The NBC Wednesday Mystery Movie Opening

"IRONSIDE" meets "COLUMBO". It could have happened because apparently they both existed in the same Universal universe. One has to wonder if crossovers would have helped to extend the life of the NBC Mystery Movie. As it was, that universe existed continuously for seventeen years on NBC.

Of all the NBC Sunday and Wednesday Night Mystery Movies, "Columbo", McCloud", and "Quincy, M.E." were the gems of the group. "Banacek" was very underrated. "Quincy" was the only one to make it as a weekly series. You would have thought "Columbo" and "McCloud" would have already done it.

Actually, Peter Falk didn't want to be tied down to a weekly series. So, the Mystery Movie rotating feature approach allowed him to film a handful of episodes of season, within a short period of time.

As a kid i grew up in Louisiana watching this movie mystery show. I can honestly say that Henry Mancini is boss ! The detective guy in the background shining a flashlight into the camera is exhilarating as no orher tv show had that start! Iroside was cool, Kojak, Mccloud, Culombo, and others like Starsky and Hutch by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg. Swat with Steve Forrest.

For some reason, I remember Tenafly and The Snoop Sisters being on Tuesday. The Wednesday NBC Mystery Movie, if I recall correctly, had a theme by Quincy Jones and featured Madigan, Cool Million, and Banacek after the original three series moved to Sunday.
@russellmaddox2437
@russellmaddox2437 Год назад
The first season of the Wednesday Mystery Movie (72-73) had Banacek, Cool Million and Madigan. The second (73-74) had Banaceck, Snoop Sisters, Tenafly and Faraday and Company. It was on Wednesday the first half season but moved to Tuesday mid-season. It didn't help the ratings and the midweek edition was cancelled, leaving just the Sundy edition.

I remember watching Banacek and Snoop Sisters on Hallmark Channel many years ago. They also showed reruns of Columbo, McCloud, McMillan & Wife. McMillan & Wife was a 1970's version of The The Thin Man, and McCloud was based on a 1968 film Coogan's Bluff.

@@chuckcollins Although George Peppard would gain later fame as Hannibal Smith on the A-Team there was something special about him doing the Banacek character. It was one of those times when the right actor was doing perfect part ... George fit Banacek like a glove. Bold Venture Press Its too expensive a concept to do now and viewers aren’t as willing to to stick with a show if what/who they want to see isn’t there week after week. I remember ABC tried that in the 80-90’s with Burt Reynolds/Peter Falk/Lou Gossett and the Columbo movies were the only ones that got consistently high ratings so they dumped the others and made Columbo films only

This is not the original Wednesday Mystery Movie opening. When the Wednesday Mystery Movie started it used an opening which was completely different from the Sunday Mystery Movie opening. When that proved to be unpopular they switched to the same opening that was used on Sundays. I wish someone would post the original Wednesday Mystery Movie titles. Here is a quote from Wikipedia: "The Wednesday Mystery Movie theme was composed by Quincy Jones for its first season and had an animated open to show the lineup. The tune was very uptempo and the open did not look at all like that of the Sunday Mystery Movie."

Banacek was the crown jewel of this day's rotation series before the hack writers came in. The success of "Barnaby Jones" on CBS forced the hand of NBC to dredge up "The Snoop Sisters" and "Faraday and Company". and Tenafly was a lame PC-catch-up spin to "Cutter" which was a TV pilot rip of "Shaft." The pity is they could've thought out far better concepts to answer the senior and black consciousness wave at the time. They could've knocked Quinn Martin's door as how to do it.
