This video was so satisfying. After watching several documentaries that boil down to “there are these tiles, they’re super weird man. Like, super weird. No one knows anything about them. They reference 2001 a Space Oddessy, a movie my dad likes a lot. Ok, that’s our show, thanks for watching”, I finally have some satisfying answers. I really appreciate that.
yea i was thinking, if they talked to him when he was randomly on the bus, that wouldve freaked him out considering he was already thinking people were after him lol

So the playwright David Mamet was completely full of shit. There’s no way he “forgot” where he heard these random ideas but somehow set his play under the guise of a caller into a radio show.
It's entirely possible, with all his difforent writing and all the time, that he did forget. If not, maybe he too was keen to make sure this paranoid person didn't suffer and further trauma from his play.
who knows, maybe he was drugged off to the eyeballs when he happened to listen to the radio. baader meinhof phenomenon is a thing and often messes with people's heads.
My suspicion is that he had a conversation with this guy or possibly even had his message broadcast through his TV one night, then he could have written that part of the play without consciously remembering it, or he could have just hidden the truth to avoid copyright issues or something like that. He said there was no radio phone call... but that doesn't mean he came up with the idea from thin air. It's far too specific to be unrelated, I agree with that.
Agree - Mamet is smart enough to know if he admits where he heard the idea, then someone could come after him for plagiarism or idea theft and lose a lot of money. He has zero reason to admit anything.

its actually a pretty good story too. But maybe the riverboat made from a recycled meteorite strike, and the food teleporting into the grails was a bit too specific
I think Farmer was Kurt Vonnegut's model for the reoccurring character of an elusive sci-fi author Kilgore Trout. Vonnegut would have loved this story.
Bravo, that was a fantastic documentary on one of the most fascinating topics! I once spotted a Toynbee tile in NYC, and I logged it’s location on the Toynbee tile website as it was not yet recorded. I was so excited!
This went from a mystery to a character study. All I'm left to think about now, is what a conversation with Sevy would be like. He seems like a fascinating, eccentric guy with so much going on in his head yet nobody to share it with.
Justin should have asked if he was Sevy & told him how interested he was in learning more. He could have just backed off & apologized if Sevy said "No" but as I am an introvert who has a hard time opening up to strangers, I would respond to such an inquiry. But then again, I have trouble with eye contact and try to avoid telephone conversations as much as possible.
It seems like he was neurodivergent. This was an obsession that he'd had for decades and went as far as to broadcast signal interruptions on people's televisions from his car. All the while still trying to hide from confrontation and using an alias right from the start. I speculate that these became compulsive habits that spiralled and evolved over the years. I wish that we could at least have a friend or family member talk about him publicly, even if it's only just small additions about what he's like. He seems like someone with a lot going on in his head and nobody to share it with
@@franzsperginand113 It is. I would just expect it to manifest differently. I saw a documentary on homelessness and mental health and a schizophrenic man wouldn't let the social workers replace his broken glasses out of fear they would hide a transmitter in the frame. He would rather have blurry vision. They tend to think everyone is out to get them.
i'm only a few minutes in and i already know this video is going to be amazing. you're one of the most udnerrated youtubers on this site! keep up the great work.
The idea of bringing back every person who ever lived/died on an alien planet was also the subject of Philip Jose Farmer’s “Riverworld” series of novels. (In the introduction, Farmer wrote that “You are in this book. So is every person who ever lived.” (Or something very, very close.) Don’t know if there’s a connection between Farmer and Toynbee, though. Very cool video! Came here from Fascinating Horror.
Very interesting theory and being that these books were released from (1971-1983) it fits the time period of the tiler both being inspired and when he began to actually lay tiles as he apparently began putting these down in the early/mid 80's. I'll have to look into this book series
This was so well put together and super interesting! I only knew the very basics of this mystery (that the tiles existed and what they were called) and I found this absolutely fascinating. Great job everyone!
I remember seeing these as a kid growing up in Boston. I honestly just thought it was graffiti and never thought much about it. I had no idea these existed all over. Super weird story. Could you imagine if he had access to social media or a podcast what he could’ve done?
I used to see the tiles all over Philly in the late 90's on and chalked them up to being some sort of artistic statement and nothing more, until I stumbled upon this documentary a few years back.
Those tiles were so ubiquitous in nyc that you didn’t even bother looking at them or reading them. I may have even thought they were official like “sewer” on a manhole cover.
This was really interesting. It makes me think about the was The Riddler is portrayed in the newest Batman. Sevy hasn't committed violence, but the creation of this puzzle with different clues and connections.
Years ago I received the book "Weird US' for Christmas and learned about the Toynbee Tiles and there were several photos. They are also in "Weird Pennsylvania".
I only discovered your channel tonight and I am super impressed with your content. The Toynbee Tiles is one of my favourite mysteries of all time and I have watched the original documentary several times. This was fantastic and incredibly informative. Thank you for helping keeping this absolutely fascinating story alive.

Just watched What's the Frequency Kenneth, followed by this one. Excellent work. It was very stimulating to see coverage about more obscure mysteries, rather than just another YT's version of the same old true crime stories. Well done...subbed.
First foray into your channel and im blown away. I heard about toynbee tiles circa 2010 so just brushed it off as a wild artpiece and never heard about this doc! I have a whole list of like 60 mysteries if anyone else wants to create some kind of investigative team 😅
I'm not sure how effective it would be, but my friends and I are always down to dabble in a bit of mystery! What you got? I'm interested to hear, I find these rabbit holes to be very interesting, and the more obscure the better!
Thanks for posting this. I'd read about the Toynbee Tiles somewhere and was intrigued. Then in the late '90s, I found a short magazine article about Justin's search that featured a photo of him lying on a city street with his head beside a tile. I clipped it out and put in one of my 'Crapbooks.' And now thanks to you, I know the whole story behind that random clipping.
Discovered your channel and binged the lot. The hundreds of comments expressing disbelief that such quality content is not getting the attention that it deserves are spot on.
This is the first video of yours I’ve watched after a recommendation from another channel I enjoy - I absolutely adore this style, I can clearly tell you put a lot of heart and work into what you do! A very good watch for when I’m just sitting around, I will tune in to your other works as well!
I’d heard of the tiles, years ago, as a weird conspiracy theory. This was a hell of a video - great to see this channel covering such a major modern mystery! …also, the ringing telephone sound made me jump, it was an interesting unexpected moment!
Absolutely fascinating! I must check the documentary out. Thank you, Disturban for the recommendation! Much love to all ✌️💙✨ I'm a new subscriber 😊 I look forward to watching more of your content 💗
I've watched Resurrect Dear three or four times over the years and am so glad that I've got an update on this. Thank you, you're a spectacular Spektator!
I grew up in the suburbs of philly and I remember coming across one of these tiles on south street. I just thought it was some kind of street art or something related to the near by magic gardens which have that same kind of mosaic aesthetic. What a crazy story!
I grew up outside of Philly and saw a few tiles in the late 90's and on, but like you I chalked the tiles up to some sort of street art and being that I only saw a few and it wasn't a daily event I forgot about them. A few years back I was having a conversation regarding all the strange things I've seen in the city, remembered the tiles, did a quick google search and found the documentary "Resurrect Dead" which I highly suggest to anyone interested in this phenomenon
I watched this coming from Fascinating horror who I watch religiously ever week. I have now subscribed to you too. I really enjoyed this and think you have made a great documentary and look forward to more
Enjoyed hearing the voice from Fascinating Horror in this one. I didn't know Disturban, but I see people also heard him too. Love a good collab. :) This is a really interesting story; I'm so glad there's actually a satisfying ending!
I'm a very new subscriber and I've watched about 3 or 4 of your videos so far, great interesting content, not just on this but the others I have recently watched.
Stories like these make me sad, thinking of what this man’s life must have been like, as he so clearly suffered from mental illness, specifically psychosis, which is usually full of so much anxiety and paranoia, I can’t imagine being left to suffer in that state for decades. The tile where he mentioned people with baseball bats “waiting for him” outside his house every night was almost certainly a hallucination, so who knows what other psychosis induced hallucinations he had related to his obsession over the years. He dedicated so much of his life to his belief in this one idea, the effort he went to to spread it is WAY more than even the most passionate people put in when “chasing their dream life/dream job” in their 20s, his tenacity is almost inspiring, but it must have been lonely to never have anyone take him seriously and to later be too afraid from his own paranoia once there were people finally interested in hearing his story. In a way I think it’s RU-vid videos like these that have changed how I view or treat certain types of conspiracy theorists - obviously not the dangerous political ones that incite violence, I mean the ones most of us would laugh at the absurdity of. A lot of those people are very mentally ill and are suffering from lack of treatment, or anyone in their lives who would even help them get treatment, their entire lives become entwined in their obscure beliefs. There’s no reason to hurt these people by ridiculing or insulting them. You can’t just snap a person out of psychosis like that, you can accidentally make it worse if you’re not experienced in dealing with psychosis sufferers. It’s really nice in a way that thanks to that documentary and videos like this that he succeeded in being heard, even if he may not have ever realised it. Honestly it’s amazing that anyone actually solved this mystery! They put the efforts of some professional detectives to shame with how far they went to get the answers. I also truly respect them for deciding to put the man’s well-being above harassing him for answers when he met him on the bus, I can only imagine how much he wanted to talk to him after all those years, but it definitely risked worsening his paranoia, so he did the right thing for sure.
I understand the issue, but again... Why the hell he didn't talked to man?! 😅 I mean, he could've just said "Hi, I loved your work" or something like that.
It wasn't a hallucination. Kids with baseball bats broke into his house because of a rumour he had money. He assumed it was because of his toynbee activities and believed the kids who hung out on the corner outside his house were the same ones who broke in or worked with them. Sevy is definitely ill but everything in that tile is a warped interpretation of something real.
@@k4rec4 he did. He didn't want it in the documentary but during the talks the other two give they say Justin apparently had a conversation with him that disturbed him greatly. How else do you think he was sure it was the tiler? Otherwise it's "Justin saw a man in his sixties get on a bus two stops away from sevys house, and randomly decided its probably the tiler"
Thank you for that Spektator, that was superb...such a well-crafted and well-researched documentary....nice voice-over cameo from "Fascinating Horror" in there too! I think Justin made the right call not to speak to Sevy (if it was him) and I also think this phenomenon will never really end, there will always be copy-cats as it becomes more widely known.
This is absolutely amazing! Extremely well done. Thank you very much! This might be the first Internet mystery that I have even a tangential connection to. I work for the organization that runs the meals on wheels program in my city. Wild
Its mind boggling to think about how much time and effort this man put into spreading this message. Driving across the world. Cutting out all those tiles? Pasting wheat bills all over the city. Installing a short wave radio system into his car so he could broadcast as he drove around, all while dropping tiles through his car floor?! Its easy to just say hes crazy. But all that effort makes me wonder if maybe its everyone else who isnt getting it. Maybe he was onto something! I admire his passion anyhow.
Weirder yet as someone who's read the entirety of the 2001 novel and its every sequel, there's a very similar idea presented within the novels that get much deeper than the movie did.
Point is I can honestly glean a little bit of what this man's plan might have been, but unfortunately any idea that I can extrapolate from this is hundreds of years from coming to fruition and would require so many resources it is infeasible to think although not impossible that we would ever exercise the time and effort to create a habitable section in the atmosphere of Jupiter than just make much more sense to build something like that on Earth.
@MGavin I understand what you're saying. I was under the impression that he thought a certain element that's present on Jupiter would aid in the resurrection of a human body when presented with the human genome. That's what I came to.
I mean his behavior is very much in line with someone who has schizophrenia or any other mental illness that causes psychosis, just because they’re persistent doesn’t mean their ideas are valid. Look at the “god entered my body in a body my same size” guy, he’s done a similar amount trying to spread his message, and he has schizophrenia.
Thanks for doing the right thing and mentioning the documentary. There are many 'Tubers' With less scruples and honor than you. People who would have taken the credit for a wonderful documentary. So I will be watching your release, subscribing and will do my best, to draw people to your channel. Thanks again. You have restored my faith, in 'The tube of youmanity' ;) Cheers from Montreal Quebec Canada
Omg thanks for this video!!! I have been fascinated with this story for years, but I could only find bits of info on it. You did an amazing job and answered so many of my questions. ❤
Great video! I saw another one on the subject a few years ago but I don't remember the conclusion. In 1987-8 I lived in Philly, worked and hung out on South St. but never ran into a tile that I know of, maybe they were't very obvious. Things like this are so much fun, it drives me nuts I could have stood on one absolutely oblivious. Thanks!
36:21 I'm Polish and I've never seen anyone use the word "żurnalista" for journalist (appears to be a direct copy from English/French with the Polish "-ta" suffix that describes someone's occupation). It's usually dziennikarz. Also some accent marks are missing. I don't know if it's deliberate or maybe a bad translation?
This is a fantastic documentary. I live in Philadelphia and have grown up with these tiles around me all my life. I love spotting them and making mental notes of where they are. Sadly, most of them are gone now as this is a big, bustling city and roads get paved over all the time. I fear someday soon they will all be gone. I’ve actually seen less and less of them over the years and haven’t seen a new one for a very very long time. I did however, just find an “old” one in my new neighborhood in Jenkintown/Abington right off of Old York road. I wonder if that one has been documented yet? Anyway, keep up the great work and thank you for bringing this amazing story to more people’s attention.
Awesome I'm going to try to go see it later as im close . I go to AC often and there's one in front of the AC bus station. I think I have pics in my phone
I really enjoyed your video about The Toynbee Tiler, came across it accidently on RU-vid a few months ago in one of those videos about strange stuff, to which I am sure you know there are a lot of them. Most of them, I'd say, the majority may be just ****, but, these days, you never can really tell, can you, now, going to watch the doc on this subject(if I can find it on RU-vid. Thanks again for a well researched topic!
I've read many comments here and have been waiting for someone to mention Toynbee's vision of antique soldiers while he sat on a hillside in Europe. I've come across other Fortean encounters of people from the past in other testimony. I was also waiting for some reference to the moon and pre-selenic times, as it's been said that it's a satellite that was built on, or around, Jupiter (Japetus, maybe?). I've often heard that the moon surveils us and ultimately harvests our souls, a hypothesis that gets interesting when mixed with the tiles, which I saw regularly in Manhattan when I lived there. Cool video.
The Eagles The Long Run vinyl album from 1979, I bought the record new just days after its release. On those early vinyl record pressings on the inner dead wax space where normally there is the hand written or stamped factory initials, catalogue numbers and next to it is the engraved odd mystery phrase NEVER LET YOUR MONSTER LAY DOWN" on side 1 and "FROM THE POLACK WHO SAILED NORTH on side 2. I noticed it, way back then on the first play, kinda blew me away at the time. My obvious guess was the dead wax mystery engraver was Don Henley.
Perhaps another detail is that the name "Severino" is from Italian, Latin, Spanish and Portuguese origins, so perhaps he is either Hispanic or Italian (or perhaps from a Hispanic/Italian family). That might explain why he might lay tiles in the mostly Spanish & Portuguese-speaking South American Countries, he may have visited those countries (maybe family connections there?).
My two biggest takeaways. How in the world did this guy/topic not end up on Art Bell?? Seriously. The second surprised me. As I sit here, watching on my laptop, my phone in hand until I decided to type, and 2 tablets nearby, I realized how I forgot how far we have come with technology. Watching the early internet days brought back memories of my 1st search, how advanced we thought it was and not all that long later, my phone can do 10000x what my 1st computer did. Kinda glad it didn't exist when I was a kid, but no clue how I'd live without it all now LOL. And how much easier it has made connecting with other people we never would have known existed. Anyway fascinating Doc & wonder to watch one like this with answers!!
