The N64 Sci-Fi Flop Rockstar Games Made Before GTA 3

On September 30th 1998, Rockstar North, then known as DMA Design, released Body Harvest.
The Nintendo 64 exclusive was the studio's first foray into true 3D open world design, laying fundamental foundation for the studio's future work crafting the Grand Theft Auto series.
To celebrate Body Harvest's 20th anniversary, I spoke with several ex-DMA developers who worked on Body Harvest, to find out the real story behind this Grand Theft Granddaddy.
* (NOTE - Added 1/10/18 - Artist Paul Reeves did not leave DMA soon after arriving on the Body Harvest team, he worked on the title for about one and a half years.) *

I've played a lot of open world games but gta san andreas is still the best for me, not because of Nostalgia but because at the time it had so much content and new mechanics that it could have been called gta 4. Gta 5 singleplayer and 4 always felt like they were missing something when compared to San andreas. Maybe gta 5 online filled the void but I've never played it. 5 and 4 are still amazing games and as an aspiring game dev they look incredibly scary to make, especially 5.

Body Harvest is one of my top 10 favorite games ever made. As a kid I was hooked instantly. The feeling of being so isolated and outnumbered was one I never felt before in a video game. One of the things Nintendo asked DMA to implement was walking speed indoors, which is still present in GTA 5. They said they learned a lot from them. I loved this game as a kid. It was one of those weird games for the N64 that nobdy had heard of. Funnily, I refered to it as "Harvest Body" since I was a 7-8 year with little understanding of english and the font threw me of. And that subsequently made it very hard to make any progress in the game and it was mostly trial and error. But despite all that, I loved that game.

The graphics were a bit under par compared to what the N64 had to offer in it's best games, and the end of area boss battles were very hard. Yet I am going to say that this is one of my favourite all time games. You could jump in any vehicle (and there were lots dotted around) , you could go in some buildings, the puzzles/objectives were fun and had variety. The music was great, gave it a bit of a sinister feel. There were people milling around and story characters - you really got a feel for how ambitious it was. A real pity it's not better known - I wish they would remake it!

This, Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Doom. These games were hitting this new sensation for games in the 90's: freely exploring a 3D environment. I didn't know it yet as a kid, but I was eagerly awaiting thenofficial arrival of open world game design. Body Harvest and Ocarina of Time both especially got me hyped and thinking about the future of massive exploration games. The genre has had some missteps, but we can always go back to these classics to reset ourselves are escape the formulas of modern open world design. Body Harvest is an awesome game... Easily one of my favs, and part of a bunch of great games that made the N64 era so magical. You can't compare it to GTA3. And I'd rather play Body Harvest 1/2/3/4/5/6 than GTA. It's a much more exciting, adventurous, bigger concept, with probably the most badass boss fights in just about any game ever. Lovely music. Super fun vehicles. Exciting levels to explore.

Nintendo. A family friendly company that rarely allows violence in games on their plattform (even to this day, even tough they have relaxed on it a bit but still censor here and there), helped a company along that would develop some of the most controversial and sex/violence fueled games in our generations. I went to Gamestop in early 00's with a lil bit of money, and bought this as a blind buy because it was so cheap. I freakin loved it. Never beat it though. I forget why

This was a fantastic watch. I loved that game back in the day and replaying it a few years ago it definitely doesn’t hold up. But I always thought in later years how it reminded me of an early GTA and now I know why. Thanks!

The game might not be a cult classic or masterpiece, but it's pretty damn solid game and the soundtrack is just amazing. I surprised nothing was being said about it in the video. One of the best on N64, imo. I really would love to see a full fledged remake of this game.

thankyou for making it! If only there was a team willing to remake it... and spice up the incredibly boring building moments -or- make it so that you can't get stranded in some remote area and spend 30 minutes trying to climb a bloody unclimbable mountain or swim etc. Oh, and the fog! Rented this game when i was a kid and still think about it from time to time, though for a long time i couldn't remember the name. I don't remember anything about the time travel part. I just remember the odd collection of vehicles i guess, lol.

So I'm about to start developing a Body Harvest remake in Unreal Engine 4 and obviously, this is gonna be a fan-made free remake. I'll create a Patreon page later when i release the demo for anybody who wishes to support me but for now, I'm just brainstorming. If you got any cool design ideas, weapon designs and especially graphic designs for Adam and the aliens that I can implement into 3D, hit me up at raza28feb@gmail.com with the subject "Body Harvest" Cheers.
