The Mystery of a Mercedes 'Heckflosse ohne Flosse'

It has been cut and welded in the rear quarter panel. It shows in the video right above the spare tire. You can see the weld and the weather stripping lines for the trunk.

Here in Brazil we have one in beige, year 1961, with the same back. And no one has been able to decipher the riddle either.

License plate is from San Sebastián/Guipúzcoa (SS) province. Looking at the Spanish Traffic Authority (DGT) statistics, only 6 Mercedes-Benz vehicles were licensed in that province in 1965, so maybe a direct query to the DGT could shed more light into the issue. Although I have not found detailed information, according to the number on the plate I would say the car was imported to Spain in April 1965 (last plate from March 1965 in SS was SS-53178, and last in April was SS-53766). Maybe it was involved in an accident and the Wagon maker redesigned it on demand of the owner due to the design of the successor. Who knows! Nevertheless, I like the original more.

Eigenlijk bestaat er geen lelijke Mercedes op de MB R klasse na lol maar de echte gevleugelde Heckflosse is voor mij de absolute topper !! 🍺

Debe ser el diseño de un prototipo del 250 SE para 1965. Las luces traseras también son diferentes al 230. Similares, pero diferentes. Seguramente debió haber sido destruido y acabó en España, por el contratista a quien le pagaron para destruirlo Habría que ver las ferias de autos del 63-64 y 65.
