"The way the tension is built is almost unbearable, and the way it pays off is on another level. It feels like a nightmare that slowly transforms into a state of pure euphoria, as her guard slowly lowers. I was in a complete trance by the end of it - you can just feel the power emanating from Elle by the end." - a comment from zach machias that i copy pasted from the same scene uploaded in youtube because he said it right
Even though he doesn't assault her, he does use her essentially as a prop, painting her in the same way you would paint a canvas. It's very objectifying. She's not seduced by him touching her, she's seduced by the idea of being a model- a canvas. Essentially she's willing to allow it at this point to get the admiration she wants. Also the fact that both she and we as the audience assume he will assault her, and feel relieved when he "only" paints her, is evidence of just how prevalent assault is in these industries.
Loved this film. Found this scene particularly disturbing as I remember the series “Taken” from 20+ years ago and remember when he played her grandfather.
Extra disturbing is she was only 17 when this was filmed (Which is "ytoo classic/mature" for m o st modelling/beauty industries' standards or interests
The scene is unrealistically beautiful and absolutely nonsense. Fashion photographers 99% of of their time shoot models in clothes, it's MAIN part and purpose of their work, nudity only for personal projects. If the photographer is not complete moron, nudity is discussed at the stage of selecting a model, as can be seen in "Helmut Newton: Frames from the Edge", a real film about a real photography.
Refn is not very much interested in realism, stereotypical beauty (the film is ultimately a critique of what commercialism does to it) or reason. He admittingly operates on an emotional level of storytelling and this scene is meant to be more metaphorical and symbolic I think. Painting her in gold is a sign of deification; an occult metaphor for the culmination of her initiation process and the preparation for eventual sacrifice.
@@gnosticcinema9596 food for the gods... 🙃. The gods won't accept anything less... 🙃... The photographer is on a power trip... 🙃.. Making the statement "I am in control,...yet I ain't gay".... 🙃

Warum nimmt er keinen Pinsel? Und warum guggt die immer so komisch? Die hat doch vorher gewusst worauf sie sich einlässt. Und überhaupt ist das totaler Müll.
