I can imagine Burt wasn't too happy not only in getting paid less but also that they were trying to squeeze him out and having Batgirl as Batman's sidekick.
@@jdsundstrom The worst thing the producers of Batman did to Burt Ward was making him take drugs to shrink his "package." I'd rather get paid less than have to take drugs like that. Just say No, indeed.
@@sureshmukhi2316 The Catholic League of Decency of some organization like that thought Burt's costume was a little tight in some areas. It was covered in that tv film, Back to the Batcave.
This one takes me back! Not long after Batman was cancelled, pops took me to an auto dealership to meet Robin! It was really Burt Ward, too. There's no mistaking that voice. He told us to stay in school and take our vitamins. I didn't see any Batgirl costumes, and pops didn't buy a car- on that trip!
Adam West and Yvonne Craig were experienced actors while Burt Ward was the relative rookie, which may have explained the salary disparity. However, I can see Burt's point because he did prove for 2 seasons that he could play the part!
Back in the 80's, I heard Ms. Craig tell that story. She also mentioned that while shooting that commercial he was very protective of the suit and with the exception of when she was changing in and out of it, he never took his eyes off of it She also jokingly wondered if his wife had ever worn it.
Weeelll... good story Dave. By the way, Julie Newmar may have been a lot of male favorite crushs on that show but Batgirl was MY big time crush. I really didn't get into the 60's Batman series as a kid until she showed up. Best costume fit in the whole series, and I admit Catwoman was second. Disney and beach party actress Annette Funicello was my all time favorite crush as a kid and a toss up between Dawn Wells and Yvonne Craig were my second big crushs. Great video Dave. 👌👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
If I myself were a mad SCIENTIST, I'D DEFINITELY have CLONED Yvonne Craig first & foremost before ANY OTHER WOMAN THEMSELVES AS WELL okay @wiseguymaybe.
I never got to meet any of the '66 Bat-Man cast, but sometime before Back To The Batcave came out, I heard a story that Burt had got a costume, but it didn't go into details how, but he gave it to his wife, and the two of them used to do personal appearances until they started saving rescue animals.
Im 57 years old, and ive been a lifelong fan of the 1960s Batman tv show. This year (2024) I'll be attending Adam West Day in Walla Walla with my daughter (also a fan of the show) . Hope to see you there.
If I were Burt and had the costume, I'd offer to sell it back to Yvonne for the amount he was underpaid compared to her salary. Fair is fair . . . Right Yvonne?
I really don't know how Burt got the costume but I think he probably does feel having it makes up for getting paid less than Yvonne. The "friend" thing is probably exactly like the friend of Aunt Bee's who Foley said he'd store the meat for when they both really knew it was her. But really it's a coveted suit for a lady Batman character second only to Julie Newmar's Catwoman suit. Lee Meriwhether was similar size and probably could have worn the same suit but Eartha Kitt's had to be a different one! But noone wore it like Julie!
It would be interesting to know who took the missing Batgirl costume worn by Yvonne Craig but I bet it was either an actor on the show or someone that worked behind the scenes on the show and most likely a guy.
Just discovered this recently why it has never been included on a special edition Blu Ray is beyond me some of the scenes would have been excellent in the film a great compilation
I think it's as you said. When people feel they are not being remunerated fairly, they "borrow" stuff from work; sometimes paper clips, sometimes Batgirl costumes.I really don't blame him....and he did a service preserving it for TV history. When I was a kid, sometime in the early 70s, I think, I remember seeing a Lawrence Welk Halloween episode. It was an abc show. Someone in that cast was wearing the Batman costume and someone was wearing Batgirl. So I saw the Batgirl costume sometime between Batman going off the air and that PSA. Take under advisement. I've been told I have a good memory but in my mind's eye as a child I thought the costumes were from Batman.
For YEARS I thought that she's done the Ep. of 'The Monkees: Too Many Girls'! (The one where Mike actually sings his Song 'Different Drum' in a talent show!) But that was Kelly Jean Peters!
In September 1966 you could have watched on TV Batman, Bewitched, Dark Shadows, Gilligan's Island, I Dream of Jeannie, Lost in Space, Tarzan, The Green Hornet, The Monkees, The Time Tunnel, The Wild, Wild West and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
@@sureshmukhi2316 Exactly, you can't mention any of the shows that were on TV in September 1966 without mentioning Star Trek! It literally premiered September 8, 1966, on NBC.
📺Also Dave, are you aware of the backdoor pilot for Batgirl which never aired on ABC. Her costume was a little different from the final version in her appearance. Her Bat mask was pointy and she said it hurt her cheeks. And her custume was a more velvet color. Batman seemed to be smitten by her and wanted to know her true identity. For whatever reason her appearance in season 3 was refilmed and her costume was slighty changed to the more purple color we are more used to. 🦇🌆🏍💥
I was only 9 when this came on air and even at that age, both Yvonne Craig and Julie Newmar had my attention. @3:00 is that a 'tag' hanging out of Robin's shorts?
I still remember the craziness at my elementary school the day after "Batman" premiered on TV - it was insane but fun! Excellent video, brought back lots of memories. Now a favor if I may ask: what's the music you played during this video?
I remember hearing a rumor that Adam West obtained a copy of the Batgirl costume and used it on a double when he made public appearance as Batman. But that's just a rumor!
Well...the commercial was made a few years after the 3rd and final season of "Batman". So, it would have been impossible for Yvonne to have done that. And...it's unlikely that, at the time, she was aware of what Burt was making per episode.
@@jdsundstrom I get that. It's just that most times when people demand equal treatment, they are only referring to themselves or others like them (same sex) and figure others can fight for themselves.
Very true. From what I understand, NBC wanted to bring "Batman" over to their network for a 4th season but decided not to when they discovered that the Batcave set had already been destroyed.
Robin was technically dating Pussycat (Lesley Gore) on the show! Haha! In a mid 90s tribute program when the FX Channel was just starting up Yvonne Craig was one of the Batman guests. She told them that after the fact fans told her that Batgirl had her own theme song and everything and she had no idea!
I have seen the ad multiple times but it sounds like the suit was in Burt’s personal possession and not from a friend but that’s just my takeaway from the story but wasn’t comfortable admitting that at the time but me I would love a piece of the the batcave set cause it has always been my favorite batcave design it’s even my thinking place in my mind when I’m thinking through something
I don't know what BatGirl's costume would sell for ? But I'd give ten thousand Quatloos for the Orion slave girl costume 🖖 Live long and prosper Dave !
Burt probably had a Batman costume too. And I'm sure he got them the same way Christopher Walken got all his old wardrobe. He stole it! It got so whenever Walken was finishing a job they would hide all his wardrobe before they told him it was a wrap. But sometimes, for an iconic role, he would have it included in his contract.
Wow! I've seen that PSA a million times from when I was a boy (i even thought it was hot back then that Batgirl had the Caped Crusaders in a helpless situation......and she was so casual about rescuing them), and I never noticed it wasn't Adam West. Even seeing it here, I can't believe it. It sounded just like him. I'll have to look at it again and watch for it! About Batgirl getting more money than Robin.... I'm not surprised. This whole notion of a pay gap is a scam. Men "make more" because they work longer hours and at harder, RISKIER jobs. Show me a job where men make more ACTUALLY doing the same full-time job for the same amount of years, and I'll show you the pot of gold I found at fhe end of the rainbow!
@@sureshmukhi2316 Well, back then the thinking always was that a MAN had a family, so he needed more. It was expected that women worked because they were SINGLE and that they lived at home with their parents, and that was mostly true BACK THEN! However, times and realities change. I think that law had something to do with correcting that, and it has been corrected. Women simply say that now to manipulate stupid people who are all so willing to believe stupid things because their minds are mush!
I think he knew this was also a very important memorabilia or souvenir piece from the show, he couldn't obtain the batmans' so Batgirls' costume he acquired from his...wink wink friend.
I'm a simple man. Someone says Yvonne Craig, I click. Even if Burt had a point, it's still wrong to keep holding onto it. We need that suit for posterity -- and for great memories. Thanks, Dave.
I was never aware anyone that helped Batman was ever paid lol. I thought they did it because they believed in what he was doing. As to the show, well...acting isn't a black and white, this is the same job kinda deal. It's kinda subjective as to whether one actor was paid more than another. Certainly sexism was a factor, but it's more complicated than that. I'd think it would make sense that Burt Ward, who was on every episode, was paid more than an actor that wasn't in every episode. You could make a case that Batgirl was more popular than Robin, then I'd agree. See, it's complicated. It's just not the same as "female entry fry cook" should have the same pay as that "male entry fry cook." I might think she deserve equal pay as Burt Ward, cause the character might have been seen as more popular, but as much as Adam West? No. You get pay for perceived value. And no one was going to get the same as the star.
The network definitely gave Burt the Batgirl costume to make up for under paying him during season 3. He likely requested that it not be washed after Yvonne wore it the last time. It probably still smells like her. Getting a costume worn by such a hot woman was no small score. I definitely would have accepted it as payment for lost wages if I had been in Burt's situation. The only thing better would be owning Lynda Carter's screen used Wonder Woman costume.
So Yvonne Craig got paid more than Burt Ward did 🤔 n I know Burt wasn't a happy camper about that being that he worked with Adam West longer than Yvonne Craig did but you know that's the way the happy ball bounces sometimes 😉 😂.
Yep. That PSA is pure feminism. Yvonne Craig was being paid 3 times as much as Burt Ward even though Ward was in his 3rd season on the show and Craig was in her first season. Throughout the show’s run Ward was the lowest paid regular.
What’s your point? An average women were earning $0.58 for every $1.00 men earned back in 1972. Feminism was the point of that PSA. Equal pay for equal work by women. Feminism isn’t the boogie man, it’s misogyny that’s the problem.
1:47 The lack on pay inequality has never stopped feminists from complaining about "pay inequality" and campaigning to be paid more even if they're already being paid more than some of their male colleagues.

Of course, Rob is always want to get it on with the back girl matter fact in the comment books he’s he’s dating Bat girl and they’re quite active and really does make a difference if there’s six years between him or two years or three years between him because it’s not she won’t be the first woman in history to marry a guy younger than her a lot ofl famous women marry guys younger than them and six years is really nothing
I get it. I don't like those drug commercials either. That said, there probably isn't any sort of legal standing to make them or government PSAs illegal.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Patrick. I totally agree that Adam was paid appropriately. That said, during the 3rd season of Batman, Yvonne was paid $1500 per episode and Burt was paid just $450. Holy wage disparity, Batman!
@@jdsundstrom and that was because Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) was introduced to become the Bat version of Linda Lee Danvers/Kara Zor-El better known as Supergirl as Batgirl was initially intended as a response to her, but Bette (Betty) Kane as Batwoman's sidekick wasn't too bad, a little brash and sometimes let her crush on Robin go too far, but at least she didn't always get caught in traps (you can see in her stories that despite DC's editorial claims she's actually doing much better than Auntie Batwoman at that point, or so we thought until recently now that we know Auntie Batwoman was playing the DID role to beat Bruce at his own game...and then break up with him...and after Alfred wasted no time pointing out the irony to Robin about the cape flying the other way.😂) and then so they could do what they did later with the Lois and Clark wedding for real, they did a comic+episode drop at the same time and were essentially doing what we might call Vanna-fying Yvonne Craig today....well before Vanna or predecessor Dr. Susan Stafford were even doing gameshows. DC Editorial even went so far in the comics to routinely Vanna-fy Babs to the point that even to this day they act like she's the only one who can be Batgirl...even though her successors have done just as well....must have something to do with gingers being Bat-Kryptonite.
1:44// the real challenge is trying to convince the slaves to demand higher gross wages to begin with. Unions did most of the Norm Macdonald dirty work in securing higher gross wages for some of the lowest under-educated humans ever born. myop Every dollar in gross wages raises the GDP, whereas NO profit goes into the GDP. the GDP is the economy, as reported by all media (even fox). so each worker should be paid the same for each job, barring promotion for time and skill, so as to grow the economy. No tax cut has ever grown the GDP due to the taxes do not change the gross wages. tax cuts for persons only change the net pay, or the net dividend/capital gain. No one uses the Truth about 'how tax cuts do not help the economy'. Even the december 2017 GOP passed tax cut for corporations Never led to higher gross wages, as none of the after taxed profits can ever be used to account for tax deductible expenses. any company that did use after taxed profits to account for new or higher gross wages would be paying taxes twice (the company paying the taxes). // any one that took grade 10 business class, or college, would know this content to be true. // thanks for another tear drop from a By Gone era.
