrolling, and side scrolling at the same time, and tossing vegtable, at the time the technologie was not created yet for cartridge to have vertical scrolling and side scrolling at the same time, so they place does plan on hold. To prevent his plan from doing nothing Shigeru Miaymoto team up with yumi kojo, to make Yumi Kojo Doki Doki panic for the Family computer disk system, while it was in devlopment for Doki Doki panic, the disk system was the solution, however the contract to switch it over to doki doki panic was already sign, so they still needed a Super Mario bros. 2, and they did not have one, and their was no time to make a new one from scratch, so they took the already done Vs. Super mario bros.2 and change it to the console version of Super mario bros.2(known as Lost levels for outside of japan) for the Family computer disk system. Since that was now the official Super mario bros. 2 they send it outside of Japan to get it tested, I'm sure it was not properly tested that is why it got refuse, I'm really sure the tester assume it would work like the original Super mario bros. without any high bounce on enemie, and that is what influence is decision also the fear of failing the market since it was label for kid, and did not want a super difficult game for kid to play. So they where able to do the original plan of super mario bros. 2 for outside of Japan, however they have to change a few think so it does not have any refrence to the yomi kojo Doki Doki panic changeing the lamp to potion, and adding run, and slowing down the water fall speed, changeing the heart into a mushroom, and changeing the theme to a mario theme while in sub space to get the mushroom or coins, also change what the slot machine look like, and change the end level mask into a Bird face.

I played this game on my hacked iPod a few years ago. Yeah, the controls were really bad for this game (on the iPod, of course) but it was kind of neat to play it. I did hate when you had to make extremely precise jumps on enemies in tight spaces or just having to take hits to progress. This were what I mostly remember... and of course, Mario throwing mushrooms.

For Christmas a few years ago I got a bootleg NES classic-type thing. One of the games on it is called Mario 6. It plays like a competent sidescroller until some event (I forget what exactly) turns Mario into a character from Tiny Toon Adventures. That's when I figured "Mario 6" was a romhack of the Tiny Toons game for NES.

When i was on vacation in singapour with my parents. I bought a gameboy cartridge with 60 games on 1 cartridge. I was so excited to play super mario bros 4, but even I as a kid noticed this can't be official

i used to have a multicart that that has this game, godzilla, puzzle bobble and castlevania legends named as dracula 3 😂 but damn this is nostalgic!

Oh I have one of those Greek 200+ in 1 carts in the attic from the late 90s I'll need to go see what's on it.

I've played this bootleg and the original game back to back before and I can definitely confirm that the bootleg is much harder to play in than the in the original. What's also interesting is that the original game had 4 power-ups, while this one had 3. The first one is a chicken suit, which was changed to the mushroom power-up where the player can fire an egg (or in this case, a mushroom) in front of you before it lands on the ground, continuing to move forward until it leaves the screen or it hits an enemy. The second one is a squirrel suit, changed into the carrot, allowing the user to glide in the air by repeatedly pressing the A button with your attack being feathers that fire in front of you and below you. The third one is the invincibility power-up. In the bootleg, it turns you into Yoshi who can breathe fire, in the original, it turns Shin-chan into Action Kamen, his favorite in-universe superhero which lets him fire off his signature attack called the "Action Beam." The fourth one doesn't seem to exist in the bootleg, but in the original, it turns Shin-chan into a cockroach which allows him to crawl into small spaces and have the ability to stretch his feelers in front of him for a few seconds, which is an attack that lets him kill enemies instantly by walking into them. All of the game's soundtrack is pretty much carried over to this Mario 4 bootleg and so are the enemies and bosses for each stage (albeit the sprites for the bosses and enemies were changed), but what's missing are the beginning, in-between levels and ending cutscenes, the end credits and a minigame section that comes up after finishing a level from the game. You have the choice of playing any of the three if you collected enough "Good Boy Stickers" (the smiling faces) from the previous level. Each minigame costs one sticker and winning any of the three grants you an extra life.

I actually own a solo cart of this. It’s on a strangely opaque banana yellow gbc cartridge.
