The National Treasure Who Cut Lee Kuan Yew’s Hair 

Hello, this is the director/ producer and I would like to share some of my thoughts while producing this video. To be honest, I don’t hold any strong emotional connection towards barber because I really hated having my hair cut since young. What drew me to Selvam, however, were his words of wisdom and confidence. For someone who had his dreams of becoming an aircraft engineer crushed, I wondered what it’s like emotionally and mentally, to be, in a way, forced to take over his father’s business. His perseverance and strong sense of pride towards his craft, even if that is not his initial dream, is what touches me the most. It’s the cliche saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Most of our parents and grandparents’ generations had to give up their dreams for their family but they always give their best in what they do. That’s what make them great craftsmen ❤️ Life is all about choices. Selvam showed me that not everyone has the privilege to pursue their dreams, but we can always choose to make the best out of our situation. I hope this video can become a source of motivation for whoever who faces similar struggles out there. - Pei Fang

He received the call in 2015 and Mr LKY passed on on 23rd March 2015. Hes probably one of the last men that trimmed his hair. Respect 💪🏼

Oh wow, used to cut my hair there when I was studying nearby at ngee Ann polytechnic. He goes above and beyond what normal barbers do with a good massage and cologne. Such a nice guy he even gave us discounts as he knew we were students, i just wish he wasn't so far as I live in the east and have graduated 😢😢

A practitioner must have an authentic pride in his skills honed over many years, regardless of wealth and social status. I am encouraged by your story, Mr Selvam.

Have passed by his establishment for like 15-20 years, didn't realise such a dedicated man plied his trade there.

Best service at Mr Selvams shop in ALL of Singapore. No Toni & Guy can match up. I have tried both and more but nothing like Selvam. There is a reason why he was LKYs barber!!

I would rather wait for a 30 minute good haircut than to have my hair ruined by a 10 minute sloppy work.

30 minutes seems reasonable for a full barber service, at least to me. I don't want a ruined hairdo.

Reminiscent 🤔of my childhood day, getting a haircut from an Indian barber 💈 the massage, cologne, and but mostly the barber chair with another extra box cushion to sit on...😅🥰 thank you uncles barber u are our unsung heroes!

10 min is too quick, meant to be cutting hairs, not cutting grass. i got into so many argument with those barber that think speed is everything. actually, no, going to barber is always like visiting your friend and a social place, no need to rush or be quick. customer hair is not grass. heck, even u need patience to trim the grass, what more customer hair?

Hair salon/barbers are doing a service. Service does not equals to fast service. Service comes from the heart..

I'm lucky enough to only need a couple of visits (2 so far) to the barber's in my entire life. My mom is the one who does it for me. She used to work at a salon in Beauty World also. I could request any style I wanted, but I always find myself preferring the same old hairstyle 😂
